Judy Winslow is almost a direct result of the Chuck Cunningham syndrome. "Family Matters" had a lot of the same producers of "Happy Days" and it almost followed as many tropes as that show had, right down to the "unintentional main character syndrome" as I call it. The Fonz, Steve Urkel... characters that were introduced as wacky side characters but ended up overtaking the show.
I recalled that during the show's introduction, Jamie Foxworth was shown, but wasn't appearing in anymore episodes. I thought she was let go a long time, I guess those behind the scene were trying to keep it a secret as long as they can.
@@jonathanbynoe4375while trying to find ways of giving her storylines…they could have done a scholarship to a prep school and only featured her in holiday specials and vacation stories but nope!
Jamie's mother was upset that Jamie wasn't getting as much attention and threatened to pull her from her contract. The producers decided to let her go as her part was far too small at that point. Jamie grew up and became a porn actress
Very true. Chuck was never a main character and was mostly there to add flavor to the show, not be a plot driver. Judy in season 1 of FM was a main character who wasn't replaced by Steve, but Little Richie. No real need for another young child. Funny enough Rachel ends up leaving because the show becomes less about the adults and more about Steve.
Oh yeah, I forgot about him until you mentioned it. Guess he decided he'd rather "date" that hot blond girl in step by step instead of hanging around Eric lol. At least I think I remember them having a thing on step by step?
They talk about that on pod.Meets world a lot with minkus and mis attorney. They believe that Jason was just too good for that role. But he was a born sick on matter. He was overshadowing eric
Chuck had a falling out with his family and left home to join the millitary. After coming back from the war he changed his name to Red Forman and started his own new family.
Peter Griffin: "Let us pause to reflect on the sacred mystery of Richie's elder brother Chuck, who ascended the stairs with his basketball in Season One and never came down again."
I don’t know which is worse. Adding a young kid because they are running out of ideas, or getting rid of a character because they’re running out of ideas.
I believe the episodes with Tori were actually filmed last. Season 4 was already done filming but the network ordered 10 additional episodes. There was some issue with Tiffany Thiessan and Elizabeth Berkleys contracts which why they weren't in those episodes and were replaced by Tori instead. The Tori episodes were just placed in the middle of season 4 as filler.
@@drunclecookie216 Correct! In fact the Tori episodes never explain what happened to Jessie and Kelly either. In the short lived, but very good Saved by the Bell "requel" series on Peacock, there is a scene during Season 2 where Zack talks about Tori to Kelly and Kelly asks who Tori is and Zack is surprised Kelly doesn't remember her.
@drunclecookie216 I heard Tiffani was hard to work with and they didn't want to bring her back. I never heard anything about why they didn't bring Elizabeth back, don't think she showed up again until the most recent spin off, I think she was in the episode where they discussed memories of Screech, so I guess she didn't want to come back.
@GrimmShadowsII No, NBC ordered 10 more episodes after the initial episodes were filmed for the final season. Tiffani and Elizabeth both had other projects starting and their contracts were finished, so they couldn't come back due to scheduling. Tiffani ended up coming back for Saved by the Bell the College Years after the pilot was filmed. When that was canceled most of the cast reunited for the Wedding in Vegas tv movie... with Elizabeth making a cameo at the end with Belding and Mike (from College Years) during the wedding scene. Elizabeth and Mario Lopez were both in thethe "requel" Series as regulars... Mark-Paul and Tiffani made a few appearances during season 1 and then in season 2 they were basically regulars, Lark showed up in episode where they remembered Screech and prior to that on a Zoom style call.
@@DapperManDan I never watched the "requel" series so I didn't know everyone who was on the show and it's been years since I've seen wedding in Vegas so I don't remember it too well. I did know Tiffiani came back for the college years but that could have been pressure from fans or other people.
