Interesting conversation. The London skyline had changed quite radically through the turn of the century with many modernist buildings. That's unlikely to happen again.

Q: The drive for housing is likely to create a three-tier planning system. Environmentalists counter the drive with a call for 1/3 of land to be 'rewarded'. That could leave normal planning rules with only one third left in their jurisdiction. So where might the Historic Environment fit into that segmented model? Not so much a 'Garden City Movement' as "Garden Countryside". Do we need Julian Barnes' "England, England" to be built on the Isle-of-White, after all? Or, is a single, unified approach to planning better? Is heritage a theme park or a component of good development, as you hint at with Milton Keynes?

You'd be amazed how much "architecture" is in fact town "planning". Town planners are the most ideologically driven people I know. They are trammelled into following state adopted goals and predetermined outcomes with zero understanding of the human condition.

There will probably be another few years of above average temperatures and moisture. In January of 2022 an undersea volcano pushed unimaginable amounts of water vapor high into the atmosphere. It will take several years for that excess water to get wrung out of the sky. Folks seem to have a very short memory for things which explain their fears.
