Fifty US states can typically be assumed on a map to represent the geographic area they display, however the state of Oklahoma isn't exactly what it appears to be. Much of the Sooner State is in fact composed of territories whose jurisdictions fall under the control of various Native American tribes. The history of Oklahoma is very much intertwined with the history of such native tribes and their tragic plight as victims of American expansionism. Spending a day to cast some positive spotlight upon the Chickasaw Nation, the current territory of one of the famed Five Tribes of Oklahoma, simply seems like the right call on the Coverage Project. Originally inhabiting the areas of modern-day northern Mississippi and western Tennessee, the Chickasaw people were fierce warriors who later adopted cultural practices from colonial influences in order to remain on good diplomatic terms. As a result of forced expulsion from their homeland, infamously known as the "Trail of Tears", the tribe suffered for decades against the threat of cultural erasure in a foreign environment, which we today call south-central Oklahoma. The Chickasaw people now continue the battle to retain their cultural identity in a newer, more promising age, as proud descendants of those who fought for sovereignty and recognition over the generations. The town of Sulphur is one great epicenter for appreciating the rich Chickasaw culture that shines under today's contemporary atmosphere.
