The Undertaker sacrificing Stephanie McMahon on his symbol is why I wasn't allowed to watch wrestling when I was younger. From my appearance on the Six Feet Under with Mark Calaway podcast #wwe #wrestling #undertaker
Yeah. And then he judged because he thought his batshit idiot ideology was being insulted. The man should have put his effort into arriving mentally in the 20th century instead of basing his son's education on some fantasy bullshit that some deranged person made up 2000 years ago.
I had that kind of luck before, I invited my two best friends to watch Neon Genesis Evangelion because I thought it was cool, and it turned out to be the very meta finale episode with no fighting...I never took an L so badly from my friends, lol.
Shows how much he loved and still loves the fans and entertaining them. Must've been tough for him emotionally in the early days seeing little kids genuinely TERRIFIED of him in the crowd.
My dad said it better than most. "Son, you need to know this is all a show, they're all actors, like the guy on the western movies, he isn't a real cowboy". He told me wrestling wasn't real, while still respecting the show in his own way.
My mom saw a promo where it was kane vs undertaker and they were discussing who was the devils favorite as soon as she heard that it was all over 👍 ;-;
My dad also didn’t watch wrestling or anymore when I was growing up. But he was the unlucky parent that had to take me to one of my first events. That one being Mankind vs Undertake Hell In A Cell in Pittsburgh Pa and I’ll never forget that match turned my dad into a fan and we watched together until he passed.
I remember when I started watching, my mom wasn't all too happy with the violence, until one day my dad was like, the fuck is that Rick flair he's still wrestling!? This was like around 06/07, and he sat with us and started telling us some of the live events he went to back in the day. The look on his face was just like wow and laughing, saying I can't believe he's still kicking. I mean, he is the goat for a reason. I never even knew my dad was a wrestling fan. Those are one of the moments you never forget as an adult great times.
THIS was why I was banned from watching WWE for decades by my parents, and also WWE was being shown on terrestrial free television up to that point and the broadcaster Channel 4 ended their contract instantly, where it was moved to Sky Sports and I didn't have Sky Sports. Despite it, I was still allowed to watch TNA Impact and their PPVs a few years later (and that also included "the Beautiful People" and ODB) 😂. Obviously I had to watch WWE secretly in school via recorded videos from friends for years until mobile signals were good enough in the late 2000s to watch it live on my laptop and smartphone.
My cousins one day put on the HBK vs Sheldon Benjamin match when it was posted on RU-vid. Our parents and family were all belittling it the entire time calling it "fake" and asking why we were watching. They started to get more invested as the match went on, and then all of a sudden the spot happened, right when HBK hit the Sweet Chin Music on a flying Shelton, the entire house popped.
That was frowned upon in my youth but still would be able to watch it. However, as soon as Trish Stratus, Stacy Keibler, Torrie Wilson and to an extent Lita appeared on screen it was time to change the channel. Could see blood and violence but sex nope. Its still like this to this day.
Back when we rented VHS tapes, the one time my parents watched a WWF ppv was when Miss Kitty showed the world her goods, then Mae Young did it too. Suffice to say my parents were a little disappointed in me for that lol.
That was the Rumble, maybe 1999? Possibly the best moment in wrestling history nobody talks about, if only for everyones reaction to the whole segment going off the rails, but especially J.R and King. 😆
You could always turn it over to Nitro and watch Oklahoma vs Madusa or the Viagra on a Pole match. Just an awkward time to watch wrestling with your parents in general. Safest bet was probably ECW at this time. 😂
I refuse to believe that not one single person in creative, or in the segments themselves, stopped and thought to themselves "Y'know, people might see strapping someone to a giant cross-like symbol as a crucifixion". C'mon, Taker is my GOAT, but stop insulting my intelligence with the "it was only a symbol" excuses. I was born in the morning, but not this morning. 😂
@@robertlunderwood yeah Dark Ministry Undertaker was his best heel character of all time imo sure the story get wacky especially that "twist" but still it was one of the best Taker run alongside The American Badass
As a fellow wrestling fan a part of me still feels envious that I was born in '99 and didn't start watching wrestling until 2007, meanwhile my older brother every now and again still brings up my late mom almost doing the same thing as Chris's dad did, but it was when Austin nearly got embalmed alive. Sacrifices via crucifixion, murder almost happening on more than one occasion, Bossman being hanged after a Hell In A Cell match, the whole Pillmans got a gun situation; I genuinely feel like I was robbed of seeing bat shit insane things happening on a weekly basis
You deff missed an insane era of wrestling, I started in the summer of 98, right it was was catching fire, 98-01 in my opinion the best years in wrestling ever, those of us that were watching back then were spoiled..
