In this video I demonstrate the Audio quality of the scanner speaker and the Audio quality of my local P25 system.
System Monitering is Michigan's Public Safety Communications System (MPSCS) a Project 25 Phase 1 system.
3 different types of modulation: C4FM Phase 1, C4FM, and CQPSK Phase 1. In my area CQPSK is the newest and sounds clearer then C4FM.
The scanner definitely has some minor issues that are hopefully addressed with a Firmware update. I will make a video going over a few of my findings.
All in all I really do like the scanner, the Display is large and endlessly configurable colors wise. Even with a few quirks I would highly recommend this scanner for true enthusiasts.

If you don't want to press Menu several times to get out of it if you are several layers deep, you can just press AVOID. That instantly brings you back to the main scanning screen. Nice video!

Best thing about this video as a long time radio enthusiast, the first thing I was looking for I found here. A good sample of audio, the amplification of the built-in speaker, the signal strength simply receiving inside of a structure, very well done! This video here helped make my decision to buy much easier. I like the older telescopic adjustable antenna! Thanks

Thank you. I absolutely love mine AND I am going to by the base/mobile version now to add as a permanent piece to my Amatuer radio shack. The portable I love because it goes everywhere with me. I have never used a scanner as much as I have used this one and I have a few scanners😅. They fixed the battery issue last Fall and mailed us early owners a new larger battery and battery cover. So my original battery makes a nice backup battery now.

I got a replacement yesterday, and its working great, and put the RadioShack RS800 antenna on it, and wow, the signal improvement is unbelievable

I also own this scanner, bought it back in August and it came with the larger battery, this is the best scanner I have owned in the 25 plus years of the radio hobby, and for those complaining about the price, you pay the same or more for a cell phone and think nothing of it and cell phones are not worth the price in anyway! they charge so much for them because they know they can jack the price up and everyone will still pay for them, $1000 for the latest iPhone is beyond stupidity! so yeah maybe these are expensive but I thoroughly enjoy mine and works great in all modes, this nonsense that these are junk in analog vhf or uhf... user error all the way, I do not believe they fucked up the vast majority of their products and sold them anyway, before you waste your time and say that I don't know what I'm talking about, actually go back and figure out your scanner before passing judgement.

I'm still loving mine. Hands down best scanner ever owned. I have yet to get the larger battery. It's my fault for not verifying my address, need to do that. I agree with everything you said my friend, and learned to just ignore the haters, trolls, and jealous people. Take care.

Where can I as a newbie go to find out if this will be good for me in my area (Dekalb County, GA)? I have an old analog unit but they started using some new P25 stuff that I know nothing about.

Modern cell phones can do much more then that scanner. They are more powerful then the computers of the early 2000s. Hence the price tag.

Even if police go encrypted that dont necessarily mean the fire and EMS will. Additionally there are private security agencies private business radio, marine band, aircraft, coast guard, ham bands, frs, gmrs, civil air patrol car races, air shows, DMR, Hospitals, the International space station, schools.. There will always be something to listen to..

I use a small external speaker for cb radio on my Uniden BC355N and it sounds awesome. I tried the speaker on the SDS100 and it had very little volume.

They are early “adopters,” not adapters. Nonetheless, I recently got the SDS100 and have had a lot of fun with the Close Call feature. Nice video.

Unfortunately, most government services in Australia have been encrypted for many years now. Nothing to hear here that would justify the price.

Yes. This was my first Uniden so it took me a little while to understand the software. But watched a few YT videos and piece of cake. Best digital scanner ever owned!

My county dos not have eruption. The sheriff was encrypted since 2013 they went none encrypted yr back.

It is far from perfect! They have several things to hopefully fix with Firmware updates. I am eagerly awaiting a very vital fix. Meanwhile I'm going to be ordering a Unification G5. They offer the best APCO P25 reception, but they are not a scanner and extremely difficult to program.

I got mine friday, and sent it back for another sds100, not sure if something was wrong with it or not, just missed a lot of traffic. Hopefully the next work one works as well as yours. I love the display. Are you using the stock antenna?

