Games mentioned: Undertale EarthBound Homestuck Mother Cognitive Dissonance Cave Story Touhou Project Yume Nikki The legend of Zelda Yandere Simulator Ace Attorney Final Fantasy VI
Don't forget the fact that Toby put himself in the game as a dog and in the drug store of onett in earthbound you can find a white dog and he tells you he is the creator
I’m not going. To play undertale or be a fan of it after this video because he just copied everything and I thought his game was a great idea and had alot of cool things but he just stole it and he didn’t make the idea him self and the songs are just stolen
@@dinosharttt Inspiring and giving references are really far from stealing. Not even mentioning that these are not the most important parts of the game.
Why? I'm both an Undertale fan and a Touhou fan, the UNDYNE the UNDYING fight is a small nod to Touhou, you have the music, ZUNPETS, Bullet Hell, and difficulty. It's not even close to Touhous, but it gave me a challenge
I have a feeling Toby Fox really likes to recycle some of his own made themes other peoples created themes and make it into something new and I love that kind of creativity
Before fighting Undyne, she says "I, Undyne, will knock you down!" Which is a reference to the first Final Fantasy in which Garland says "I, Garland, will knock you all down!"
Undyne’s name itself might also be another reference. I mean sure, you have the Undyne Undying joke but perhaps there’s something else... Water Sign “Princess Undine”, one of Patchouli’s spellcards from EoSD. Water. Undine. Undyne is a fish. Fish live in water.
An Undine is a water nymph, so while you may be correct, it’s also possible that they both drew inspiration from mythology. Edit: Fuck this, it’s probable, not possible.
Don't forget about the Touhou references on the characters creation: -Frisk and Chara's colours are almost the same as Satori and Koishi, Satori get along with animals and Koishi has a knife (even if Frisk is supposed to be based on Ness) -Papyrus is from a snow level, that we can considerate like the stage 2, and he is dumb, like our Beloved Tomboyish Girl, Cirno the Ice Fairy -Asgore's weapon are similar to Remilia's Gungir Bonus: -On the PS4 version, there is a dog shrine and you can donate, it is like the Hakurei Shrine from Touhou -The whole plot of Undertale is based on Touhou 11: Sealed Youkais underground who want to escaped, creatures who want become as strong as God -Omega Flowey's battle is literaly a bullet hell, but the soul's attacks are like spell cards
Toby Fox is a huge fan of EarthBound like Frisk They all have stripped shirt. -Ninten -Ness -Lucas Memoryhead looks like reference to Giygas' Earthbound also have Flowey
@@harrypotamus4968 If it exist its the newest. The community doesn't have to know. Yes, i answer back two months later.I just didnt care about your reply back then.
Undertale and Touhou fandoms to each other: your game(s) suck ZUN: ah yes a normal day in Gensokyo Toby:They clearly didn't know we are friends, Shrine housewife (they proceed to make themselves drunk and continue working)
I feel like you spent TOO much time on Yandere simulator and Touhou Project so I'm going to make a quick list of stuff you missed: 1. The games dialogue itself, has many Earthbound references. Like how Sans says "On days like these, kids like you..." referencing a police officer with the exact same dialogue in Earthbound. 2. Frisk's design is an amalgamation of Ness from Earthbound, and Madotsuki from Yume Nikki. They wear a stripped shirt like Ness and have Asian eyes like Madotsuki. (The yellow skin is a mystery to me) 3. Speaking of Yume Nikki, That "Chill" scene with Nabstablook is an overall homage to Yume Nikki. 4. Sans and Papyrus are oddly similar to two other comic characters named after fonts. It helps that J N Weedle's name is in Papyrus and Sans' credits. 5. Flowey is an ENTIRE can of references. His theme syncs up well with the F.U.N song from Spongebob, most of his and the Amalgamates voice clips, are edited versions of McDonald's commercials, and his iconic laugh is taken from a PS1 game (that I can't name) 6. Once Upon a Time is a reference to the song Mother Earth from (use your best guess) and the opening sequence about the war against humans and monsters, has a very similar story to that of Cave Story 7. The song Determination was actually suppose to have a Zelda 1 game over vibe to it, but Toby was too lazy to change the pitch of the song in FL Studio. 8. The track Thundersnail is an edited sample on FL Studio 9. The hidden song Star has the same soundfont as the original Star Fox 10. Gaster's theme sounds similar to Lavander Town 11. Almost every song that centers the Annoying Dog, was made in Mario Paint. 12. A deticated artist by the name of Michelle Czajkowski (creator of Ava's Demon) donated to a joke tier on the Kickstarter page. That character later went on to be Muffet. Obviously, a reference to the famous nursery rhyme.
Dragoneex yea, I can tell. Since I'm a huge fan of Undertale in general, so I can respect that. I mean I wouldn't blame you. If I made an Undertale reference video, THE AMOUNT of Yume Nikki and Cave Story shit I'd focus on, would drive any fan of those 5 into insanity.
I love touhou more than undertale but I won't say undertale was a bad game at all. If touhou fans and underale fans could put their difference aside, we could maybe one day see a touhou/undertale crosss over? Im just kidding I doubt that will happen but could be nice.
