According to Wikipedia, the open encyclopedia, Muong Lay town was formerly known as Lai Chau town and was the provincial capital of the former Lai Chau province in the period 1962-1992. Muong Lay town is located in the north of Dien Bien province, 103 km north of Dien Bien Phu city, 576 km northwest of Hanoi capital center, geographical location:
- To the north, it borders Nam Nhon district and Sin Ho district in Lai Chau province across the Da river.
- The remaining sides are bordered by Muong Cha district.
Muong Lay town has an area of 114.03 km², population in 2019 is 11,162 people, population density reaches 98 people/km². Muong Lay is the town with the lowest population and also the town with the smallest number of wards and communes in Vietnam today.
Muong Lay town is located in a long, narrow valley, where the Da River, Nam Na River and Nam Lay River intersect. The town's land is distributed along the banks of Nam Lay stream, now a part of Son La hydropower reservoir. Currently, most of the lowlands of Muong Lay town are located under the Son La hydropower reservoir. The lake has an area of about 50 km² and extends for tens of km...
The town is the end point of Highway 6 from Hanoi through Hoa Binh, Moc Chau, Son La, Tuan Giao.
It is the midpoint of Highway 12 connecting Dien Bien Phu city and Lai Chau city with a length of about 200 km.
In addition, this is also the starting place of the road to Muong Te district. This road has been upgraded to avoid the Son La hydropower reservoir and is the way to Lai Chau hydropower project, the third hydroelectric step on the Da river with a capacity of 1,200 MW. After the Son La hydropower reservoir, many permanent concrete bridges were built, connecting the areas of the town together.