I thought mine was not working also at first. But two factors played a roll. First, I have never owned a Uniden brand scanner so have never used the "Sentinel" software. Second, the stock antenna is really pretty aweful. I figured out more about the software and have been tweaking my profile daily and I use a telescoping antenna now. The antenna is alot better then stock but look forward to aftermarket antennas specifically designed for the SDS100. Those two factors have greatly improved my reception. They do have some issues that future firmware will hopefully fix but I'm really liking this scanner. So much so I don't want to hook it up to my pc to provide my Radio Reference feed, I want to be able to have it mobile with me wherever I go.

hemiram2k5 make sure you are clear of other electronics. That seems to be the major issue, interference from other things. Set mine on the laptop and found on the right side it didn't receive anything, put it on the left and book, started receiving. Turns out it was over the computers WiFi card on the right side 😉

Ok here’s my situation. I have been using SDRs on my computer scanning the Kent allegan and ottawa county calls on the ottawa towers. But I have been having problems with it so I want the sds100 so I don’t have to deal with it anymore. My question is if I want to listen to only those county’s is that possible or not.? Doesn’t seem like many states have shared systems to the info isn’t easy to find.

This is much more than the SDS 200 after mucho accessories so I expect good audio from what's supposed to be a high-end radio. Of course, no handheld will do good in a noisy car. But size is no excuse since the smallest radio I ever had (Icom R2) had decent audio, much better than anything Uniden had at the time, any size. I didn't get mine yet but also ordered a SDS 200 as I'm a sucker for displays that's color can be changed. The 396XLT was my favorite cuz it had 5 or 6 colors to switch between. I like your style letting us hear a scanner, while many j@ck@sses talk an hour to an hour and a half with like 30 seconds of scanner audio in it.

Just remeber peoples, although this is a great radio, if the agency uses encryption you wont hear anything but noise or nothing.

@@MiTreasureHunter I agree with you, but sadly there are retailers who do not pass on that information to buyers who then buys the scanner and wonders why they cannot hear anything. Especially when they are new to the hobby.

@@jcramond73 If you are like myself I am a FCC licensed Amateur Radio operator so this piece of equipment is a nice addition to my shack. Encrypted or not, on my level of communication reception it makes no difference. It is a very sensitive scanner that provides a lot of information and add a GPS unit to it and it will auto track your location and load the correct frequency list for the area you are in. Best scanner I have ever owned and I have Yupiteru and AOR communication receivers.

Hey Man, I need some help putting some MI frequencies in my scanner. I am looking to add Berrien Fire, EMS, and PD into my SDS100 and I am missing something when I program it. I have the frequencies in my favorite list but what am I missing. I live in Michigan City but spend a lot of time in NBuffalo. Thanks man. Hope you can help

Function , while scanning trunk will offer site, to hold particular tower/site, the record features real nice. You should consider the upgrades, Dmr. ProVoice, Nxdn

I may get DMR but no ProVoice in our area. NXDN, nothing within listening range of home, maybe at work. Upgrades in the future after they fix current P25 issues.

Did you have to input the talk group #s for the MPSCS system? I'm in Oakland county, and usually pick up Northville tower. I have been listening on my pro96, which has always worked well... Any advice on picking up some of the other MPSCS towers? ie. Holly, and others... I'm looking forward to this SDS100, which is coming tomorrow... Woot!

I programmed it using the Sentinel software to make a few Favorites lists. Never used the software before and figured it out without much effort. Program in several other towers if you think they are close enough and have other traffic/talkgroups not broadcast on your main listening tower. The better the antenna the better the reception. I am going to get back into Ham radio so going to be putting up some nice base antennas. I used to pull Chicago in and I'm over 70 miles away but I'm close to the Lake Michigan shoreline.

When I tried to program the MPSCS system, it put ALL the tower locations in, and looks like it scans through all of them... What did I miss? Yours looks like you are just scanning the one tower...

