"Do I want to be a Christian? NO!" I think it goes even deeper than that: "CAN I be a christian? Absolutely not". Belief is not a choice. There's absolutely nothing I could do to become a christian, even if I wanted to.

@@Finckelstein, I know a lot of "Christians" would tell me that it never happened, but I was a Christian for a while. Deep in prayer one day, I heard the small, still voice The Bible says God uses to speak to us. It told me that it was Jesus and though I'd done my best to be a Christian, His way wasn't the right path for me to have a relationship with God. I asked what the right path is for me, and the voice told me, "I don't know. But I'm sure you'll find it." Jesus and I parted company that day. I met a Jewish woman years later and learned a lot about Judaism over the course of our 40+ years of marriage. Eventually, I came across a Unitarian Universalist congregation and became a member. I've been on that path ever since, and I've learned that the universe doesn't care whether you believe in a god or not. But your neighbors care about your actions. If your actions promote social cohesion and don't harm others, you'll be OK. Otherwise, your neighbors can make your life a living Hell. 'nuff said.

After years of non-attendance, the bishop contacted me, and I introduced him to my partner. I told him that I knew the church disapproved of our relationship. He asked me if I wanted my name removed from the membership. I told him, "Do what you have to do." I wanted documentary proof that the Mormons have no notion of morality or normal human sexual behavior. A few weeks later, I got a letter of excommunication citing "conduct unbecoming to a Latter-day Saint." Jaywalking in England doesn’t exist. Jaywalking is almost entirely an American thing. Most countries consider walking to be a basic thing that most people should be allowed to do. Traffic needs to work around them.
@joelsmith5613

@FernLovebond 6 дней назад
The point of jaywalking laws (which are almost never enforced, btw, and are mostly used for harassment and an excuse for police to bother someone) is not to limit pedestrian movement, but to assist in reducing the number of deaths from being struck. Not only is jaywalking largely a matter in the US, but so is the massive amount of automobile traffic. With such a huge volume of vehicles in the streets, use of crosswalks and compliance with traffic laws literally saves live. Pedestrians, even when violating ordinances about road crossing, still absolutely have right- of- way, and vehicles are required by law to yield to them, but having regulations that protect people from their own hazardous behavior is nothing new, and not unique to the US. But I take your point in calling out the disparity in Prof's comparison.
@ianbabineau5340
@ianbabineau5340 6 дней назад
@@FernLovebond his argument stands if you substitute some other minor offense (perhaps littering?), I just wanted to correct the statement. I think the larger issue with traffic in North America (Canada is just as bad, not sure about the southern and Caribbean countries) is that cities and the connections between them are almost entirely designed for vehicle traffic. Very little thought is given to pedestrians and how they will get from point a to point b. Europe has a very different attitude about it (partially because many of those cities predate automobiles). It’s an unfortunate situation, and I agree some pedestrian laws are absolutely necessary to avoid death.
@FernLovebond
@FernLovebond 6 дней назад
@@ianbabineau5340 Yeah, I'm with you, just trying to illuminate one of the many ways that the US is self-contradicting and yet also has reasons. I think many of the US problems come from its cultural immaturity combined with its excessive power during its formative "teenage" years (once it got to be about 100 or so). Europe's city planning has been post-hoc for longer than the US has even had cities, so naturally it wasn't based upon automotive concerns like much of ours has been since the auto boom. Hope I didn't come off as too pedantic or attempting to contradict you on your main point.

As an Englishman, jaywalking is possibly the worst example one could use. The very concept is almost entirely against England's laws with regard to public land use (which are mostly 'people walking have priority, and you'd better have a damn good reason for why they don't'). Also, we like our freedoms over here...

The severity of an infraction or crime is proportional to the damage caused. Since you cannot damage an omnipotent being, no matter how much you try, the crime is non-existent. The fact that you cannot damage an omnipotent being is in the very definition of omnipotence. By definition, the omnipotent being can undo the harm immediately and without effort, even if it could be harmed at all. Religious people cannot accept that monotheism is a bad idea. The logical progression goes from animism to pantheism to polytheism to monotheism. Still, it is so full of contradictions that the next logical step is either atheism or back to polytheism, or maybe deism. A monotheistic god that tries to do things and fails is just illogical.

I have often pointed out that one cannot harm a God. The only way one could harm a God would be to harm someone that it cared about, but an actual God would either foresee and prevent such harm, or heal it all, afterwards, so that wouldn't be an issue. As the biblical gods clearly don't give a toss about humans (only caring about humans being obedient, and loving them), and care even less about other animals, they couldn't be victims of any such actions. The concept of “sin” was made up to control people (please don’t bother with the etymology, it’s not relevant). It is immoral, very damaging and illogical. Here's how it works; _pretend_ that being Human and Normal is a problem, then _pretend_ that there will be huge consequences if you fail to not be Human (which is, of course, impossible), THEN PRETEND that you've got a solution (which, of course, includes paying money to a church, and giving up some autonomy, thus giving those who promote the con _more power over you)._ It is so hugely damaging a concept that I’m starting to think that spreading it to others should be a criminal offence.

Christians try to pretend that Jesus's sacrifice was eternal for past and future, and that's how Elijah was able to get in. But it's false because animal sacrifice was used as atonement for sin. If they dare bring up Hebrews 10 to counter, then they're literally acknowledging a contradiction that they have to pretend doesn't exist. 19:22 as he's going into the inevitable "what if I lie to god then" I feel I'd want to respond "Surely there must be a cap on this punishment, even if your logic holds true." Even if it were the case that the punishment depends on who is transgressed against, rather than the severity of the transgression, it's still a minor, finite offense that can in no way merit eternal punishment.
@Nymaz

My response to anyone who tried to say something like that would be to simply point out that if God is infinite in power then it would be impossible to commit any "offense" against him. I would ask them if an ant living on a planet a million light years away had a bad thought about them, how much would they be harmed by that bad thought. Then I would remind them that even such an extreme example is insufficient due to the very nature of "infinite".