I was actually at the show in Chattanooga where Taker caught the teddy bear on fire. It was Undertaker vs Kane in an inferno match on Raw. I was 10 years old and losing my mind watching my two heroes try to set each other on fire.
Reminded me of how Undertaker was the reason I watched WCW instead of WWF for the most part as a kid. Those segments scared the hell of out me lmao. Now he’s one my favorites of all time.
That's exactly what my dad did. He saw all this and said it's fake. Then I see you and Mick killing each other. And my father loved Terminator. Go figure. Thanks for the stories.
I always find the "it's fake" argument from non-fans hilarious. Like, no shit it's fake. It's television. Arnie actually just being some big Austrian dude and not a killer robot doesn't make Terminator less awesome.
That’s nothing. I was watching Raw in the living room with my parents in 2002. What made it awkward was it was the Katy Vick segment. Triple H having sex with a corpse in a casket lol.
I'll never forget when even Shawn Michaels & Vince poked fun of it on a segment on Raw. Vince said "Ddid it offend your religious beliefs?" and Shawn said what EVERYONE was thinking; It offended him as a wrestling fan!
OMG, it's so nice to know that I wasn't the only kid whose parent forbid them from watching wrestling! I also had to sneak and watch it all the way through high school. But man, my mother was tough to hide that from 🤣
This happened to me a lot growing up. Every time i watched wrestling, mum was always in some other room. The moment she'd enter and sit and watch with me, sable or torrie wilson or HLA segments would suddenly pop up. Hated that timing.
This is some 100 percent legit truth, right here. I watched religiously, didn't matter where I was, who's house I was visiting, 8 o'clock on Thursday (and after the move to Friday) was a set block for me. And once I got cable, Mondays were locked in as well. I was at a friend's house on a Friday afternoon/evening, parents were out having a night on the town, we got pizza and soda delivered... 8 hits and I tell my buddy, "Yo, I gotta borrow a TV. My shows on!" I borrow their smaller TV in the smaller family room and leave him the big screen in the main living room because we were playing GameCube at the time, if I recall right... Watch the entire show without any problems and his parents come home during the main event while Undertaker is making his entrance! It was well after his American Badass gimmick, when he brought back the gong, organs, and classic hat and duster all in blue light, rolling back his eyes, thunder and the whole bit. I finished watching the match and got told by my buddy, "Dad says you're not allowed to watch wrestling in this house anymore."
My Dad always went on about not getting it.. but said he LOVED pro wrestling as a kid 🤷🏽♂️ so idk, but we went to all the big shows EXCEPT for an episode of Raw- the ONLY show I haven’t been to weird enough.. but SmackDown PPVs .. TONS of house shows but was ALWAYS like “idk why you watch this stuff” … 😂😂 but I was that closet watcher too man- kinda had to be and with girls at school if a friend ousted you in front of everyone- you were DONE FOR!! 😂🤦🏽♂️
@@StoicJohny nahh WCW was trash by then.. January of ‘99 Souled out came to my hometown - but announced it like a year beforehand at a house show so we’re STILL really into it but like 6 months later I’m going into 7th grade WCW started getting lame and kids were getting made fun of for watching still … so like late ‘99 I didn’t touch wrestling for about a year and then started the closet watching til about ‘03 and then started wearing all my old wrestling shirts and wear a different one everyday.. 2000-2003 wrestling was the WEAKEST it’d ever been up until that point people may have been watching where u were but not like they DID or some tunes art
It's like every time you're playing the the old Smackdown games and of course the second your Mom walks in the Trish Stratus loading screen comes up. 😅😂
Neighbor and his wife were both ministers at their church. The three boys the had loved coming over on Monday nights to watch WWE. I had no clue the family didn't even own a TV. The sons were not allowed to watch TV at all. The mother came over to use our pool on night and was telling us how happy the boys liked coming over and babysitting for us on Mondays... my wife and I were confused and told her they came over to watch wrestling... She didn't say anything. But apparently she mentioned it to the eldest son. She allowed them to continue to come over and "babysit" for us. Their mom was cool.
