Yes mettaton fight would’ve been more impactful if he attacked first but sans attacking first wouldn’t have been as impactful then either. His attack going first is a shock that helps to show his fight is different. Mettaton being able to attack first may have made his “fight” more impactful, but at the cost of the climax of the genocide run. This coming from someone who just dislikes sans and who’s favorite character is mettaton, I think for the sake of the narrative sans being the only first attacker works

Jayden There are theories that do a reasonably good job of explaining why mettaton neo didn't have a full fledged boss fight. Let's get the boring one out of the way. Budget cut or Toby simply decided against the idea for no reason in particular. Now the interesting idea. It's generally believed that Undyne is the "heroine" of the story during the genocide route. One thing that stands out, undyne the undying is the only monster to not be killed in one hit throughout the entire genocide route. She was the first thing to actually stop you, albeit temporarily. She was the first and only monster who could survive multiple hits from the player. Notice how sans, mettaton, and asgore all take 9999+ damage. They had no chance of surviving an attack from the player. They simply were not anywhere near as strong as undyne. It's an interesting theory. After you kill undyne, the Underground's fate is sealed. The hero has failed, and no one else had a chance to stand in the player's way. Mettaton was just to weak to put up any kind of a fight.

Sans is more difficult than Undyne, but not stronger. And the only reason why is because he messes with the game’s mechanics. Sans also acknowledges this, and knows he can’t win. The entire point of his battle is to get you to give up. Overall, yes, Undyne IS the strongest monster in the underground. But she can’t screw with the meta and remember previous timelines. Therefore on subsequent Genocide Routes, you’d have memorized her patterns, and her confidence would be misplaced.

Interesting fact: Mettaton NEO is the strongest character in the game without a human soul or determination

Mettaton NEO’s defense is -40000 and his HP is 30000. An attack that would normally do 1 damage would do 40001 damage, which is 10001 more then his health, allowing things such as a froggit or sans to one shot him.

Also if there was a big fight before sans all your good healing items would be used and that would be especially bad to players who didn’t know about sans

The difference is you get new items between undyne and sans for most genocide sans items that are used 4 of them are from hotland/mettaton resort as the noodles face steak and legendary heros even if you used every other item on undyne you still have a full heal a close to full heal and as many half heals as your inventory holds

@THE SKELETON APPEARS I really don't think that matters all that much to someone who can deal a million damage at that point. Undyne the Undying had 99DEF, which is only around 1/3 of Mettaton's base defense. Mettaton NEO had 9DEF, and at the bare minimum, takes 900,000 damage. 9 × 11 = 99 900,000 ÷ 11 = 81,000. Undyne the Undying had 23,000HP. That means that she would've gotten attacked with such force to one shot her almost *4 times over.* And that's only using the minimum. Even box Mettaton would've gotten shredded like wet paper, let's be real.

Toby committed one mistake: He assumed that, at that point, you'd attack in your first turn. Many people check their enemies, and doing that would expose MTT not having any attack. He should have only one attack that looks like hell but it's actually easy, so the player thinks that they dodged it because of good luck. Then they attack and kill him. It'd be more credible.

And besides the techniques used there (The *L.E.G.S.* defence system and Energy Sword), I was thinking that not only could he also mix in fast jabbing and swinging kicks with his sword attacks (Especially later on, when his patterns become faster and more complex), but he could also make use of his Arm Cannon and Rocket Wings more effectively. For those, I was thinking that he could use rapid-fire and charged (IE. Bigger blasts that explode on contact) laser shots to start with, then moving later on to electrical bursts, columns of lightning, and eventually even more powerful lasers that function a lot like slower Gaster Blasters. He'll also start flying and hovering using his Rocket Wings, firing off shots from mid-air and swooping down to use his Energy Sword and diving kicks. However, despite being able to block and dodge attacks early on, the power drain will eventually begin to take its toll as the player survives his attacks, leading to him having to divert power from his Defences to his Weapons to try and kill them, growing increasingly more powerful and unstable over time but allowing the player to begin attacking him. Eventually when he does run out of health, he can either be spared or killed. If he's spared, he'll acknowledge that you're not completely evil and shut down with a pained smile, relieved that you're not going to hurt Alphys or the evacuated monsters. Of course, this sends you back to the Neutral Route. If he's attacked again, he'll activate a self-destruct bomb he has rigged in his housing and taunt you about it (_"Look on the bright side, darling. _*_We're both going to go out with a bang!_*_"_) with a venomous grin. He has to be attacked again within five seconds to stop it and kill him properly, or else he'll detonate and kill you with him, causing an instant Game Over.

Thanks for the reception so far, everyone! Turning it into an actual thing (or at least, an animation) could definitely be something worth doing at some point. [Neutral, Phases 2 and 3] As the stage lights continue to illuminate the arena, nearby smoke machines cover the floor with a silvery fog. [After using his Arm Cannon for the first time] Mettaton NEO blows smoke from the barrel of his Metta Cannon, and points it at you threateningly. [Arm Cannon] Mettaton NEO wipes the side of his Metta Cannon with one hand, and admires himself in its reflection. [Energy Sword] Mettaton NEO locks eyes with you as he slowly runs a hand along the side of his Energy Sword. A shower of blue and white sparks is kicked up along the blade. [After being hit by the Energy Sword] Mettaton NEO licks charred red dust off the edge of his Energy Sword in a sinister fashion. You wonder how on Earth he's doing it without getting burned. [After being hit by the Energy Sword twice in a row] Mettaton NEO explains that he's a robot, and can therefore lick particles off of hot plasma. [After being hit by the Energy Sword three times in a row] Also, because he's Mettaton. The standard laws of Physics do not apply if you are Mettaton. [Neutral, Phase 2] Smells like Silicon-Carbide. (A reference to the substance that when used as an abrasive, is almost as hard as diamond.) [Neutral, Phase 2] Smells like Lithium-Polymer. (A reference to LiPo Batteries.) [After using Flight for the first time] Mettaton NEO hovers just above the ground using his rocket wings. Tiny glowing embers begin to descend around him. An indicator on it shows that he’s up to medium-level charge. [Before using the AntiMetta Cannon/slower Gaster Blaster-like weapon for the first time] Mettaton NEO is storing up even more energy in his Metta Cannon. The indicator now shows that the weapon is fully-charged, and a strobe appears to be going off behind him. [Phase 3/Shields dropped, attack power increases] Mettaton NEO is diverting power from his defences to his offence. Now might be a good time to try attacking. [Phase 3] Mettaton NEO’s neck and shoulders twitch erratically. [Phase 3] Mettaton NEO is beginning to lose his cool. He’s up to something. [Phase 3] Mettaton NEO’s face and arms glitch for a moment. Look on the bright side, though. _*_WE’RE BOTH GOING TO GO OUT WITH A BANG!_*_”_ [At this point, the player has only ten seconds to act accordingly.
