How do connectivity patterns inside of your brain change when you learn a new skill? Danielle Bassett seeks to uncover this complexity and develop treatments for neurological diseases with math-and art.
As the youngest recipient of the 2014 MacArthur Award Genius Grant and an Assistant Professor of Innovation in the University of Pennsylvania's Department of Bioengineering, Danielle Bassett derives mathematical models from aesthetic representations of brain networks. She aims to diagram the organizational principles in the human brain and understand how brain networks can be reconfigured to quickly incorporate new information and enhance learning, tackling seemingly unsolvable problems with grace and confidence.
This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at ted.com/tedx

Assuming flexibility = plasticity, why not introduce meditation and/or psychedelics to improve learning? Both are known to increase brain plasticity.

Good question. In psychedelics, might it be too fast learning and not well integrating with long term processes?; losing access to such knowledge, when the psychedelics are washed out?

That's interesting.

Could you link up the brain to a computer by connecting just a few of my human neurons to some external machine network ? , What if you just put in an empty network and let your own brain fill it with data ? Do certain shapes of networks just make you smarter in the human brain ? Why are some people really smart, is it the network structure rather than the data that allows higher intelligence? Is there a network shape in the brain for improved creativity or improved motor skills or better memory ?

Lots of answers and research on this fields; no simple answer but yes, there are several correlations with different abilities (intelligence) as well with patohology (brain disorders, like depression or squizophrenia).

@@Canonimus Well I think depression is maybe more chemical based linked to our feelings. I would be thinking more just for logical intelligence. Paww Imagine we could create new feelings with machines though, amazing

@@DerekFolan The chemical basis are needed but are not specific, but the functional connection of the brain give us a lot more info and correlations, that we can use in different settings and for different goals. So chemically we now know that is not the best way to measure the bran function (that was from the 70-80s). To produce new expiriences is such a weak concept, we do use machines all the time to get emotional expirience, I do not understand what you do mean exactly. Regards

@@Canonimus Just that depression is more chemical based than logic based. Maybe it's even secondary intelligence systems in the body that feel and feedback that to the brain. Maybe to be not depressed we could hack the brains logic to interpret bad inputs from the body as positive, in a way causing a brain dysfunction to trick the mind into thinking the body felt ok. Is it the brain that feels or is it each individual cell. Is all intelligence in the brain ? Do chemicals make the brain feel good, or does the brain decide logically it feels good and then releases chemicals ? I think if it was just logic then the brain would not need chemicals. I think if we can figure out logic to set people's bodies to different chemical balances then we can unlock more of our intellectual ability, The ability to feel confidence, drive and self belief and happiness is the difference between Presidents and failures in life, pawww maybe we just need liver regulation logic to control our blood chemistry. After that maybe our brains just need some blank addition logic networks to give us more technical abilities, Can we get computers to function like the brain and connect to our brains to improve senses but also to give us things like maths abilities or languages. Will these add ons be empty for us to fill with data ourselves or will they come filled with the data. Maybe it's the shape of a network that makes some people geniuses, pawww its hard to know
