As someone who is interested in graphic design and has no formal education in that area, I really enjoy this kind of format you put out. Hope you keep doing this. You're one of the best graphic designers that I look up to!
thanks for the transparency throughout this video dude. i enjoyed this format of video it was easy to zone in on some editing while listening in on your thoughts. I heavily related to your statements on community and being a Work-From-Home Freelancer. Imposter Syndrome settles in easily when working from home sometimes. i made a strong effort this year to make new friends in the filmmaking space and having other creatives to bounce ideas with, and relate to, really benefitted my mental health. great chat, Jesse!
God it's so nice to hear someone of your skill and experience talk about the scatter brain feeling and trying to balance many outputs haha. Work in advertising and then freelance design/animation/video in the music industry, and boy I could relate. Comforting to hear.
I work in-house and work is so slow for us too - so I guess its definitely the holidays. Totally related when you mentioned having imposter syndrome. Its so hard to stay motivated.
love the tip to quit working on a project on a given day when you're ahead, not burned out on it! I may have to try this, as I often become brain dead after a full day of trying to work on design stuff and just come back dreading having to work on it again the next day because of that. Great video!
To be honest, as a freelance graphic designer, I feel alone, I’m always questioning my own work and ideas. I’ve got to the point where I have no idea if what I’m doing is right. I feel there’s only so much you can do on your own, there’s a lot of limitations without collaboration in my opinion.
More of these talks! As someone who creates things for a living I love these types of discussions. Definitely need to work on building a community myself and social media.
I totally feel you, dude! After graduating high school in 2007, I dedicated my time in the summer to study graphic design. It’s about discipline, connecting, and enjoy life wherever you are. I respect your down-to-earth, unfiltered perspective about the graphic design life because that’s how the industry really be.
This is a great idea, loved the candidness of the shot and the real talk. It's fuckin hard dude, balancing it all that is. Especially this time of year, it's like quiet chaos... but videos like this are nice to remind people its just the ebb and flow and you've survived (even flourished at times) before and you can again.
I feel like perfectionism is also something I have to learn to combat and start being more flexible. Delegating stuff to other people and start to branch out is a big part of this, I think. And it's just part of life, you have to trust other people to do work for you, and not only do you have more time to make more "executive" or overall decisions, but you grow as a "Senior" designer, taking in aspects of management, direction, collaboration, training, etc.
yeah man.. totally understand.. time is such an important factor; because its limited and we can only do a specific amount of input (design, content creation, looking for clients etc. etc.) that differs to everyone.
Really loved this video and the layout of it! @Jesse Nyberg, thanks for taking the time to make this video, and there were many things in this video that I could relate to as a fellow graphic designer myself, particularly with how to get my brand growing at a faster pace along with how to grow my clientele. Looking forward to what you do next!🔥👍
Thank you for making this video! I recently have been diving into the design world and your videos have really been pushing me in the right direction with the kind of mindset and inspiration that I need to move forward. Much appreciation for you 🙏🏽
Please make more of these. Love o hear from other designers and share our problems and stuff. I even considered creating videos documenting my journey so this is like that. Love it!
I recently decided to quit my job to pursue graphic design full time. I've never worked in graphic design professionally but it's what I went to school for. It's been a massive passion in my life for so long but only now have chosen to fully dive in.This new pivot in my life has been scary but watching this video and listening to these tips and overall experience of what design can hold for creatives makes me really excited to begin this new path. I'm not naive to the struggles that I will definitely face as a professionally new designer, but to me it seems worth it to pursue it as I know it is something that will give me fulfillment as a person. Thanks a lot for sharing these videos with us - really appreciate it 🤘
I love this style video thank you for so many good tips. Felt stuck in a couple of ways thst you touched on in this video. From the commercial vs artistic/personal/not Google friendly portfolio and how to tackle that problem (love that solution and instantly wrote a note to make those 2 portfolios this weekend) and the somewhat obvious but didn't feel obvious until you said it, problem/solution of making the personal projects and how to become more favorable or interesting as a candidate for the art projects you want to do (ex if you like cars, do car work, if you like music do album art etc) that seems so clear but really was insightful to hear it all how you provided it. Anyways thank you again, I'm sure you're tired of my endless thanking comments 😂but these videos have been so helpful I wanted to make sure you knew it made a difference posting it to someone out there
On your point of doing something else creative; I'm not a designer. I'm a Head of Marketing. I do some design work, but not a lot. The reason I watch your channel is to have another creative outlet. Not to impact my small pile of design work so much, but to expand my creative thinking and experiences. Having other creative things to watch, read, listen to, and learn from are superb for enhancing creative thinking.
