Just to clarify, I completely understand the things getting in but not out part, just not WHY the humans made the barrier that way in the first place if it was designed to keep the monsters underground 💀
cause... it literally keeps the monsters underground...???????? And we don't know the capabilities of the Humans of that era, maybe it's simply the fact that this was the best continuous barrier they could create, and it's not something uncommon, even in works like Jujutsu Kaisen the domain expansions work like that, being in most cases easily breakable/enterable from the outside but almost impossible to break/leave from the inside.
Maybe rounding up all the monsters and putting them in the cave, and then creating the barrier was too hard so they instead made it one-way so monsters could get put in at different times without any fight. Like a jail. And maybe it's just a law against the nature of magic to have a barrier that locks stuff up forever.
I got a wild theories: there may have been a/some human(s) that knew not all monsters were evil creatures as the majority did, so the idea of the barrier may have been brought up by them and the humans went with it, without knowing that the barrier could be broken if requirements were met, which the human(s) that were in favor of the monsters probably planned to let them out at a later time. However, upon learning this flaw in the barrier, the majority humans may have then executed monster favoring human(s) to then make sure the monster stayed sealed. And extra theory on top of that, the hole itself may have potential even been use for further executions by corrupt politicians, shady folk, or maybe even for future humans that conspired to free the monsters for whatever reason.

It was stated anything can enter but nothing can exit, also, it was never stated from the human side to be designed to separate the two races, only to seal the monsters underground.
That's true, regardless of the intention though it's clear the humans wanted them to stay there but still made it possible for the monsters to break out eventually LOL
@@MysticSlime Hi sir, I'm nowhere near as afluent as you are in terms of lore, but I'd heard the reason it could be destroyed by 7 souls is because it was created by 7 Humans so you need 7 Souls in order to match the barriers Power, which you can then overpower with the host's soul power too

@@AiwaSchawa you could see it that way. It's like-- they see the monsters as dangerous right? So they want to keep them in one place. Imagine an ape enclosure where the ape can't get out but the visitors can easily get in.
I think it’s because when the humans created the barrier first of all they didn’t really care who got in as long as nothing got out. Second I think the humans didn’t care if humans got in because if the monsters ever started to uprise and escape the humans could quickly stop them (side note there’s actually an old theory on HeartWings channel saying “The Barrier is a Lie” and it’s pretty compelling)
well, if you think about it, making a barrier one-sided would make the side you're protecting stronger. it makes sense that they would want it stronger.
Why do you assume that humans could choose the terms of the spell? It is a sealing spell with particular direction and particular power. If humans COULD make it undestroyable, they probably would
Not to mention, the barrier just had absurd strength. The humans didn't even KNOW it took 7 souls to break it; the monsters only found that out after experimentation.
It needs less (I think) but asgore said that they needed 7 souls cuz he was too afraid to move on in reality It's like.. 2 or 3. (Number isn't confirmed..)
@@benjooderso7765 If I remember correctly, one human soul (+ a monster soul) is enough to get a single monster through the barrier but not enough to completely shatter it.
In the game it's often explained that the barrier is very much magic. Things can go in but can't come out. Hence why frisk and Chara were able to fall in but not leave

@@narrativeless404 timeline still existed, what happened was that asriel was going to delete it all after defeating you as he said and had the souls of most of the underground. If you talk to nap he says he saw a light outside and knocked on his door trying to get in, but he closed his blinds and ignored it, then everyone knew the human name except him.
It is said by alphys after you beat mettaton , she says that "anything can pass through it but nothing can't exist" & need a monster soul & absorb it to exit
The barrier is a spell trapping the monsters inside the mountain. It’s not a physical gate, I’ve known this since I was like 8 and first played the game
Humans were afraid of what monsters could do if they were to absorb a human soul, but it was also said that a human could theoretically absorb a boss monsters soul and become equally as powerful. So maybe they wanted to prevent monsters from ever getting human souls but wanted to leave themselves the option to one day "harvest" monster souls for their power?
but humans cannot absorb monster soul. as soon as the monster dies its soul gets destroyed. the only way that could work is by killing either Toriel or Asgore, where the second option is semi impossible and the first is just cruel
@@romytch They have almost genocided and imprisoned an entire race. I dont think killing Toriel is to immoral for them. Also Im pretty sure that it was never said Toriel and Asgore were the only boss monsters.
@@tobiasbayer4866 yes they could've just killed Toriel, and absorb her soul. but to get out of underground they should go to New Home and try to kill Asgore (unless humans can fly). if he isnt a looser and for once tries to fight a human with incredible power, he will just absorb all 6 human souls and easily destroy you. and let's not forget Undyne, Mettaton and the skeleton brothers, who could kill you halfway through
weird theory. maybe the magician humans weren't exactly glad that the war happened. so they made the barrier like that and possibly sent children to the underground because they felt like it.