Using the free downloadable software is the absolute best and easiest way. You need to have the software anyways to update the internal database and Firmware. Once its updated you dont need to program in anything you just set the location in the scanner to the zip code you want to scan. If you want to program agencies or make a list then you use the software to build your favorites and upload it to the scanner.

Dont have a AUX input you think for the price of these cars you would have won. Guess ill have to hope a Blue Tooth scanner comes out or look for a external speaker

Brian 3 get a portable FM broadcaster that plugs into the 3.5mm scanner output , then tune your FM radio to the station. Plenty of portable FM broadcasting devices availble and they sre pretty cheap. Thats the way I did in the past for a head unit thst did not have a 3.5mm input.

If your car has Bluetooth you can Wirelessly connect a ICOM R30 to its Speakers , and ICOM R30 also has Built in GPS as well, UNIDEN is still behind the time , they need a Cable and Hockey Puck to do GPS.

Absolutely untrue. Some counties, cities do but it's not like the entire country is encrypted. In in my area of SW Michigan only a very few cities have encryption. The do encrypt sensitive channels like Narcotics and some Special Events. Otherwise I listen to nearly all the traffic around me for atleast 75 miles in any direction. In my area, state these scanners are 100% worth the money!

If you Google (Encryption able radio scanners) they have one or two that descramble the Encryption. The problem is they are $3000-$6000

LOL I doubt the price is going anywhere. Battery pack so you just charge it nightly or when in your car, simple. Not everyone wants or needs DMR and NXDN. If you don't like then don't buy one, simple as that.

James Acri also, Uniden pays a license fee for DMR NXDN and Pro Voice. Whistler is actually charging the same, but skimped elsewhere. So it appears a better deal when it's not.

Wow I don't know where this "myth" got started...but there is no licensing fee for decoding ....AND if there were it would need to have been FCC type approved for commercial receiver licensing (like DRM/HD radio broadcasting). If this transmitted...yes a fee would then be worked out. The only thing Uniden need's to do is drop a plug with an * XXXXX and XXXXX are registered trademarks of XXXXXXXX etc. This is why I lost all \ALL/ interest in any Uniden product after this scam. Along with their "marketing" of SDR as what? a bonus? THE ONLY bonus is to their bottom line....but theirs a sucker born every minute, a fool and his gold are soon parted and last but not least...put YOUR grandchildren thru college...NOT someone else's.

There are not even any demo units of those, so you are basing your preference on a list of words. If they are better I will get one, but for now they are a concept. I waited 7 months for a very hyped new metal detector to only be disappointed by the actual unit once it was in hand.

MiTreasureHunter - fact is LSM I/Q receivers are NOT unique to Uniden, Everyone now has them, even ICOM and AOR , the Only diff is ICOM and AOR do not do Trunking. and the AOR DV-10 gets a heck of a lot of MORE Digital modes than Uniden for FREE. I am basing my Choice on the FACT that Whistler will not CHARGE for Digital modes like DMR and NXDN.

@@JuarezDerrick - I suggest Waiting for the NEW scanners due from Whistler, they will Actually WORK as opposed to Uniden and offer Superior LSM Decoding. If PRICE is a concern , Whistler has the wh1098 scanner on Closeout for $399, it comes with a SD card with the Entire USA and Canada database on it, and you can use the EZ scan software to Update for FREE.

@@markplott4820 Whistler isnt coming out with anything new. They abandoned the new TRX 100 and 200 because they couldnt make it worked. They bluffed and failed. Uniden is the only player right now with a working scanner that can properly deal with simulcast issues.

@@RellyOhBoy- That is FALSE, Whistler is still making PREMIUM Scanners and will Continue to do so, However they are Regrouping after deciding NOT to go ahead with the TRX-100/200 Project, they Will continue to Manufacture the TRX-1/2 and will Develop MORE Future Scanners, HOPEFULLY with a Continous Coverage design. NOPE, the ICOM R30 is a VIABLE scanner capable of Dealing with P25 LSM Transmissions, you just have to Scan MANUALLY, that's no Problem for me, as I have been using CR for 20+ years.Perhaps ICOM can provide a SDR and Radio board to help Whistler.