@Nymaz

@@NottherealLucifer My point being that despite believing that children get a "free ride", that's not how it works according to Christian theology. Humanity is born inherently sinful and deserving of eternal torture independent of any acts and the ONLY way to avoid it is to consciously declare loyalty to Jesus. The whole "well children of course go to Heaven" is just a handwaving way of coping with the horrible implications inherent to their theology and not at all supported by it. Of course that introduces its own contradictions in that Christians should be celebrating/encouraging abortion or child death as that guarantees Heaven. After all, what is the tragedy of missing out on an "eyeblink on Earth" compared to ETERNAL bliss in Heaven?

If it is morally wrong to take an innocent human life, then claiming that the Creator has an implicit right to take innocent human life is claiming that the Creator has an implicit right to do what is morally wrong. If we try to excuse God by saying that no one is innocent, then we cannot say that murder is morally wrong, since the victim was guilty. If we say that there are varying degrees of guilt, such that not every guilty person deserves death, then it is morally wrong for God to kill anyone innocent of capital offenses. Any way you slice it, God is claimed to have taken human lives that it would be morally wrong for any of us to take, and you cannot have a consistent moral standard that permits God to do what we would be wrong to do. All defenses for divine murder boil down to "might makes right," which is the lowest and worst possible moral standard.

A loving justice system would be based on rehabilitation, but God's infinite forgiveness runs out once you're in hell and you get no opportunity for redemption. I don't believe for a second that not a single person would change their mind once they experience hell if it's as bad as we're made to believe; people just don't work like that. Someone would crack. A loving God would at the very least accept people back after repenting in hell. A more loving God would teach them the error of their ways rather than cause meaningless pain. It's just so fucked up, and people praise it!!! How does someone get broken so badly?

Yeah the hell doctrine most Christians tell me I'm going to go to doesn't make sense. People in Heaven probably would have to be the most self, narcissistic people out there who wouldn't care about their loved ones being punished and suffering for all eternity. But if they don't have any empathy or sympathy, etc. then they wouldn't be eternally praising the creator as that would be praising someone that isn't themselves... And therefore they might care about others and whoops, they might want to do something about Hell, so better have them go there to prevent a breakout... Off topic, because I realise that it was a throw away line. However, this issue is of vital importance as people dismiss the literal Genocide which we're seeing be committed in real time on the grounds that not enough people have been killed yet. So once again, there is no such thing as an "Attempted Genocide." Because such language suggests that a Genocide is only successful when 100% of the target group is killed! In fact, you don't even have to kill a single person to be guilty of Genocide. So to paraphrase Master Yoda, either you commit Genocide or you do not, there is no "Attempted."

17:16 "But, jaywalking in England, that'll carry a significantly harsher punishment, being more round about 1100 years old." I know it's being done for comic effect, but that's not really a good example. The English legal system doesn't contain the concept of jaywalking. A pedestrian might leave themselves open to civil redress if they don't cross the road sensibly and do put other people in danger, but that's it: it's a matter of personal responsibility. We don't have the car culture that developed in America, which prioritises the almighty automobile ahead of all other forms of transport. You might have gone with capital punishment, where in England it was once legal to punish heresy with burning at the stake and high treason with being hanged, drawn and quartered. You'd have to contrast that with the lily-livered punishments available in the US, where the most brutal method they can come up with today is pumping people full of illegally obtained and barely effective chemicals. Main thought I am sure is to keep the center of gravity low and hunker down and hang on tight until the storm passed and the wind abated. Other concerns might be windshield damage and expenses. To start, he keeps dishonestly phrasing the question as "don't WANT to believe." No, I just don't believe. Want or don't want has nothing to do with it. It has everything to do with the complete lack of credible evidence. "God has the right to destroy his creations for any reason" is such a funny argument to bring up because Mark Twain wrote a story called "The Mysterious Stranger" about that, but when it was adapted for TV through claymation, they had to change the titular stranger to Satan because keeping him as God made him look really bad & would've upset Christians. But that shouldn't be the case, right? After all, Twain was just depicting their "perfectly good" God doing the things they say he's completely within his rights to do. This guy is also conveniently leaving out that Hell isn't just for "people like Hitler," or even for that at all. Most Christians would say that you can be "saved by God's grace" as long as you "accept Jesus as your Lord & Savior," no matter what you've done, & that ultimately, everyone who isn't Christian will burn in Hell even if the worst thing they're guilty of is lying about whether or not your pants make you look fat. Oh, this dumb caste system argument is still kicking around. Your kid doesn't have any power to hold things over you, & a judge can only legally punish you if you lie within a certain context, but your wife can get mad at whatever she wants. This is just might makes right again, & even then, the analogy falls apart under the slightest scrutiny.

5:06 - "Christians have almost twice the divorce rate of non-believers" Do they? According to the chart 21% of Christians were married, but divorced, and 54% of Christians are currently married. In comparison, 12% of atheists were married, but divorced, and 36% are currently married. That would mean that 48% of atheists represented in the poll were married at some point, and of those approximately 25% divorced. In comparison, 75% of the Christians represented in the poll were married at some point, and of those about 28% (21 out of 75) divorced As it happens I guess divorce rate doesn't take into account how many of a particular group were married to begin with - and so from that perspective, yes, Christians have a higher divorce rate. But the poll information shows that, if they marry, their chances of divorcing later isn't much higher than for anyone else (28% vs. 25%). I feel like that is the more meaningful metric here.
