After reviewing Sharpie S-Gel pens recently, a lot of folks expressed their love for Uniball pens by the Mitsubishi Pencil Company, who also makes Posca markers and Lamy pens.

Mark, thanks for another pleasant video. Just watching you lowers my blood pressure, which is always appreciated! I just use plain old ballpoint pens for my waterproof work. You just have to keep wiping them with a rag.

Thanks Mark so much for the video and your latest ones. I also like to discover pens, the problems that it could be a real miss but enjoyable. I like much the fountain pens and the Lamy brand is wounderful. Smearing is also nice as part of the shadow sometimes. Thanks again for the video.

Just for information, because I'm used to seeing this kind of minsunderstanding about waterproof inks in gel pens: it doesn't mean the ink won't reactivate and smear a bit, it means the writing won't fade or disappear when added water to it. I know it's a horrible communication mistake, the stationery community needs to find a better way to get the idea through, but that's what they mean when they say "waterproof" or "water resistant".

I remember, in Jr High, when the Bic 4 color pen was a major status symbol. Hafta admit, I still use Bic pens to draw with, sometimes, too. Thank you for these videos, interesting to see these pens in action.

Uni-Ball Air is one of my go to pens for quick urban sketching. I was surprised to see how much it reactivated with water in your demo. I use it on unsized sketchbooks (not cotton, not watercolor paper) and can add light water color washes without reactivating the ink.

As a nurse i always found gel pens to be a bit costly to write. I know that there are some Nursing colleagues that love using gel pens but the amount of writing i do a pen maybe last a week, and in Belize gels are about $3-4 per pen roughly $1.50 - 2 USD. There are cheaper versions but the good stuff cost high. Thank you for your perspectives on gel pens. It is funny i like quality art supplies but used cheap pens for work 😂

Same here, went to collage in Russia. I had a lot of stationary for fun but didn't use gel pens for school. I could use one or two a day. Such a waste of pen and plastic, felt unnesesery wastful to me. Pilot ball point pens were my favorite and lasted a week or more.

You overlooked Uniball Vision ( not Vision Elite)Their ink is waterproof and smear proof once dry. Fine size is widely available. Micro size can be bought online. Great for urban sketching.

Uniball Signo 207 Ultra Micro is my dayjob workhorse! In terms of "protects against water" - stationary terminology is kinda lame. But the easiest explanation is if you've got a notebook full of notes, and you drop it in a puddle - there might be a wee bit of smearing, but your notes will still be legible. Instead of the notebook just turning into a gray-toned notebook with all your work lost. I do wish some pen companies were more consistent in their descriptions though. Jeez.

They do leave nice solid black lines but dry too slowly, so no matter how careful I am with drawing, I end up with at least one smear. So frustrating.

I hardly ever use Fineliners, Ballopints, Gel pens anymore. My preferred tool is a fountain pen with Platinum Carbon Black ink. 100% Waterproof, no smearing, no grey clouds when washed. When it comes to India ink my preferred ink is Rohrer&Klingner Zeichentusche (drawing ink), behaves perfectly, blackest black, but of course not suitable for fountain pens.
