I think "knowledge is power" means that knowledge is synthesized in accordance with the interests of the dominant power structures. And also that the very act of a certain group of people producing knowledge about another group is an exercise of power. Like for example the knowledge produced by the colonizers about the colonized (e.g. orientalism). I am also just starting to learn about this :)

Yes; I'm re-reading a work by Foucault now and have just realized how stupid and shallow this video is. Well, the more you learn the deeper you will go, whilst the rest of the work lies in refuting your early mistakes ;)

So for example you wanna learn how to cook but you only gained knowledge of how to do martial arts. Now that knowledge is not power. Its just useless in the fields of cooking. I mean, why would it be a power if you cant do anything with it in the first place?. Sorry my guy I'm just writing my own conclusion of what I learned here

That was brilliant 00:00-2:00. The Hebrew explains knowledge as something that none of us were taught growing up. You hit on it. Unsterstanding this is what knowledge is. Not just facts. You hit it on the head. Knowledge in Hebrew does have a more in depth and broad meaning which I would argue and correct. Knowledge is "to notice" "pay attention" "awareness", "focus". Some definitions being "that which touches you". Some people do not have these abilities because they just go along with what they have been taught. Like staying in the stem fields and thinking this is the only way to gain knowledge. Knowledge would be like traveling to a new country and been introduced to many different avenues to pay attention. That are brought to your attention. Then you can come home and more things begin to pop up at you that you never "noticed" before.
@Bunndog

What do you mean by “The Hebrew explains” and “knowledge in Hebrew”? I’m Israeli and my mother tongue is English. I’m saying this because I always saw the English word ‘knowledge’ and the Hebrew word ‘ידע’ as one and the same, so I was wondering what did you mean by saying the depth of the word in Hebrew.
@lukeakerboom6298
@lukeakerboom6298 4 года назад
@@Bunndog thank you for commenting. I'm an American. In our culture, there is always a tendency to forget the meaning of a word. We water words down or fail to study the depth and magnitude of a word. Today, knowledge is typically thought of as something from a book, or something obtained from school or a discipline. You hit it on the head. You know the right version of the word.

I always thought of knowledge is power as something that you use. Like if you had a gun but had no knowledge of how to use it you are powerless to shoot somthing with it. Or if you had all the material to make a gun but no way of knowing how to construct it, making it yet again powerless. You have no power without knowledge. And I always thought of it like knowledge is infinite and to know everything is to know from the biggest to the smallest of details and what is behind those details and what is behind the details of the details and so on. It not just knowing the whole but what makes up the whole and why that is. And sense the universe is ever expanding, so is knowledge. To truly know it all means to know everything from when a blade of grass is turned to when a new planet/galaxy/whatever is being made and every single detail about it. And if the human brain is even capable of containing such knowledge is even possible sense we have this thing called memory and we tend to lose it. But I dont know, that's just me theorizing. Id like another perspective on it and see if anything I'm thinking is flawed.

Great video! You can also make another video where you add that discourses have power because of their relation that the speakers of the discourse have over the subjects of their discourse like therapist and doctors to patient, pedagogy to the taught, scientists vs their experiments, criminology to criminals. Great introduction.

I think knowledge so far has lead humanity's progress, learning about what is this, why does that do this, I saw a lightning hitting a tree and setting it on fire, what is fire, can I set the tree on fire too, the curiosity of a human is what gave him knowledge, leading all of us foreword, and that is my perspective on "knowledge is power"

Interesting interpretation. According to my understanding Foucault did not really see the individual as possessing power. Instead, power resides in or exists as a dynamic network of relations. There are various competing systems of power (nerds vs cool kids) and the system whise discourse is more dominant (that is, the system whose ideas are more generally accepted and repeated) has more power. As individuals we can become a part of this system if we conform but the power resides in the discourse *which can change) and not individuals who are merely just points of manifestation of this power. But hey, I too could be wrong. It's Foucault we're dealing with here.

When you mention knowledge, is it limited to knowing facts and theories only, or is it inclusive of the skills and ability that one can acquire whilst in pursue of knowledge? I think that’s where a good portion of the power part comes to play in our society
@RCWaldun
@RCWaldun 5 лет назад
The term "dominant discourse" is inclusive of skill and abilities. Also notice; conceptions that promotes "skills" and "abilities" tend to turn into abilities. If all the members of a group started acquiring a skill, then the individual will also come to "desire" and label the skill as "beneficial". Hence, concepts leads to skill leads to power.

Good video. Knowledge IS power. Knowledge doesnt mean knowing maths and quantum physics. What I mean is knowledge is that with information of certain things you can become better than the rest of the pack. For example you wanna be a cool kid in highschool. If you have the knowledge of how to become a cool kid ; KNOWLEDGE on how to make yourself attractive , KNOWLEDGE on how to socialise , KNOWLEDGE on how to flirt , KNOWLEDGE on how to make yourself appear more likeable , you will be more powerful. Information , knowledge and a brain is what made the human race, the most powerful species on the planet. We are not the fastest or strongest animal , and yet , we rule the world. We manage to fly the oceans and sail the seas. Because of knowledge.

