I suppose another way you could interpret the ending shot of Norah standing in content as the water rushes in well after she detonated the core is that Cthulhu has tricked her. It goes back to her monologue at the start of the film about not being able to distinguish dream from reality. Just before Norah begins her monologue at the end of the film, she stares at Cthulhu and it sees into her mind and perceives her plan. It locks her in a dream-like trance and she only _imagines_ executing her plan to detonate the core. This buys enough time for the integrity of the Roebuck to fail and she awakens from her trance as the water rushes in to kill her.

Finally got a chance to see "Underwater". Mr. H was on target. I really dug this movie! It really bothers me that it received so many bad reviews. I did not see it trying to be "Alien". I see it as being what it set out to be: A cool sci-fi/horror flick. And, I have to say, I really like Kristen Stewart's character. I have never seen her movies before, but I think she was great in this movie. She played a terrified woman in a horrible situation. She was constantly forcing herself to get passed the fear and do whatever thing she had to do, right there in front of her. She was totally "human". And those are my favorite heroes to watch. Sensitive, brave, smart and tough. A great "Survivor" character. That kid did a great job! I would see s sequel. I havent gotten a vibe like that from any other female leads since Sigourney played Ripley. And I liked the other characters a lot too. My only complaint would be with the creatures. Sometimes cgi effects portray creatures as moving too fast. It us common in these movies. Especially with larger creatures. I think they would have done better with a little more color and detail. The movie deserved better reviews and I would like to see Nora continue in this story.

Well, in the call of Cthulhu, Cthulhu does get rammed by a boat and is physically injured. Not to say that he was, in that instance, permanently killed, but to say that he is capable of being thwarted by enough physical power. Even if his body is destroyed, Cthulhu doesn't die. He sleeps. He dreams. In his house at Rylyeh, dead Cthulhu lies dreaming.

Just saw the movie earlier today and think it's one of the better creature feature/horror movies I've seen in a while. Interesting to hear about the Shepard as I was wondering why they would abandon their clothes and stuff in an old station, but, with it actually being a mobile structure that's essentially stuck out in the middle of nowhere, return trips for miscellaneous items seem less a priority than if it was a physical building they'd likely have forewarning will be abandoned. Really like how the scale of the creatures gradually increase as you go from the little "baby" one to the larger ones and start to overlook the clues that something even bigger is lurking until the moment of its reveal. Having the smaller creatures on the body of the larger immediately reminds me of Cloverfield, but I wouldn't be surprised if the concept dates back a lot further and really would like to see more films with this Cthulhu vibe.

She was great when reacting to a crisis, genuinely believable. It was the slower moments when she was trying to be relatable that I saw too much of the Kristen Stewart trope emerge, y'know? Like when taking charge of a situation amidst panic her emotional range goes all the way from 1 to 10 but when interacting with other characters her emotional range limits tops out at about a 5 making it really difficult to get invested in her character or anyone else's since the story unfolds mostly from her perspective. Luckily this is just a nitpick and on a whole it didn't change how much I enjoyed the movie, it just feels good to be able to finally put a finger on what specifically bothers me about some of Stewart's performances.

@MichaelPhillips-jw4bj
@MichaelPhillips-jw4bj 4 года назад
Yes! i argued this with full respect to his opinion which i highly value and this VERY cool director. This is a edited for past tense quote before i heard this interview '' I couldn't relate these monsters to the deep ones which feel much more cognitive and cerebral. These feel like monsters felt closer to our myths that many humans have wrote about under the sea since the actual dawn of humanity. Sorry if i sound harsh, Its actually interesting. i just personally feel like this more monster then lovecraft. Basically the plot is as close to Mira grants horror book rolling in deep+plus its sequel as it is to lovecraft. Imo maybe even more so. funny enough this same origin plot concept as pacific rim. Cthulhu is a god like monster. He personally traversed the stars his call can enter your dreams. There's also a physiological aspect to his horror but it stems from directly him not the environment or past trauma. I didn't feel that monster was on that level at all. Love craft wrote his stories mountains of madness, call of cthulhu, dunwich horror,shadow over innmouth etc in almost scientific accounts. There's normally a long build up hinting at the horror with evidence. the evidence brings the shocking horror at its implication This feels the different... p.s love craft fans should checkout horrorbabble on RU-vid. I listen to lovecraft readings to fall asleep every night'' Now hearing the interview my feelings have changed towards the ending plus a few things. I will support his work and buy a physical copy to give it another chance. Now that i have more context i'll enjoy it better. this should of been conveyed in the film a little but it basically the studio exects seem to have messed with his vision. I am slightly disappointed I couldn't see his vision fully. Maybe its a problem with me I got from the ending a boogey mama monster appears and she's blown up. All this ''its a cthulhu/ god and can't be killed ''i didn't get. I write this With great respect to this director for coming to the fans,mr H, and fellow fans

