Been jamming this monster of a record for 24 years, and I'm never bored by it. Partly because no matter how much I learn about making electronic music, I can't fathom how this was created. And partly because it still sounds like some kind of imaginary future that sits just over the horizon that we can never quite seem to catch up to.
@@dawidp8805 the issue is music has become compartmentalised with genres, ie ambient music is ambient music, indie rock, indie pop is in its own niche, very little crossing over/ bleeding into other genres from today's acts Underworld started out as a funk/ electro rock band, the ghost of rock music (and its dynamics) exists within intelligent dance, and it works!
i got this back in 96 and this it's been more than, lets say, 25 years since last time i played /listen to it... forgot how good it is... this is cool AF
I listened to this on the day of its release in headphones in ‘Our Price’ records, Manchester. Stood mesmerised by the sound, the whole sound. Bought CD, took it home, listened to it again and that was it. Electronic dance music in the 90s..
I remember when I fell in love with electronic music in the early 90s and ppl would always tell me how it had no emotion to it. I can't imagine how anyone could listen to Underworld and not be overwhelmed with emotions. They were always ahead of their time and absolutely brilliant live.
Electronic music, done correctly, especially when it is Underworld (or maybe "The Orb" or "FSOL"), has just as much emotion/soul to it as Hendrix or Black Sabbath ever had.
thats the point about this music, its the machine of electronica with a human element trying to fight it. When the unfiltered vocals (lyrics unimportant) come out at the end with the piano symbolises the continuation of humanity
0:00 - Juanita, Part I 4:07 - Juanita, Part II 6:03 - Kiteless, Part I 8:40 - Kiteless, Part II 12:12 - To Dream of Love 15:17 - To Dream of Love, Ending
This song has so many moments. It is incredible. They synth on kiteless, the return of the dreamy piano and guitar that ties back to Juanita...then the poppy bassline 8:54...follow that as it fades as they bring in the other layers. Drops at 10:33, then returns 10:47 but as hi hats or whatever they are called. still following the same sequence. piano at 11:32 that ties it all together. There might not be a more complex and satisfying electronic song in the history of electronic music.
I love how the song actually gears up at 2:15 (drums), and then its like if this were a massive ritual to awaken the spirits, and they suddenly come alive at 3:40, and then it's a deep, deep, deep wormhole that not even the final sequence of 2001: A Space Odyssey can equate.
Trainspotting first led me to explore Underworld back in the day, but this was the track which made me fall in love. The three movements work flawlessly together, and truly take the listener on a trip through a strange place-- to me, the very definition of 'underworld'.
Exactly the same for me! Well, for me it was actually the live version of this track, which I kind of still prefer... the crowd noises make it feel a bit more dynamic, more alive.

12:12 -- It's summer break 1997. Mom was away. Managed to grab a 24 case of beer, and we partied listless, in that humid summer air. Teenaged optimism. Filled with potential. This. This.
used to be my commute song. I would see if I could get home before it ended. sometimes I just kept driving and driving and driving ... thank you Scott for introducing me to Underworld.
In 1996, I was a college student in southern Ohio and would travel back up to my home in northern Ohio from time to time. It's a trip that takes four hours. Between this and Banstyle... would just need to listen to each eight times and I was home!
In ‘06 I started making the drive from Athens to Cleveland and back again, too many times to count! Always had impactful music journeys during those trips. Underworld made up a large amount of them!
I seriously don't know what they have been on when this was created... it's like nothing I've ever heard in my life. Not a case of "ahead of its time", but more like "not of this world".
In the 90's living in Nashville. I weekly went to a club called "The Underground on 2nd Ave to receive my weekend dose of trans, rave and techno. There was a club in memphis I went to with a live DJ for the same thing but can't remember the name of It. That's where I came to know the name "Darren Emerson". Owned all the Psychotrance CD's. Only 3 up to then and tons of other CDs. Moved to a small town in Ala called Russellville for work. Absolutely nothing to do there. I was lonely. I went to a CD store to get some music to listen to on my way to visit my friends in Memphis for a weekend. And this is the CD I bought. I remember pulling over just to listen to this first song all over again without any distractions. It totally wowed me. 25+ years later this album still rocks
back when they were touring for Beaucoup Fish I met them at the outside of the Showbox in Seattle. I told Karl Hyde that this was my favorite Underwold song and he said it was about a girl that worked at Tomato. pretty cool.
Bought this at the time - loved it but then it got a little left behind. Having a electronic nostalgia trip at mo - Prodigy, Chemical Bros, Underworld.... great!
My penultimate gig, Underworld Wembley Arena December 2019, ridiculously long queues to get in because of security, by the time we got in to the hall all the good stuff was just beginning to course through my veins, Underworld had just come on to the stage and were playing this. Boom! What a night.
Pauljones620@gmail.com Disclosure? You can not compare Underworld with Disclosure that’s like chalk and cheese!! There’s nothing like Underworld and this is the album that got me first hooked.
the synths have changed and most affordable stuff is software instead of hardware based. the stock sounds that exist now are mostly rubbish. and the real disposable income since the 90s is down about 20% which means people have 20% less to spend on stuff like hardware and other musical items. most people are scraping by. and the drugs
I must admit I started liking this song in the wrong time in my life. Now when I want to listen to it I remember all the misery! The lyrics are talking to one another. The lights are spinning in wheels radiating a gradient of silver in the pitch black veil.
Played this just cause I love "Pearls Girl". Forgot how amazing all the other tracks are!!! Truly a stand out album of the era! Very few artists have the ability to verbally spout this much nonsense, that yet means so much to me!
Definately one of their best albums! What a great techno sound they always produce!! And who gives a f@ck about lyrics??!!! It flows in the in track, the music says it all!! What if Underworld and Orbital made a baby? Hmmmmm............
Exactly. Oh the memories. I bought this the day it came out and subjected everyone I know to it's brilliance. Could and still can listen to it straight and sober, mad with it, coming up, coming down, whatever. Sensational tuneage. Will always have a special place in my heart.
Interesting question. For me, it's a slightly strange one - it just reminds me of the times in the past when I have listened to *this track*. It doesn't particularly recall anything external, which isn't a criticism - I guess it's just that whenever I did, and do, listen to it, I get so swept up in that it takes over completely. It's certainly the best thing Underworld ever recorded, and a strong contender for the best piece of dance/electronic music of the 1990s. The word masterpiece was invented for J/K/TDoL.
@@jonathanchater6105 Interesting! Never listened to it that way before. Not convinced that's what he's saying, but it's a nice thing to bear in mind while listening.