Omg this legit happened basically the same with me. I wanted to watch wrestling so bad, my parents wouldn't let me. And it was this episode of Raw that was on. They also give Ken Shamrock a bloodbath.
Man The Attitude Era was something else man.. -Getting hung up in a symbol -Falling off the cell -hanging up the opponent after a cell match with a rope No wonder his dad was like "nah you're not watching this"
My Dad taking me to a WWF event in Nashville at the old Municipal Auditorium in the late 80's or very early 90's, put me on the path to watching wrestling til my sophomore yr in high school
First time I watched wrestling my religious aunt busted my cousin and I when The Brood was on. Second time my other aunt was upset because Eddie Guerrero was shouting at Vickie. Thankfully I brought my dad to the live show in Belfast and not my mum, because the divas had a striptease and Eddie Guerrero showed everyone Kurt Angle's bare butt. I would've missed Taker in the Main Event if it was my mum with me.
I'm a lifelong Christian, and I was even more religious as a teenager than what I am now. I watched RAW every week. Taker was my favorite and my dad liked him as well. Heck my parents got me a shirt of his with "lord of darkness" written on the back Me and him watched horror movies and my dad loved things like vampires and demons. People need to calm down about this stuff, the Bible even says that 'The LORD dwells in darkness'
The storyline of Undertaker stalking Stephanie Mcmahon was around the time i started watching WWE (WWF back then) religiously. It was a great time to be tuning in from 1999-2003, you never knew what was gonna happen. ❤❤❤
Seeing you talking about the WWE with such a passion is so heartwarming. It brings me back to my childhood were me and my dad used to watch it on tv at night. He LOVED Undertaker. So yeah, quite the opposite experience from you and your father 😅 Still, I cannot thank you enough for sitting down with the wrestlers themselves and sharing all these memories. It truly brings me joy ❤
Crazy. My dad took me wrestlemania when they came to Detroit it was at ford field I think maybe 2008ish? I’m not sure but I was still young. One of my fondest memories. He used to buy all the ppv for me and we would watch them on the couch. Good times
My mom saw that Vince McMahon wanted to “fight God” and I was not allowed to watch wrestling until and I can’t believe this happened we ran into good o’l JR Jim Ross outside of the hard rock in Las Vegas smoking a cigarette where I grew up and asked him are they still doing the God stuff??? And he said “Thank God no that was horrible” only then by JR’s own approval did my mom allow us to watch wrestling again.
My brother's best friend got into pro wrestling in the late 90s. He came from a religious family and was also given the WWF ban hammer when his dad saw the clip of Undertaker crucifying Austin on Raw. Since they didn't have television and knew our house was where we watched Raw every week, he wasn't allowed to come over for like a month until things cooled off. 😂
My dad was a Hulkamaniac. He got salty seeing Taker beat Hogan and stopped watching around the time Hogan moved to WCW(idk if WCW was available in the Philippines, but maybe that's why). But I was born on the same day his favorite made his WrestleMania return after switching to WCW and he lucked out celebrating his firstborn's birth by introducing newborn to Hogan while he was staring down The Rock. I don't think he desired to watch anymore after Hogan finished his WWE run but he'd play old matches of the Hulkster until his old Toshiba laptop gave out.
