I just realized this was my first time tasting a rum from Thailand! And I really enjoyed it! You've probably seen some other tastings of Shakara 12-year floating around on the internet because La Maison & Velier just released this bottling, so I tried to keep my video short and completely unedited.
Shakara 12-year-old Thai Rum
- 45.7% ABV
- made by 1 distillery in the central providence of Nakhon Pathom
- Thai molasses
- column distilled
- aged 12 years (tropically) in ex-bourbon
- no sugar or color added

Plz do a video comparing Rumfire vs Rivers Royale Grenadian Rum, esp how they both manage to get such unique flavors from their respective production processes. Tnx.

Ooh ok! Interesting comparison as they're pretty different from one another (molasses vs cane juice)! Have you tried both of them?

Can't say that I have tried Thai rum, but during my time in Thailand I found Thai whiskey to be awesome in general! They were all generally smooth and easy to drink and generally my favorite whiskeys are Japanese whiskeys such as Suntory, so I would always recommend to people going there to give Thai whiskey a try.

I have had mine open for about three weeks now. it's not a bad rum at all, however I wanted more from it. I don't think the proof hinders it, but I would love this at 50%. It had a solid mid and back palate. At 50$ I can recommend it to enthusiasts, and the beginner alike. I am hoping to see the new Rhum JM soon, are you planning on getting those.

Are you talking about the Rhum J.M. Atelier series? I honestly haven't really thought about it... they're advertised as cocktail rums, which doesn't excite me too much hahaha

Try The Phraya thai rum too! i tasted 3 different from that distillery, all good

Looking forward to this on my next trip to Thailand.. lived there for 5 years and my drink of choice was Sang Som rum.. as I write this now sitting in the philippines I miss it. The popular rum here is Tanduy as a Canadians' best descriptive would be Moose piss. But I must say some of the best rum I've ever had here in ph or anywhere is Zabana Dark Rum best part it is only $1.25 for 700ml (24oz) but hard to find.

Wow, I can't believe how cheap Zabana rum is! Have you had any of their other expressions? Or is the 8-year the best?

@RobynSmithPhD unfortunately the 8 year is the only one I've had chance to pick up. Saying that would love to try the cherry cask but have yet to see it here.. my pricing was wrong on the 8 year. It is 2 dollars or 130Php it still very cheap.. I'm not much of a expert i just know what I like. At that price I'm sure it's full of flavoring at bottling. The ABV is 38% it's a filipino thing. Most of the local spirits are lower then 40% think it is a tax thing the government greatly increases the tax at 40 and above.

@@asiasmells71 I bet the legal minimum for spirits is 38% ABV then... each country has its own legal minimum and most spirits are bottled at that ABV. For example, the legal min. in the US is 40% ABV, which is why most spirits made here are at 40% ABV. It's not necessarily a tax thing (although it can be), but it's more so chosen because a distillery can maximize the amount of bottles they produce when they bottle at the legal minimum.

@RobynSmithPhD I totally agree that's the case in most places such as Canada where I come from min. 40% there too. But Emperador sells Brandy here on every corner 1 letter bottles at 4 bucks and they are at 27% and then you have Fundador the competition selling at 10 bucks 1L. And it's 23%.. I've seen many YT videos of people drinking filipino spirits and saying how strong they are.. I have to laugh as I've drank them all myself as well.. they are most time sub 30% abv they are strong cuz they taste like crap.. but I must say that this Zabana Rum is on the higher end at 38% taste awasome!!!! And still cheap as a bottle of coke.. would never be ashamed to bring a bottle of it to a party to share.
