The sweetest, most tragic couple in the series. Sadly, it could not end well. Together, they could never stay in, or return to, their countries, even after the war. In Switzerland? His parents, of whom he speaks fondly, would have their lives destroyed by the Nazis (Kurt is German but not a Nazi) because their son deserted. We never learn if Lorraine second-guessed her reasons, unexplained, for leaving Kurt in the lurch at the last moment. And Kurt’s murder, like so many events in this series, is complex. He wants to die. She badly wants to nurse him back to health. But there is no way to sustain the secrecy of his recovery. We watch, hoping for a miracle. So sad. At least Kurt gets to see his daughter.

@@dimuthunawines, it is about WW2. France was invaded and partially occupied by the Germans. Part of France remained free, that is, not under the direct control of the Germans, although it was controlled by French citizens sympathetic to the Nazi cause, or who at least believed they and their people were safe as long as they cooperated fully with the Nazis. Lucienne is a schoolteacher in “Free” (Vichy) France. Kurt is a conscripted Sergeant in the German Army who loves Lucienne most tenderly. Watch the series. It is unforgettable.