Richie from Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers. He was introduced in season two as a love interest to the Yellow Ranger Trini and possibly being the new White Ranger, but that was just to throw people off the fact they were bringing former Green Ranger Tommy back. After Tommy "redebuted" and Trini left the team, Richie just dropped off the face of Angel Groove, never to be heard from again
Oh yeah, I remember that. The last time Richie was seen was wehen he got his Yellow belt in Karate and he did a spin kick, knocking that cake out of Ernie's hands and the cake landing on Bulk and Skull. Also there was Zack's counsin, Curtis who disappeared.
Just like Tommy's long lost indian brother. A red herring for who the Gold Ranger was. Along with Billy, though I'm sure poor David Yost wanted out of that show too much to pull the ol' surprise repowering. Speaking of the Gold Ranger, before it became VR Troopers, it was going to be called Cybertron and Jason David Frank was going to be the main character, only for him to instead become the White Ranger on PR. Brad Hawkins, who did go on to star in VR Troopers, was the morphed voice actor for the Gold Ranger.
@@BaconMinion Iirc, David Yost left rather suddenly, so that decision was probably unrelated. That's why he's 'speechless' in his final appearance: It's file footage as he literally quit between episodes, allegedly over Saban's weird obsession with his sexuality.
One of my favorite 90's shows is "Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman"... And that show had at least 3 characters that just disappear from the show throughout it's 6 seasons.
The "Soap Opera Announcer " in that episode of "That 70s Show" was a call back to the 1977-81 show "Soap" a sitcom that was a "mock soap opera," its opening flashback/next episode bumpers were a Rod Roddy voice-over who reprised that role in that '70s Show ending, which also included a cameo of "Chuck and Bob" from "Soap."
Originally, the episode was written to be that Jessie developed an addiction to speed/amphetamines, but the network thought that was too "adult," so they changed it to a caffeine pill "addiction," instead.
@@elementalargon7597 They definitely shouldn’t have changed it bc it was a real problem for teens to get on drugs. I get it bc it was on television but it made the episode so cringy.
Lee Norris (Minkus on Boy Meets World) survived another show that underwent a reboot where characters disappeared. "The Torkelsons" ran in 1991-92 and was about a single mother and her brood of kids. Retooled in 1993 under the name "Almost Home", it featured a thinned out family. Gone were Aaron Metchick as Steven Floyd Torkelson and Anna Slotky as Ruth Ann Torkeson. No explanation was given for their disappearance.
The thing is that show had the same producers as boy meets world. 2 other actors who guest stared on boy meets world were leads on that show. I believe it was because Daniel fisher topagna got the lead so there was no room for him. And Mr turner character as well. They made the right decision. He returns in season 5 for a guest appearance
At least Minkus’s explanation was plausible. He was in different classes as a different part of the school and I guess with big schools even though it was a joke you don’t always see each other. But at least they brought him back and I’m really glad that he was a semi main character and his son was the main character on girl meets world. The good thing about Girl meets world is that they referenced a lot of characters disappearing.
@@mulletking I don't know where the "Lee Norris becoming a woman" rumor started but it isn't even close to true. He is married with at least one kid. Also he did nine seasons of One Tree Hill and guest starred on Dawson Creek while in college before Girl Meets World.
In King of Queens three characters got written out of the show, Carries sister after a few episodes, Doug's friend Richie and sister got written out after the paintball episode.
@@TimeVextorX Some wouldn't. It is a predatory industry for sure but luckily OnlyFans has helped turn a lot of those women into independent creators who are properly compensated and allowed artistic freedom away from the predatory part of the industry.
You forgot Tori on Saved by the Bell. Granted, her character is known to have been created after the other girls opted not to renew their contracts, but still.
I think he's having some specific thing about this show starting in the 90s and that show started in the 80s. Also you guys remember the show hey dude that was another one where they had a character that just was like replaced. Remember Ted on the show? Didn't they replace him later with some goofy guy? And then I don't even know if I even mentioned that again.
@@McCucumber I well remember when they replaced Ted on Hey Dude. With a fellow named Jake. Remember Salute Your Shorts? They replaced one of them with a fellow named Pinsky in the second season. He bribed Ugg with a log of salami, ha.
