Awww! Must be so cute!! I have a Robin friend who comes back every year, except for last year when all that smoke came down from Canada wild fires. He/she? Takes baths in the bird bath just 10 feet away from me and listens when I talk, even sometimes it gets closer than that. It had been a fledgling in our yard and grew comfortable with me, they say birds remember faces and people.

I have a hummingbird who made 2 nests under our awning (1 on the large wooden dream chaser) near our sliding door. We keep her and her eggs/chics protected. She has a special calling when there's an intruder like a squirrel or cat. She is on her 3rd brood.

The circle of life. Hope the duck can still set another nest this year. I felt the same way a few years ago when the squirrels got into a robin’s nest in our tree. 😢 Your garden looks amazing again this year. Our city is on level 4 (highest) water restrictions this week so I’m saving whatever grey water I can to hopefully get them through until the problem is fixed. The neighborhood squirrel keeps digging up some of the plants. Mischievous little so and so. Oh well covering them up wherever I can and hoping for the best. ❤❤❤for Tuck. I wish I could have a little guardian in my garden like him. Give him a little ear scratch for me and tell him he’s a good boy.

We had lots of trouble with squirrels and chipmunks digging up my garden dislodging all of my plants. Once we started trapping we are able to keep down the damage. Now it is raccoons who come out at night. Haven’t decided what to do about them yet. My garden-is too small to forfeit to animals. Thing is a neighbor feeds them in her garage and lets her cats roam all night!

@@NatureScapesStudioBeing a handy human, I am making raised bed cages similar to what James has used and keep other areas planted with wildlife food. The neighbor's adopted cats have been sleeping in 100 degree heat in another partly shady, uncovered raised bed and I've started leaving water out for them. We have tomatoes in quantity there for the first time ever, probably in great part due to them relieving pest (i.e. others who eat what we eat lol) pressure and tulle over the fruits. It's rough out there and what comes around goes around. I do my best to be kind. After all, "Do unto others as you would have others do unto you."

The diversity in your garden is amazing. I love how you call them "a form of life"- I was originally from Jersey too and called them something else. Probably a raccoon got at the eggs. The garden seems pretty intact, so the fencing must be keeping out deer and ground hogs- its really difficult to keep out a determined raccoon- probably more than one. I love your optimism and perspective- it can be really frustrating dealing with these tragedies, but it's all part of the gardening discipline. Move forward, concentrate on your successes, learn from your mistakes and don't take nature too personally.

Being a gardener and as the garden grows. Everyone really does create a working eco system. Especially when you plant to invite the good bugs and bees. Year by year it just gets better. With the soil improvements, trees, and many different plants. Remeber the poem: Mary, Mary quite contrary How does your garden grow? The next line should be. Year after year with alot of work. 🤣. But it’s all worth it.
