Unearthing Oregon History-A Shirt is Worth a Thousand Words

In a new video for the “Unearthing Oregon History” series on Dear Oregon, historical archaeologist Chelsea Rose highlights a worker’s shirt held in OHS’s museum collection that is thought to have belonged to a Chinese railroad laborer. Rose examines the shirt and describes how this ordinary piece of clothing helps document Chinese history in the state and offers up-close, personal connections to the past. This effort is part of the larger Oregon Chinese Diaspora Project (OCDP), a grassroots multi-agency collaboration focused on education and research about early Chinese Oregonians. Rose is a research archaeologist at Southern Oregon University who focuses on the settlement and development of the American West and has worked with state and federal agencies to create a research partnership that focuses on Oregon’s Chinese migrant history.