I enjoyed working on a new piece while listening to this, super insighful and loved the laid back vibe. Inspired by your hardcore series i'm going to do one for metal bands.
I love the laidback convo vibe. I found a lot of what you said relatable, and informative as someone who's still pretty new in their design journey. My main 2024 goals are to create more consistently, improve my video editing game, and expand my presence on social media.
Nice video. I feel like for the time mgmt stuff, you could block out multiple days to dedicate to each avenue, so for example: 3 days for design, next 4 days for video, next 2 days for newsletter. Giving yourself this time might make you feel less scatterbrained
I love this type of content, Jesse! I love watching you create great designs, but i think you're really good at also talking about the person behind the design aswell. I think it's wonderful that you're actually talking about all the intricacies of being a designer. Keep it up! :)
Really enjoyed listening to you. every word you said was pure facts. thank you for inspiring and sharing. "leave your work on a cliffhanger" damn the best quote I've heard in this year. what a way to end the year with, I love that.
I like chatty Jesse Nyberg format. I like hearing your thoughts, I really relate to it, being kind of more of an "alt" person myself. I've always been conflicted about wanting to make more grungy or gothy or experimental types of design vs. the corporate stuff, and in school I made a bunch of corporate crap because I just wanted to get a job, it seemed like that was what got people jobs. But hearing you talk about your own experiences, it inspired me more to go more towards experimental forms of design. It also just kinda helps and relates to life too, a lot of what you say. Like what you say, helps wholisitically, and not just in design. You're not some stale corrupted robotic business dude, which is cool
This is very Insightful as well as all of your videos are 🔥 keep up the great work. It's definitely alot of frustrations out there, and being realistic is rrefreshing. I don't find this common with some graphic design youtubers. I think this is very eye-opening and would love to see more laid back videos like this. Don't know if you heard of a RU-vid juxtopossed (if I spelled it righ) who is a web designe, but there's alot of same beliefs. Theirs humor in the videos, but the constant rhetoric about style and niche is so common amongst creative especially with social media. Rooting for you 🎉 hope you get that 100k!
There were many moments during the video that I just wanted to comment on things you were talking about, It felt like a conversation almost. I relate to you in many ways as a web designer and content creator. I have many similar goals. One of my goals is to reach 10,000 subscribers and another work with my ideal clients in my niece.
I think my big goal is to take design seriously in 2024. As someone studying gd in college I meet so many people that are looking forward to graduation but have no technical skills, and realizing it kind of opened my eyes on the fact that I have a similar problem. In 2024 I am going to make time and prioritize working on my technical skills and sharing my work on my sm.
I have that problem as well. And so do most of my classmates. I hope so far you are working well on fixing these issues, I am just now starting but it is finally time.
I have formal training and I have some work experience through the print shop im at, some small client stuff, wedding colateral etc. Ive been trying to push my own lyric art series (some good some misses). My issue is consistency, doing the 5-9 after the 9-5 can just be exhausting mentally. If you have any advise on that maybe I can make my goal for 2024 to feel like a legit designer and not just someone that does it sometimes lol 😅
Yeah that’s true a lot is the OG hardcore bands like Mad ball, bad brains, gorilla biscuits and youth of today all have pretty dope design. However in the early 2000s and when I was in highschool in the 2010s hardcore had some pretty bad design going around.
Your videos motivate me alot to become a better designer, i definitely enjoyed the talk you gave especially about reaching out to other artists and collaborating with them, as for my goals this coming year i would like to be more consistent on yt and reach 1000 subs and 1000 followers on Instagram, im also tryna make music. Wishing you and everyone the best this coming year and cannot wait to see what the next year has to offer.