Good job! Scientia Potestas Est! In the modern world Francis Bacon was the one who first introduced the motto 'knowledge is knowledge for the sake of power'. A magician (magic has been defined as knowledge for the sake of being able to do whatever you want, which, by the way, is straight Satanism), author of the first book on scientific methodology (Novum Organum) and author of The New Atlantis which is a utopian tale of a totalitarian state run by a technocratic priesthood.

@evagelosgeronicolas4019
@evagelosgeronicolas4019 4 года назад
@@luckyman9903 We are finite creatures (created beings of limited abilities). I did not bring myself into existence, I did not create the environment in which I live, or the language that I speak. I have done nothing to make my heart beat, I have not put together the neurons in order to be able to think, and so on. Our cognitive abilities are finite. What feels good is not necessarily good. What we think is good may very well turn out to be evil. Still, we do want to do things on our own. This is evident even in small children. They kick and scream insisting on doing even the most harmful things. This is a pretty good analogy for our relation to the Creator of the Universe. If, for instance, God says that sexual promiscuity is evil, He reveals that it is evil for us, and we better listen, though it may feel good at the moment. In reality, as people have known by the experience of thousands of years, it introduces disorder into the functions of the various powers of the soul. Briefly said, it subordinates rationality to passion. Any person controlled by a passion cannot put his life in order. But we are also free. We can do otherwise, we can sell our life and our soul to passions. We can do that, but this is a revolution. It is a direct attack against the order of the world, the order that God created. We have made a big or small step to Satanism. Satanism is first of all a revolt against God, against the order of the world, an clear expression of rejection of the world as created by God. It is the result of pride. The creature revolts against the Creator because he does not like the created world as. Atheism is something like a way out of it. You want to do what you want, but you do not want to think of yourself as a Satanist. Therefore, Atheism teaches that there is no God, there is no Satan, our existence is a mere matter of chance. But there is an infinite amount of wisdom in the world, and the probability of that the world is a matter of chance is next to zero. Relative to that value, the 'astronomical' magnitude of the universe (14 bi years, hundreds of billions of galaxies) is insignificant. Furthermore, if one reads the lives of the saints (there are living saints right now,) he obtains strong empirical evidence against atheism. Unfortunately, my personal experience is that no atheist with whom I have spoken, and who pretends to base his atheism on science, has ever bothered to check the evidence from the lives of the saints and from miracles. But I do know that there are such cases. There is an ovewhelmingly strong evidence which shows that beyond material nature there is also a spiritual world which interacts with nature. Why then is there so much talk about being able to do whatever you want? -Because if you revolt against God you are going to fall under the control of Satan and his priests, who work for the totalitarian domination of the whole world. This is the promise that S. gives to his followers. It is primarily a psychological war, a war for the programming of the conscious and the unconscious. The become both slaves of Satan and slaves of a totalitarian world order. Aleister Crowley is considered as the greatest Satanist of the 20th century. What does he say? "Do whatever you want, that's the law". OK, we' ve heard it then from the horse's mouth. E Michael Jones has written a book on sexual liberation as means for social and personal control. The name of his book is Libido Dominandi. You can find it in culturewars.com

Here's what I sum up: To know is not equal to have knowledge. Knowledge doesn't really lead one to power exactly now, does it? To have knowledge is to have the ability to comprehend the 'not so open' key to acquire knowledge. No knowledge equals no acceptance. No acceptance equals exclusion. And if we are excluded, it also excludes our chances of gaining power. I guess Knowledge is Power actually means Knowledge is the stepstone to acquire Power. And this Power is abstract but it will concrete as you dive deeper. (Just what I think, it may differ from your thoughts, no offence)

"The Nietzschean commerce in the trade of the vital lie" - Jaques Lacan Q: What is this Power/Knowledge thing? A: It's a myth, parable, or metaphor about life. A way to describe social habit, and compulsion to make it seem evil and sinister. As such, despite 47 years inhabiting the nooks, crannies, and grand halls of Western academia, as a gravy-train for "theory" PhDs, this Power/Knowledge has never been elaborated in detail. In the kind of detail, for example, we give to real thigs such as cluster B personality disorders. 47 years after its birth, Power/Knowledge remains as metaphoric, parabolic (hyperparabolic?) and ambiguous today as it did in 1975. Q: Why? A: How will "thinkers" and "theorists" be able to trade in myth if they have to show that their myths are real? Power/Knowledge is a special understanding that only elite "theorists" have. It has a similar intellectual currency that Marxism, Psychoanalysis once had, 50 years ago within the academy, or that, say, Aristolean Natural Law had 500 years ago.
