Hi Paul, My vintage Linn LK140 / 85 amps go into standby mode when no signal is going through them. They also have overload protection circuitry...many amps probably do. My guess, they are Class A/B. Love 'em! Thanks for another great video!

This was an excellent, understandable presentation that should hopefully put an end to the misunderstandings about the classes of amplifiers and their particular pluses and minuses.

Bias just means "DC idle current". Class-A uses a constant bias regardless of input signal, Class AB&B varies the bias based on input signal strength.

Is the power of an amp rated peak to peak, peak to ground or RMS?

class a, b/ab,and d....a is simple amp but is power inefficient, class d is power fm modulator/demodulator...so we're left with the cookie class b/ab i dont know why has two names maybe a crazy american and agglosaxon mess up there, so this class is the coockie for me the most linear ;))

what's your feeling between smps and class D as the power supply is there much difference between the two? I would have thought the class d would be a lot cleaner.
@Paulmcgowanpsaudio
@Paulmcgowanpsaudio 2 года назад
I am very much in favor of SMPS and we use them in our amps. However, it must be said that most SMPS have very little energy storage and so for peaks they aren't much good. Thus, when we use them, they are always oversized by a large degree.
@hoobsgroove
@hoobsgroove 2 года назад
@@Paulmcgowanpsaudio why can't you use storage capacitors then for secondary side of the smps to sort out that problem of peak usage? and using a class D as the power supply wouldn't that sort out the problem of peak usage? merry Christmas...

@@hoobsgroove Well, you could but then you would have to redesign the SMPS. Easier just to use a bit of overkill since we buy these from an OEM.
@hoobsgroove
@hoobsgroove 2 года назад
@@octaverecordsanddsdstudios1285 there's not much redesigning going on it's just a bank of storage capacitors not sure what you mean by redesigning?

I'm still a little confused about power amplifiers and integrated amplifiers that are class A & class A/B. Like when they say the first 8 watts are class A then it goes into 400watts class A/B. But the same amplifier can be biased to put out 12watts class A then go into 250watts class A/B. It can be biased again for 18watts class A and 150watts class A/B. etc. Ive read that these amplifiers, ones that can be biased like that...and just first X amount of watts are class A before going into class A/B...that those first X amount of class A watts is NOT true class A. If that's true...what is it then? What's "kind of" class A mean? What's the point of a "first X amount of watts are class A" then?

@@Paulmcgowanpsaudio OMG! I am feeling really old! Never in my wildest dreams have I imagined there might be a person who didn't recognize a reel-to-reel tape recorder. I guess 60+ years fooling with audio recording makes me a dinosaur!

Paul, you should wear black T-shirt more often. Makes you look young and give off that Steve Jobs chic.

I always thought a 100 watt (mono) amp used 200 watts.
@spacemissing
@spacemissing 2 года назад
The figure varies. A 100 watt amplifier will draw twice its rated output if its efficiency is about 50%. Some class A/B circuits can (barely) reach 70% or so. Class D is the most efficient, often 80% or better.