Part of the charm... well, horror of Lovecraft's stories stems in part from the aftermath. What I mean is, when the Protagonist or more like the survivor finally scapes from that horror or when the horror itself just pass on, it's like the moment after a natural (or is it preternatural 😉) catastrophe, there is victims, destruction, desolation and the uncanny feeling that it wasn't the end... I haven't seen the movie but it sounds promising, maybe I'll go to the movie theater this weekend and give it a shot. I'm so confused how people still debate if it's Cthulhu or not when there's literally a picture of Cthulhu hanging in Lucien's locker (1hour 5mins) along with other eldritch notes.

In the end it said there were only two survivors. So does that mean the other people who escaped in the pods in the beginning were killed I guess?
@chenry4fitness
@chenry4fitness 4 года назад
Space Dust I would draw that conclusion based of the 2 survived article. Additionally remember one of the pods had a beacon still operating but it was actually found below them when they first went out into the water. Couple that notion with the fact that Cthulhu sent his minions after the two pods in the end as if it was routine, catch and kill

I just finished this movie and have to say it was very enjoyable. I wasn't thrilled with the trailer, as I felt it showed a bit more than it should (sure, one brief creature sighting but still). But this movie impressed me to no end. The cast was great, the way they were dispatched was great... there is VERY little character focus here, but when the plot demands for a race against multiple clocks (the station collapsing and oxygen) that is easily forgiven. The direction was great with an amazing cinematography focus as well. Use of lighting was great. The lack of creature focus was great too as it lends itself to the classic Alien styling of not showing the thing for long periods until the end. The shock of Cthulu at the end was thrilling. I took one look and gasped. Unlike the more ambiguous (and less effective film) Altitude (which has its moments of Lovecraftian style), knowing this is Cthulu is a thrill. Sure it would be great to see someone like Deni Villnueve or Fincher take a stab at a 150 minute take on the Myhtos but this works perfectly.

What is that from?

@thereelvoice. 4 года назад
Alexander Meredith mentioned in Hebrew texts. Namely, the New testament as the angel of death and his name means destroyer. Not sure where this quote is from although it sounds similar to a verse in the Bible where it states the “locusts” from the abyss, under the command of Abaddon, will torture man for 5 months and they will beg for death and death will not find them.

Loved this movie! I rarely go to a theater these days but i had a good feeling about this one. Me and three friends went together and the first time we saw the monster (CTHULHU) looking down at Kristen's character we all said, "CTHULHU!!!" at the same time! Went back twice just to see that big beautiful face! Can't remember the name but there was a game that featured Cthulhu and since that I've been hoping for a "good" movie and it's finally here! Underwater is in my repeat list now!

emeraldo yeah... I wish they just kept it their own creations, not some borrowed creature, and SUCH a iconic creature. It could have been their own thing, their own creature, NOPE!!! Love the movie, great suspense, great thrills, great story, great setting, great characters, love the movie but then the director just holds up a HP Lovecraft book. I feel this is a last minute dropping the ball, the studios were breathing down his neck and he just plug&played Cthulhu... oof! This movie is so great then he just drag&drops in the Cthulhu mythos, not disappointed but wowee!

Just finally managed to watch this movie and it was fantastic. Almost feels like a throwback to 80s or 90s horror. Nice intro, the design (especially the diving suits) is amazing and all the characters are likeable. Judging by his filmography, William Eubanks has a lot of love for the sci-fi genre so I'm definitely going to follow what he does next.

"You can't kill Cthulu." Forgive me for being argumentative, but Lovecraft wrote his story at least a decade before the atomic bomb was invented. Also, I just read the short story last night at it mentioned the Norweigian sailor got away from squidboy by ramming the Alert into his head at full speed. If a collision with a boat can knock Cthulu back into dreaming, then a bloody nuclear explosion can at least mess him up.
