Guess I won't be buying this scanner anytime soon, I was ready to make the purchase but unfortunately for Uniden and fortunately for me I saw and watched this video. Thanks for saving me greif.

Thanks for making these videos Mike. Good repair. I drag solder to on quad flat packs etc.

Grant Fullen Have all the high end hot air equipment but I find myself drag soldering more and more. If I was assembling new PCB's I would probably use hot air but for doing repairs nothing beats the speed of the good old iron.

Thanks for the video, luckily mine was just a loose ribbon at the faceplat side. It even had glue on it!!! nocked the glue off, reseated and boom! back in business.

Boy, what a coincidence...I just acquired a Uniden BCD996T scanner from a SK estate and after looking at the manual I figured I had to go back to college to understand it. Luckily a friend who is a retired fire captain has the same radio all set up for the local public service agencies and they can be cloned...I told him "Clone me brother, clone me" and look forward to getting it back soon (I still like my two PRO-2006's!).

Dino Papas LOL, the clone feature is really nice. Personally I'm a fan of Whistler scanners. So much easier to set up. I do miss the good old days when they were simple to program.

You can use a heat gun too after pulling ribbon cable. I have repaired many ham radios, scanners and other solder points.

Donald D'Egidio Other than the power level drop when modulated that is working OK. I just had to make up a cheat sheet for output settings to account for the output difference.

Nice repair Mike. I think Uniden has now become UniDONE lol. I hate stuff that you cannot get service material for.
@mikesradiorepair
@mikesradiorepair 7 лет назад
The Radio Shop I guess we can consider ourselves lucky in one respect. Electronics are fairly reliable these days with the exception of electrolytic capacitors and solder joints. So when something does break there is a chance it's something simple like a bad solder joint. Solder joints in modern mobile radios could be compared to electrolytic capacitors in a modern flat screen TV's, the most unreliable things there are.
@TheRadioShop
@TheRadioShop 7 лет назад
Yep, these new TV's are terrible with them. We do have it a bit easy these days. Well two more days and santa comes to your house :-)

Hello Mike , i have 3 of these 15x's one being brand new because about 3 weeks ago the one i have on my nightstand .. sometimes i turn it off before falling to sleep,and sometimes i fall asleep and wake up in the middle of the night and turn it off. well on this one night it was working fine (audio coming out) when i fell asleep and then when i woke up i seen it was still scanning and stopping on the busy channels but NO audio was present. i turned it off and found time a week or 2 later to look at it , i even tried using a pair of headphones and a ext. speaker but no AUDIO from those as well.. I did a full reset to see if that might fix it but to no avail. i did send uniden a email but its the weekend so i was hoping to hear back from them this week sometime, but your video here doesn't sound like i will . i have a small amount of experience with a soldering iron and even bought a "rework" reflow hot air station that ive used once on a dji drone remote controller with success ;-) any ideas for me before i open up the hood on this thing.. thanks in advance - steve

Is it something like Digital Voice or QPSK or QAM, I do wonder if they are using DES64 or AES256 chips or spread spectrum communications.

I'm actually formerly certified with IPC J-STD-001 when I used to work for one of the world's largest Electronic Component Manufacturers and it didn't surprise me one bit with that flex connector assembly. That's one of those obvious design specifications that I've had to often rework, mostly due to using SAC 305 solder (for RoHS compliance). Now that I perform SMT rework on my very own time (mostly sidework for private persons), I prefer to use eutectic leaded solder for reworking connector designs like those, provided it's legal and obtaining full customer consent. Despite other technician's negative experiences, I have had very good experience with SAC 305, with the exception of situations where a strain from a connection ribbon (or other possible component pressure) could force the tiny, yet brittle microscopic dislocations open.
@mikesradiorepair
@mikesradiorepair 7 лет назад
Dyaxxis I use sn62 composition silver solder for most work except when soldering gold plated parts. It has one of the highest tensile strengths of tin composition solder. I have found it to be the best solder to use in mobile radio applications where extreme vibration causes a lot of solder joint failures.
@Dyaxxis
@Dyaxxis 7 лет назад
Actually that's the leaded solder I use as well for that type of application (62/36/Ag2). I kept confusing it with the 63/37 that's on the reel right next to it (what I use on mostly on vintage electronic instruments). EDIT: Things got confusing since a lot of the solder types in my place is a result of the technicians in my former workplace having to buy the consumables in order to remain employed (because the ECM's are cheap bastards).

Back in the 80's I helped co-author 3 scanner books, I haven't dorked with them in at least 15 years...still have about 6 scanners or so...all packed up, a mix of Uniden and Realistic, which I believe are Uniden's anyway? ~Jack, VEG

Vintage Electronics Geek It's almost a even 50-50 split who made Realistic scanners. About half are Uniden made and the other half are made by GRE.

i don't know but this may seems sound stupid, i bought a BCT15X and i couldn't get nothing to come through, after opening it the wire was disconnected from antenna input and after i watched the video, looks like there is a resistor or something there that is connected to the antenna, and i have looked to see how it was connected and no luck on the search

Very great video, just an off topic question, If I hook up a small portable CB antenna (same antenna as your cobra "walkie talkie"). Straight into my analog oscilloscope (20MHz) and use that to monitor my CB radio, Im I gonna fry something into the scope??
@mikesradiorepair
@mikesradiorepair 7 лет назад
Hugo Martel It would work but is going to pick up everything else on air to. The best thing to do is use a simple in line sample port. Then you are only looking at what is coming out of the radio.

Henry Blais The US is slowly switching to the Open Sky system. Trunked systems make sense. They allow across agency communications. Being able to communicate between agencies or even states can be crucial in a emergency. My problem is the lack of public transparency.

101blog Have hot air rework equipment already. In tight locations especially when there is plastic near by a soldering iron is a better tool sometimes. That's just one of my daily carry pieces and is a little big when setting in a chair with arms.
@101blog
@101blog 7 лет назад
I figured you really must have some Air Rework tools... You have everything else. Have you tried Kapton film or just a bit of Aluminum foil as a heat shield for those tight spots?!
@mikesradiorepair
@mikesradiorepair 7 лет назад
101blog Sometimes the handy old reliable iron is just faster and easier. Also, on big surface mount connectors like this doing the drag soldering method allows me to more easily apply a heavier solder bead to prevent it from breaking loose again.
@101blog
@101blog 7 лет назад
Indeed I would probably use one of those horse shoe like bits with the hollow bit in the middle since you can just load up and drag straight down the edge of the connector. Either way I'm impressed with both the number and the quality of the vids!

ᗒ╬ᗕ1112223333111ᗒ╬ᗕ Just one of my daily carry pieces. It's not a snub nose so the longer barrel makes it a little uncomfortable / awkward when setting. Have about 20 or so pistols I rotate through as daily carry pieces, some larger than others. My favorite is my SIG Sauer P229 SAS Gen 2. Their custom shop does an amazing job on smoothing these out for the ultimate concealed carry auto.

cheezervvvvv Yep, my thoughts exactly. And probably around the time everybody starts using the same system they will switch to something else and spend lord knows how many hundreds of millions of dollars upgrading to the next latest and greatest system.