@@narrativeless404It's stated that one human soul is enougth for a monster to kill more humans and take they're souls to break the barrier. Chara hates humans. Some humans throwed Chara in the hole hoping Monsters would use her soul for taking more souls and braking the barrier. It wouldn't be 7 kids, but 1 kid was eougth and much easier to do, if moster wouldn't use it would be on them. So if any inteligent would want to free monsters without anyone noticing his part in this he would drag someone child or even they're own child to underground.
@@Darwidx Yeah, but Chara fell on accident. This is literally seen from the intro cutscene The kid shown in it is Chara, not Frisk Monsters weren't aggressive or angry at all. They didn't go for it. But Chara decided to sacrifice themselves and force them to take their Soul and attack Humans, but it failed. If any intelligent guy cared about freeing Monsters, that would be neutral run Frisk/Chara, as i'm very much sure Monsters were sealed so long ago that not only did Humans just lost magic, but knowledge of Monsters as well
The humans are known to be unable to use magic, did you really expect them to make a perfect MAGIC barrier? They're lucky to make a magic barrier at all
When has it ever been said that humans cant use magic? The very fact that they were able to create a magic barrier in the first place proves they can do that.

@tobiasbayer4866 A book in the Snowdin library explains that monsters are made of magic, while humans are "mostly made of water". Then goes on to explain that, while humans' physical forms are stronger, "they will never know the joy of expressing themselves through magic." Yet the opening cinematic and the glyphs in Waterfall both mention human sorcerers. I don't think this is a plot hole, I think it's another case of the faulty narrator (the books in Snowdin also speculate that human Souls lack compassion and love, because their physiology is different from monsters.) It could also mean humans eventually lost the ability to use magic, OR that humans lack innate magical ability themselves but can use spells or something
You need a power EQUIVALENT to 7 human souls not necessarily 7 human souls, at the end of the game the barrier is destroyed using 6 human souls + the soul of every monster, wich was stated to be equal to one human soul As for the "things can get in but not out" maybe that was just an oversight or something from the human magicians, we dont know how magic works in Undertale so maybe they didnt know about that when they made the barrier
I think it's a whole thing relating to human souls, Nothing can leave but human souls can probably travel in and out if their LV is high enough. which makes me think the original goal was for someone to travel in and kill all the monsters when they were strong enough, then exit with the amount of LV they've collected after. But instead eventually the plan was just forgotten and children ended up accidentally wandering through
To me, the barrier blocks also the way humans falls down. The barrier only blocks things from exiting. The barrier is made to nlock the monsters, bc humans were scaree of them
It's so that if humans think that monster's would be a threat they can sind humans in the underground to kill the monsters tho I don't think electric devices work because of how dince it is
Actualy, it's only possible to destroy the barrier with 7 human souls, but its possible too to pas throw it with only one. Toriel even says that Asgore could have just took the first soul, went to the surface and then get the other 6 but he didn't want to.

It's said in-game that anything can enter the barrier but only beings with a powerful soul can leave. I'm guessing the idea is that since it's a spell specifically made to keep people in, it has no effect on people who are already outside. Now that I think about it location based magic may just be inconvenient in general, in Deltarune it seems anyone can make a dark world but Ralsei says only someone with a powerful soul like Kris can seal them, similar to how someone with a powerful soul can get through the barrier. hmm...
I've got two theories. 1- They just can't fly that high/they'll miss thair friends. 2- The barrier *is* a one spot place, and the hole was a miscalculation.
FINALLY, someone brings this up! I've been asking this question for years! My main point is if they are just in a mountain, then why not just dig out an exit, assuming the barrier just seals off the exit and isn't a really dumb one-way dome.
Frisk and the other humans had strong souls as which mentioned by Flowey, is the ONLY thing that can come in and out of the barrier. It would be painfully difficult to climb back up, so they decided to go to the barrier to walk out. The other humans in town probably have weak souls while the eight others have strong ones.
After all, let’s assume that the trapping happened in 565 or 1565 over that kind of time, geographical distinctions change, and its possible the ceiling was complete at the time but overtime due to things like earthquake and erosion The hole that frisk fell from in the beginning opened
I have two theory's 1. The seven humans who created the barrier, created it to hide away the monsters so that humans could regain their lost strength come back and kill them all. 2. The humans intentionally made it 1 sided so that humans in the future could come down and free monsters in a time where humans wouldn't immediately kill them.
I think it's one sided because if a monster hid among the humans and was found after the barrier was made it would be easier to shove then in that way instead of having to destroy and remake it
My headcanon is that the barrier is sentient and since it was made to keep the monsters underground, it uses it's magic to weigh any monster who tries to come through the hole