Harley returns in one episode of Boy Meets World and him and Griff were going to fight. Also in the episode Frankie and Joey told Griff and Harley that they're done being their lackies. Harley does return in Girl Meets World. He became head janitor at a middle school Corey teaches at.
what I never understood is that Fez was 16 give or take... So if Tina Pinciotti was 14... that isn't really a big deal. It isn't unheard of for a senior to date a freshman... It almost feels like Laura was talking to Wilmer (who was 18)... rather than Donna talking to Fez. Given the actress was actually just 14.
Seven was affected by both "The Cousin Oliver Syndrome" where producers add a child to the cast in later seasons to garner viewers. And the Chuck Cunningham syndrome
Not a 90s show but I remember in Grounded for life had the youngest son Henry just disappear on the final season Also never watched Girl meets World but glad to see Mr Turner didn't die after that accident
Aunt Rachel also disappeared from Family Matters. In Full House, Danny's fiance disappeared. They got engaged at Disney Land and then she was never seen again. Step by Step's first season had Penny and Peggy who both disappeared.
Cory from That's So Raven was another sibling who disappeared without a trace. After the spin-off Cory In the House ended, Cory was never seen or mentioned again in Raven's Home.
She lied about her age to get the job, but it was eventually figured out, they should never have showed them actually kissing/making out, but rather alluded to it or faked it. That was in fact her first kiss on set and in real life. There needs to be more protection for actors under 21. They also need to stop acting like all teens do more than they do. 20% of 20-year-olds still have not yet experienced their first kiss, it shouldn’t be forced on stage. According to Planned Parenthood, those who seek their services do not use their virginity until nearly 18, that’s among those who seek Planned Parenthood services, there are far more teens who have no reason for going there. Let people keep their innocence and film shouldn’t Force it on their actors or the idea of it on their viewers. Fewer than 1% of couples who lose their virginity after marriage divorce or have any concerns of being cheated on. There’s a reason why historically staying abstinent as long as possible is the absolute best that can be done for an individuals, physical, spiritual, emotional, and mental health. It was wrong that they had her kissing adults while she was a child. It’s also under illegal duress when a person feels threatened, forced, or just fears losing their job.
I don't hear it a lot. But, Michael J Fox isn't the only actor, from that show, to be diagnosed with Parkinson's. Victoria Dillard (Janelle) is also living with the disease.
To be fair, a friend like in Fresh Prince isn’t the same thing as a family member just never existing friends leave all the time. Sometimes people aren’t important anymore and friends move on a bit different than people not having a little sister or brother anymore.
Step by Step has a few characters that disappeared. Brandon who was the youngest lambert kid was not cast for season 7. Carol’s mom and sister who were regulars in season 1 and disappeared entirely in season 2. Jean-Luc who was Lily’s nanny in season 6 disappears. You also missed Rachel on Family Matters. She was absent in season 5, had a recurring role in season 6, absent from seasons 7-8 and had a guest appearance in season 9
I had Jill’s friend on this list, but when researching there were many mentions that in the show it’s stated that she moved to California with a boyfriend, but I can’t confirm that. Al’s brother I didn’t know at all, I’ll look into it.
It was Carol’s mother and sister that did not return season 2 onwards. Also Brendon left after season 6. Jean-Luc also left after season 6 as well (he was a regular only for season 6). The character Cody was also absent for all of season 6 but did have some guest appearances in season 7. Step by Step also did the trope where kids are aged a few years. If I recall Lily was an infant in season 5 and then suddenly like 5 or 6 for season 6.
Yeah, they were not long for this world. I think by the halfway point of season 1 they were gone. Writers probably thought they weren't necessary and Cody was comic relief for most of the series.
That was a great show but went through more than one recast. One of the Jonas brothers played the father of her Kristen's child for an episode before being recast. Eventually the son was recast as well after the pandemic because they wanted him a bit older. The middle sister, "Mandy" was also recast after the show changed networks.
There were many characters from Roseanne that were written off without any explanations. There was Bonnie who she worked with in the coffee shop but once the coffee shop close, she was never mentioned her on the show again. Dan’s friend Ziggy, was on a couple of episodes, Who talked Dan into opening up the bike shop he was never mentioned. Then her friend Crystal, who was a recurring character for the first four years but after her character had her second child, she was never on, except for the one episode where Dan was dealing with his mother being put in a mental hospital.