We all watched wrestling together as a family. My parents even took my brother & I to a live episode of Smack Down. My mom made us shirts of our favorite wrestlers & everything. I remember her screaming with pure joy when Stone Cold came out. 😂 Actually, during that show, Doink the clown came out in the crowd and was standing right next to us. I could have reached right out and touched him! Really cool memory, thanks mom & dad.
I never missed an episode from 1996 till the end of the attitude era!!!!My mom was cool asf!!! made it a thing to go to blockbuster or Hollywood movies and I would get at least 5 wrestling tapes from Wrestmanias To summerslams!!! Whatever they had i rented lol!!! She literally let me watch and didn’t bother me!!! What a time to be alive!!! Went to my first wrestling match at 5!!! I’m 34 now and still a fan!!!
😂😂😂 had a very similar experience. Basically almost everyone in my family either hated or didn’t care for wrestling. I finally convinced my family to let me watch on the “big tv”. My dad was sitting there with me and seemed somewhat invested. But unfortunately for me, it was when Austin gave his infamous “Austin 3:16” post match promo. Did I mention my dad was a pastor. Seeing the smile melt off his face was heart wrenching. Surprisingly he didn’t discourage me from watching but he let me know he wasn’t a fan of that promo and needless to say he never watched with me again. 😢
Got caught watching diva search segment during ruthless aggression era, safe to say my grandmother didn't let me watch wrestling at her house anymore i was 9 btw
In Canada, Raw played on TSN at 9 and then again at midnight. I remember being like 14-15 and staying up past midnight and watching with very low volume this masterpiece of a raw episode, the stephanie sacrifice segment. And when SCSA saved her, i probably believed it was real i was so into it. Great moment for sure!
I would have to watch livewire on Saturday mornings sometimes bc the live airing with my parents were risky asf. I remember watching the bear burning on livewire
I think why we love the 90s so much was how easy it was to outsmart your parents, we ended up watching stuff and getting games that they didn't want us to play. Now we've grown up and we know the exact tricks our children play, if my eldest is too quiet for too long, he's doing something he's not meant to be doing
Everything he’s saying is exactly what my Dad was like when I watched wrestling as a kid. He would literally stand in front of the TV during a match, arms crossed, legs spread out, asking us why we, me and my brothers, are watching this “fake shit”. He would even deliberately go out of his way to turn Raw or Smackdown, or any PPV, off so he can watch his football games or whatever, even though he had a whole other TV in his room.
Grew up devout Catholic. Great grandma was the most devout, your typical Mexican abuela. Always watching the EWTN religious channel, always quoting scripture, always telling me and my brothers “repent” at every opportunity and throwing the 10 commandments at us when we did something bad. So naturally anytime AAA and CMLL were on tv she had us sit down and watch it with her. R.I.P grandma, you’re part of the reason why I’m such a mark and I’ll love you forever for it ❤
Big respect to Dirck! He made the best decision based on the information he had! But man, the timing of his information gathering was the absolute worst 😂😂😂
With how strict my parents were I'm surprised I was able to watch wrestling growing up. My heart broke when I, shall we say, learned about the performative nature of the wrestling
I wasn't allowed to watch during the Attitude Era but when I was older my dad told me he remembered Taker debuting and it was such a huge spectacle and show to it xD.
My mom sat down and watched wrestling with me once it just so happened to be the episode Vince had Trish barking like a dog . You wanna talk about a mom face getting shot at me 😂
Something similar happened to me, I wasn't yet a professional wrestler but already an adult and I was watching it with my younger brother who was still in high school, and my dad, when suddenly one of the words Taker uttered sounded like "an*l", and we all bursted in laughter, but then my dad straightened his face and said "alright guys, this isn't appropriate, so we're not watching The Ministry's segments anymore". 😂😂😂
Reminds me of a friend of mine whose parents wouldn't let him watch wrestling, so I would tape Raw and Smackdown for him and then give him the tape at school so he could watch it over the weekend. Then he'd give the tape back Monday morning and I'd record the shows all over again.
My parents were fans of wrestling during the '80s and often watched it with us in the 90's. Fun times. They even ordered us most of the ppvs and we didn't have a whole hell of a lot of money .
