The city of Windsor has been trying for years to implement their city-wide bike plan. A constant roadblock to accomplishing this task has been a handful of wealthy residents along one of Windsor's signature streets; Riverside Drive.
The environmental assesset has been completed, including having it ushered to the Environment Minister by these residents in another one of their attempts to delay/derail the bike lanes. Windsor's cycling community finally thought they were on the right path, when this now-incorporated residents association hired a Toronto (can't they even buy local, for crissakes?!?) lawyer to throw another wrench in the works.
Follow the continuing saga on www.scaledown.ca
This video is meant to show the cycing conditions of this roadway, as well as some of the other reasons these resients may object to widening the road for bike lanes.
Something tells me altruism isn't the first thing on their mind.

First of all the east bound bike lane doesn't end at Riverside and Strabane, it takes a left on Strabane and right on Wyandotte and continues east till George. I agree the city needs continuous but why do they need to be on Riverside Drive? The drive is a narrow road in very poor condition, Wyandotte would be a more suitable road with the ability to tie the bike lanes into the existing Ganatchio Trail. The true issue should be bike lanes "not bike lanes on riverside".

The city should have never allowed building on city property. But they did, allowed and ignored it for years. So whose fault is it? Once you let that happen taking it back decades later is extremely difficult. Its like knocking on your 1985 college roomates door today and asking for your walkman back. I find it hard to beleive all the people who built on "city" property did so without permits.

To put it in perspective, imagine your child riding their bike along Riverside Drive and being as close to vehicles travelling 50 - 60km/h as the person in this video. I ride my bike in the city year-round. Many drivers respect cyclists and I appreciate the majority who do, but it's the inconsiderate ones that make bike riding on the road so dangerous in Windsor. Take a ride to see for yourself. I dare ya!

yes, but on a road that is so hazardous to ride your bike, I think you could employ some common sense in order to not risk your life. No police officer will give you a ticket for being safe :-)