Ziggy actually was mentioned: he fled town once they were staring, forcing Dan to run the place alone. he gave Dan half of the business and his savings to tide things over until Dan could make ends meet
@@mattm7798 she hired friends and people who she liked but didn’t care if they stayed or not after they couldn’t find plots or storylines for them…it’s a miracle Crystal ended up being around at times but she was put in a decent position with her marrying Dan’s dad and having a baby
Referencing Family Matters again, since you had brought Tyrique's disappearance on FPOBA, I just remembered that Eddie and Waldo were friends with that other young black man in a few seasons, who just seemed to disappear.
Weasel, yeah he was friends with Eddie and Waldo for a couple seasons. Waldo also was first introduced as a friend of Willy Fuffner, Steve's antagonist, not Eddie's friend.
You forget Shawn’s first older brother that Cory learns about season 3 episode 7, not to mention Frankie and Joey disappear from Boy Meets World. Otherwise, good job and very interesting!
That "soap opera announcer" in that 70's show is rod roddy the narrator for the show called "soap" that came out at the end of the '70's. They ended each episode of "soap" exactly how he sounded in the snippet. I recognized his voice right away.
I find it ironic that Happy Days spawned not only the "Chuck Cunningham syndrome", but a little saying called jumping the shark. It is how TV shows, and some times real life situations, know they've gone on too long and it's time to go. Don't get me wrong, Happy Days is one of my personal favorites from my teen years and I cherish it. But the fonz jumped a shark...really? It was the end of an era. 😊
Other disappearing characters on Saved by the Bell included Tori and Max. Tori replaced Jessie and Kelly in the final season, then she disappeared midway through without explanation, and Jessie and Kelly reappeared as if they never left. Max was the owner of The Max (hence the name), and he was played by magician and comedian Ed Alonzo. He’d do magic tricks for the kids when he brought over their food. I think he was only on the first season, then he disappeared. There’s also Sarah, Tamera’s best friend in the first two seasons of Sister Sister played by Brittany Murphy. She disappeared without explanation. Thinking about it, so did Roger, and that was more surprising as he was part of the main cast. They brought him back as a guest in a couple of later episodes, but they never explained why he disappeared in the first place. It was likely because Marques Houston was busy with his music career, plus Tia and Tamera had boyfriends and went to college, so they probably didn’t know what to do with Roger’s character. The other disappearing character that comes to mind is Oliver from The Golden Palace (the spin-off/sequel to The Golden Girls). He was the foster child of Don Cheadle’s character, and he disappeared for a few episodes midway through the series. They eventually brought him back for one episode, and wrote in a storyline where his mom got clean and he went to live with her, but they never explained his previous disappearance. I’m wondering if the episodes aired in a different order to how they were filmed.
This is probably unrelated but there was a VERY dramatic Family Matters episode where an older man came claiming he was Harriet and Rachel's father. Harriet had a hard time accepting his apology but ultimately did and comsidering how serious it was, youd think you'd see him more. But no, he was never spoken of again. I dunno maybe he was a jerk and left the family again and it was all taken care of during the Winslow's "off-camera" lives. 😂🤣
Well it was a situation of she did the disappear upstairs and was gone for a couple of years and then came back as she was recast. I call it the soap opera reduction as it was done all the time by the soaps back then
She was gone for like a season and came back recast, commenting it was the longest time-out she'd ever had. In Girl Meets World they brought her back for the final episode. Both actresses, with everyone just pretending it was perfectly normal Cory had two sisters called Morgan. 😆
Wow so many good shows in the 90s/early 2000s. Besides these shows I remember Hercules, the lost world, Buffy the Vamp., Angel, Wayans Brothers, Dawsons Creek, Smallville, Roswell, Sister Sister, X Files, Bernie Mac, Clueless etc.
