For some of us, disability has become something to fear.
But that is not the case in those with the rare but fascinating disorder known as Body Integrity Dysphoria, or in short, BID.
BID is a rare, neurological condition, which makes sufferers unable to recognize parts of their own body.
A research study found that BID is associated with structural brain anomalies in Primary Somatosensory Cortex that might result from a dysfunction in the integration of multisensory information, leading to the feeling of disunity between the mental and physical body shape.
People with BID feel like they are overcomplete in their physical form.
For them, it's almost as living with constant anxiety that a foreign being is growing on their body. As if a stranger is constantly touching them.
They manage to cope the illness by using canes and prosthetic attachments to help them feel their true self.
But some others will only be happy unless they lose a finger, arm, leg or toe, and eyesight or hearing.
Most people with BID choose to live secretly with their condition due to what other people would think about them.
