Ask This Old House plumbing and heating expert Richard Trethewey takes host Kevin O’Connor inside a dishwasher to explain each cycle.
SUBSCRIBE to This Old House: bit.ly/Subscrib...
Steps:
1. A dishwasher begins the cycle by running a discharge pump to empty any remaining liquid in the machine.
2. Next, hot water enters from the side and fills a reservoir at the bottom until it activates a float. In some cycles, an electrical element can heat the water to sanitize dishes.
3. Once the reservoir is filled, a pump sprays water and soap all over the dishes.
4. At the end of the cycle, the pump will discharge water out of the drain.
5. The number of cycles is determined by user settings.

Also, even if you use a pod for the main wash. Use a little liquid for the prewash. That little bit of extra cleaning time can go a long way, especially for a load of pots and pans. It is also worth checking the owners manual. Many dishwashers do not heat the prewash water, because it is a shorter part of the cycle. In that case, run your kitchen faucet until you get hot water, right before starting the dishwasher. Hot water simply cleans better.

Tip: If you have a manual knob dishwasher like this one, make the selection on the rotating knob before closing the door completely. Otherwise, the internal contacts of the knob will electrically arc as you spin it, prematurely wearing them out. Learn from my mistake, and save yourself a couple hundred bucks on that repair.

Kitchenaid actually makes a dishwasher with a window in it in case you are bored enough to want to sit in front of it and watch it wash the dishes LOL. Its not a cheap dishwasher though they're $1k+ for those.

One thing not mentioned anywhere in video or comments is that many dishwashers have a turbidity sensor. This senses how dirty the drain water is and based on that runs more cycles. I found this out when replacing my bottom rubber tub on my GE washer

My caloric built in 2000 is similar but has a smaller arm above top rack, schematic shows it has water pumped to it, been cleaning out lime or scale today of both arms, manually and running vinegar through it after, was all clogged up, still don't think it's spinning yet or it's for a certain setting, the bottom arm is ok IDK, just bought the place. The bottom arm has small metal heat shields where it stops above the heat element, make sure they stay on!!! Pretty sure I'll have it working ok.

Your are wrong!!! Float doesn't trigger the water intake solenoid until water level is reached. GE dishwashers let flow water during 44 seconds before starting the washing cycle. Float is a security that triggers the solenoid ONLY if water level becomes too high. I'm having problems right now because pressure is to low and 44 seconds of water is not enough to clean the dishes well...

@IAmNotAFunguy
@IAmNotAFunguy 3 года назад
There is just a small valve at the bottom of the rinse aid well and when the timer calls for it the valve opens and drains a bit into the basin for use.

Do you believe it is necessary to affix a shield (say aluminum skin) to the underside of a wooden countertop to protect it from steam coming from door when opened after cleaning?
@MoeBabaloosh
@MoeBabaloosh 5 лет назад
A couple coats of urethane on the underside of the countertop that's exposed to the steam would do the trick. We installed quartz countertops and used acrylic sealant on the unfinished/unpolished underside just above our dishwasher before installing it. Cheers, and good luck.

That final power drying cycle is wasteful, hence I always choose "no heat dry". Given a couple of hours, the dishes will dry anyway due to residual heat from the wash.

I have never seen a dishwasher with "hot water in" as stated at 0:32 Every single one i've ever installed have been COLD water in ONLY. The dishwasher has a water heater itself to heat the water for its wash cycles.
@loveitorleaveit9673
@loveitorleaveit9673 6 лет назад
Game Changer WHAT? Exactly what century was your dishwasher made in? A modern appliance should ONLY have to heat water for a possible sanitary cycle! Yes, hot water in only! You sure don't know how to install a dishwasher! Watch a few installation videos and be surprised!. What an energy waster you are, using a dishwasher to heat cold water, I'll bet your cycles run forever!
@randomsecrets

32deej There is, that dishwasher has one spray arm. Most regular sized dishwashers have 2-3 spray arms that really increase the amount of spraying going on, but that particular dishwasher is shitty.
@TheVentureaaron
@TheVentureaaron 7 лет назад
This is an example of the kind of trade off with moving to modern appliances. One spray arm but it's still running (what appears to be) 100 years later. But move to a modern one with more features/power and the electronics go south 13 months in leaving you very frustrated and learning how to repair/replace a control panel. This message brought to you by maytag.

Stop being lazy people. Do your dishes by hand. Its cleaner, less energy, and more satisfying. Plus it also saves time because you can do it quicker than the dishwasher can.
@smkeel
@smkeel 6 лет назад
Michael Lim not true. Dishwashers only use a few gallons per wash, whereas the water is constantly running when washing by hand. Also, it takes water of at least 140 degrees to kill all germs, and if you tried to wash your dishes by hand any hotter than 120, it would burn your skin off. In my opinion, it’s easier for me to put everything in the dishwasher after cooking a meal, turn it on at night, and have clean dishes in the morning.
@GrzegorzDurda
@GrzegorzDurda 5 лет назад
Michael Lim - Dishwasher is more effective. I always did them by hand and liked it. The key it to always have a fully loaded washer so you need more dishes. You fill it up over a few days and run one quick cycle. 4 gals of water is very low usage and id never be able to wash a setting for 8-10 people in that little water
@themikeroberts
@themikeroberts 5 лет назад
Dishwashers are actually way more efficient than hand washing. Here's one test but there's many others you can google: www.reviewed.com/dishwashers/features/please-stop-hand-washing-your-dishes
@GrzegorzDurda
@GrzegorzDurda 5 лет назад
Michael R - Hey agreed. However i stopped using the dishwasher in the last month and got a commercial sprayer faucet. The thing i dislike about the dishwasher is that it bathes your dishes in the same dirty water over n over and this requires a strong detergent and a strong rinsing detergent. The Detergents never rinse away fully and over time turn dishes opaque from the strong pitting action. You also drink water and eat food from those plates.
@stephensnell1379

Actually the dishwasher is in my opinion a real time saver as hand wash uses far more water and more energy. It also takes up personal time.