Happy days 30th anniversary. Really wish he acted upset, they asked where he's been all that time, and he said he went to his room and the door got stuck. He's been yelling for help, stuck in his room all that time.
I don't think Minkus and Turner should be on this list because they explain what happened to them, they were in a different part of the school than the main characters. When I went to high school I knew people in the school that I didnt see on a daily basis.
How do you even post this and leave out the most notable one in history. Dr. Drake Ramoray I know he didn't disappear but was just forcibly exiled on camera. Still cracks me up.
i like to think that Chuck simply went off to the military, found love, and moved on leaving his family behind as Fonzi was doing the job Richie refused to let him do… as for the Judy situation…it upset me that they ignored her and to a lesser extent her cousin Richie in favor of focusing on Laura when they could easily find ways of getting her as a focus to actually make Urkel’s being around them make more sense: tutoring her? mentoring her in science? just helping her with boys etc.
Selby from the first half of the first season of Mad About You. He was Paul's best friend but then disappeared. I seem to recall him being mentioned much later which might have been around the time the show went into syndication.
From what I remember reading in an old TV Guide or online article then , the producers of Spin City dumped a few characters suddenly when Fox left. Because they wanted to give Sheen's character TV time to grow quick.
I read an interview a long time ago with Michelle Beaudoin, who played Jennie on Sabrina, where she said that the reason her character was cut was because "they were looking for a more ethnic friend for Sabrina," as she was told. She then sarcastically alludes to the fact that Sabrina's next friend, Valerie, was white. Funny enough, a few years ago, Melissa Joan Hart said on her podcast that one of the reasons she herself had a hard time finding work after Sabrina was that "they were always looking for someone more ethnic."
@@EddieHenderson92 At the time, family sitcoms were just too common and Family Matters was getting lost in the shuffle. It's too bad because re-watching that Urkel-less first season it is actually really nice and far more enjoyable than Full House (the two shows shared a very similar premise of extended family living together under one roof). Urkel IS funny those first few seasons. My kids love him! "Did I do that??" But I can't get past season 5. It's too much. Aunt Rachel left the show around then and Grandmother Winslow only had occasional guest appearances. It wasn't about the family anymore and the situations were getting way too silly.
Also in Boy Meets World there is what my friends and I call the lunchroom table of deth where in the first few epsodes of the show Cory and Shawn is eating lunch with a diffrent "friend" everytime until it was just the two of them.
In Family Matters there was a funny guy called Weasel who would appear with Waldo and they were a funny pair, later he just disappears without explanation
It makes sense most of these would fall into: character having little too do, overall cast budget (especially if more popular or interesting character are developed), behind the scene conflicts, actors wanting to move on either to other project or leave acting (probably more an issue for child or teen actors), concept was either poorly thought out or executed.
With Xena, Taurus still has an easy explanation that would also fit the universe well...he's an older half-brother, his mother probably died along the way and would add more of a reason for him wanting to avenge their younger brother
I totally forgot about 7 until you mentioned him in this video. A completely unwanted character in this otherwise awesome series. The milk carton and memory vanishing bits were classic.
The point of the series where it lost me was when Peggy and Marci was pregnant and due to real life miscarriage they wrote out that whole plot and that season was a "dream"
You definitely missed Megan from Boy Meets World. In the credits for the first season, she disappeared for 3 or 4 seasons until a new actress replaced her as a recurring. The closest thing to an explanation is that she was in time out a long time.
@@gmt921 Yeah, IIRC Lily Nicksay, the actress, did not like acting and so they just kind of wrote her out. Which is a shame because she was one of the best and funniest parts of season 1: "They just shot the neighbor!!!!"
I remember watching a reunion special for Happy Days many years ago. During the special, cast members were sitting on a stage talking, when suddenly there was this loud bang. Tom Bosley quipped "Chuck, is that you?" Cracked me up.