I like undertale the game as a whole but a large chunk of the community is garbage and ruins it Touhou as a game is really hard (from my standpoint lol) but it’s community is pretty nice and cool, only a small portion of it is hella toxic (basicly none) Overall I’m just a casual gamer who likes to vibe with whatever
Yeah the touhou fanbase is one of the most chill fan bases I have come across. I have rarely seen anyone from the touhou community attacking other people (excluding undertale) unless your are intentionally rocking the boat, even then its only the really salty ones that will pick fights. Any time I have ever seen someone ask "what is touhou?" or "who is x character" or even the dreaded "Is touhou an anime?", the fan base will generally try to answer the question in great detail even linking wiki pages, etc. The community is also really accepting towards people who have never played a touhou game. Infact, I'd say a little over half of the western touhou fan base has never even played a single touhou game. That being said, its probably because of the natural barrier to entry that the touhou series has. You need to know a fair bit of the plot/characters of the popular games (EoSD, PCB, IN, MoF) if you even hope to understand most of the memes and inside jokes of the community. There is also a lot of overlap with the touhou community and the anime community, which is also generally pretty chill as well (excluding the MHA and similar fan bases of course). All of these factors generally attract people who are over the age of 14 making the community more mature as a whole. On the other hand, undertale is way easier compared to touhou and also easier to find (its literally on the front page of steam most of the time) while touhou games are near impossible to find unless you know where to look. Undertale also tends to attract edgy kids who are between the ages of 8 and 12. That group of people are generally not the most friendly which makes the Undertale community pretty toxic. I feel like if you removed everyone under the age of 15 from the Undertale community, it wouldn't be too dissimilar to the touhou community but the small children give the community a bad reputation considering they make up a pretty good majority of it. Anyway, this comment was ment to be short but I ended up writing an entire fucking essay about the touhou and Undertale communitys. TL;DR: the touhou fanbase is chill and nice and the Undertale fanbase is toxic cause of small children
@@RemsHusband That is true. I learned about touhou when i was 16 and people were happy to introduce me to it and talk about it. I was shared songs, lore and even places to find the game.
The Okuu and Yatsuhashi references were a bit far fetched. Also the inspiration from asgore's fight was from flan's fight, cranberry trap, rather than UFO.
Love how almost like 96% of these is Touhou Project, lol. I love both Touhou and Undertale, I didn't know this before, so this made me love both games even more!!
Fun fact: toby fox worked on homestuck by making music and he actually named kankri and if you listen to his work on the homestuck ost you will hear lot of parts that would be used in undertale
Tsunderplane is a “tsundere” a type of anime girl, it means someone who is madly in love with her love interest (most of the time male protagonist) but tries so hard to hide it from the male protagonist that she on occasion gets violent and says “it’s not like i like you!’
Look up her dialogues in touhou 8 and the ground fighters. She likes to lie, tease people and stuff.and she manipulate borders, including the GAMES borders, she 4th wall breaks just like sans.
Its canon that she often trolls around by stealing Reimu's food right in front of her mouth and barge into Marisa's house without permission by using her gap powers.
well, he even said that he liked touhou and was an inspiration twitter.com/tobyfox/status/999209960536850433 twitter.com/tobyfox/status/999210405959426048
Hey! Seems you forgot some more: Dating Tense! Is either a reference to Suspense from Ace Attorney or Heavy Rainfall from Pokémon Sapphire And Dating Fight! Is a reference to Pursuit Cornered - Variation, from Ace Attorney.
You forgot AlterniaBound's version of "MeGaLoVania", and "Brodylovania". The original "Megalovania" is based on "Gadobadorrer", Toby also took inspiration from "Megalomania". So, "MEGALOVANIA" is, indirectly, a remix of these two songs.
Well I don't really get it either.... I think it's really just because ut fans back in 2015 were awful and triggered a lot of touhou fans for saying that bullet hell weren't hard cuz they've beaten sans...also a lot of people came from bad apple and said "hey! It's from ut right?" And other stuff I guess :) But even if I prefer touhou...I loved ut so I don't care about this war X)
Not really "butthurt" just saying salty UT fans might be salty about Touhou references in UT (and a lot I've seen myself were, like once someone said Asriel's moves were inspired from Marissa once to a UT fanboy and they were going apeshit) It's just the toxic side of UT haven't found this video yet
I was an earthbound and touhou fan before knowing undertale imagine how I was butthurted when some pf my friends were like: woow this is so original ! Though I don't hate UT its a great game and toby fox has rly good taste like everyone else I'm just annoyed by the fans. I know Its really childish but it's the same feeling as suggesting an anime to a friend he says "heh nope it doesn't interest me" and he come back 2 months later showing you the wish version of it saying it's the greatest game of all time. It just hurts you know...
The symbols on Toriel and Asriel's outfit has three triangles, if one of the triangle (which is the bellow one) moved to the top (Edit : and rotated 180°), it would looks like Triforce
Everyone talking about tornabout sisters and dating start being similar, but I think I'm the only one who thinks that detention center and bergentrückung sound very similar even if no one is taking about it
I always thought 4:04 might be a reference to the piano part in BL1ND JUST1C3: 1NV3ST1G4T1ON (starting at around 45 seconds in), given Toby's previous work on Homestuck, but the Touhou one also sounds very close Possible he took influence from both?
@@vitaliykormov1266 BTW bcause of my Cousins who hate UT and Loved Touhou so much.... I stopped playing UT anymore(╥﹏╥) which is a bummer.... That's why I love Touhou now but. The one i love from UT is CHARA AND SANS
Another possible/unintentional reference/inspiration: Sans’ gimmick of dodging the players’ attacks is similar to the boss Fiend Matador from Shin Megami Tensei III: Nocturne, a skeleton with a signature skill called Red Capote, which raises his evasion by four stages, meaning that half the time the Demi-fiend and his demon’s attacks will miss unless they are either really lucky or debuff his stats.
Chronologically I love Ace Attorney (2016) I love Undertale (2018) I love Touhou (2020) I love Earthbound (2023) But I never noticed that all these games were references to Undertale. Thank you very much Toby Fox (From France) 😢😍