The Torkelsons lost a couple of kids when it got rebranded to Almost Home. Step by Step - Brendan Lambert Saved by the Bell - Kelly's sister Nicki Kapowski (2nd season). Character named Tori in the fourth season. Wings - Budd Bronski Seinfeld - Claire from the pilot. She was supposedly intended to be a recurring character. Star Trek The Next Generation - There were a few characters who were introduced and seemed as if they were going to have multiple episodes (more than two) but never did. Ashley Judd and Lycia Naff were two actresses who were in two episodes (each), with a noticeable presence, only to disappear. (Judd played Robin Lefler, Wesley's love interest, Naff played Sonya Gomez, engineer.) To be fair, Naff appeared in episodes that aired in 1989, but the point is that there were several characters introduced who appeared in more than one episode but disappeared without a reason.
An honorable mention for saved by the bell os the tori paradox when tori appeared jesse and Kelly disappeared but then tori disappeared and kelly and Jesse returned and in the tori episodes they never even mention Jesse or Kelly ever
I think what happened was they filmed the graduation episode before the Tori episodes, so the Tori episodes are the last filmed, but not the last chronogically...tho I could be wrong.
@@mattm7798 you re correct they filmed it then they wanted another season but the needed the actors to sign on tiffany and Elizabeth wanted to pursue other projects
My mother read, somewhere, that Jennifer Esposito got fired from one of her parts because she was sick too often. It turned out she had Celiac's Disease - Gluten sensitivity. Once she learned why, she fixed her diet, got a little healthier, and explained it to them, but they were still impatient with her medical excuse and let her go. Just a theory, but maybe she was starting to get sick on Spin City or other related issues.
She was fired from blue bloods, she was danny's partner. She won the lawsuit resulting from it and reappeared years later on blue bloods as a police chief of a small town.
Don't quote me, but I think one of the main reasons that half of the cast on Spin City was gone when they replaced Michael J. Fox with Charlie Sheen was because filming of the show moved from New York to LA and many of the actors didn't want to move

Sometimes they do this for movies with sequels too. One I remember was the horror movie franchise Poltergeist, when the oldest daughter; Dana, whose real-life actress; Dominique Dunne was murdered by her boyfriend in late 1982, only for them to write out her character in the two sequels never to be mentioned again.
There were two on the series NYPD Blue: Laura Michaels Kelly (played by Sherry Stringfield) in the first season. She was the ex-wife of then-main character Detective John Kelly and the main ADA for the 15th Squad. However, midway through the season, she just stopped appearing. This can probably be chalked up to 1) John already having a love interest in Officer Robin Licasli, played by Amy Brenneman, and 2) another ADA, Sylvia Costas, played by Sharon Lawrence, getting more screen time, because she was also a love interest for Andy Sipowicz. Sherry Stringfield, of course, would land on her feet with "ER" the following year. The other was Detective Adrienne Lesniak, played by Justine Miceli, introduced in the second season. In a storyline that's aged about as well as a carton of milk, Detective James Martinez (Nick Turturro) is constantly hitting on her, so she finally gets him to back off by claiming she's gay. She briefly contemplates that she actually is gay, due to her history of dating terrible dudes, but decides that, no, she's not on that particular team. She even started dating James, but abruptly became so paranoid and possessive that even James got sick of it and dumped her towards the end of the third season. Starting in the fourth season, she was gone with no mention of her whereabouts. Her only subsequent reference was later that season when characters asked if another female officer who actually was gay might be "pulling a Lesniak" (only pretending to be gay).
Judy Winslow is the most talked about disappearing character. It’s really messed up what happened to that actress, she was on celebrity rehab. She also expressed that she would love to return to Hollywood but I’m pretty sure that’s not happening. Jennifer Esposito probably left for other projects. She was in high demand for a while, she was in a lot of theatrical movies. So I’m guessing that she just got bigger than the show.
What gets me about Judy from Family Matters is any excuse that they had too many characters or didn't know what to do with her feels like BS, Waldo and Max, Eddie and Laura's best friends made it into the intro as well as Myra and then later on they also did the new little kid thing with 3J even though they still had Little Ritchie.
You need to remember that the casting couch and other things run rampant in Hollywood, so it should be no surprise why a lot of actors just walked away and vanished from there they didn't want it
