Left the video running and saw the added b-roll at the end. Funny hearing those sorts of interactions between kids and realising playing with Unfi gear is more fun!
@@LarsKlintTech - 1st one is Covering our front enterance door / receiption area and 2nd one will be looking over a rear door. Both indoors and mainly just for security. Long range IR wasn't a requirement more just a bonus feature, was primarily the pricepoint & newer cameras that I chose these.
Thanks for recommending these. Just received the G5s, hopefully they will handle the -25 celsius this winter. Running the DM-SE in a weatherproof outdoor server rack with some passive switches to keep it comfy in there.
Excellent video as always Lars. I have Unifi networking but the cameras were always too expensive. When you tagged this as affordable, I was expecting a few hundred euros. Pleasantly surprised to find it for just under 100 euros here in ireland, direct from Unifi. I think I see some new cameras in my future. Thanks, Eddie
I'm still very surprised by the quality and features of this camera for $129 RRP, so I'm with you there Eddie. Thanks for watching and keep the feedback coming 🙂
8:05 oh this 3-layer rotation is a better design than HhikVison's turret cam, where I would need to consider the locking twist angle of the camera before screwing down the base plate. this is convenient.
I like the camera, but I am not sure I like the flying ethernet lead. I would prefer it have the connector like the other cameras have as that flying lead seems to have a slightly chunkier connector, meaning a bigger hole in a ceiling to feed it through, not to mention a point of failure if the cable is damaged. Aside from that, this is definitely a great camera from the more affordable end of Ubiquiti's range. I still think Unifi have some of the best IR Night vision on their cameras out of all the brands. It just always seems so crisp compared to other brands, including more expensive ones.
The camera is really great. Still my favourite low price camera from Unifi. The rat tail connector does remove the ingress point of failure from the outside to the inside, which is useful, and you are right that you need a slightly bigger hole for it to pass through.
Good choice! It is a really good camera. Just remember that the kinda bulky "rat tail" connector doesn't fit in normal cable runs, if you can't drill the big hole for it.
Hey Lars, thanks again for the video. I’ve ordered my turrets and nvr but have to wait a month for stock! 😢 Are you still happy with how it’s going? Thanks Andrew
No worries Andrew. Thanks for watching. I am still very happy with the Turret Ultra. I still think it is the best "price friendly" camera Unifi makes. I have used it to watch out for Wombats, check on the dog, and even monitored a fire in a stump I was trying to remove. 😁
As mentioned in your earlier post, if it wasnt for that "annoying" rat-tail of a connector this would be my absolute go-to camera for both my own install but also the recommendation for my customers. Its perfectly priced, can be mounted in most places and the output is really great. I have 2 + Dome Ultra (which I find less useful) but I will be replacing a few of my older cameras with these once I find the right way to wallmount it with cables running on the wall and not through ceiling or wall.
Yeah, I hear you. I am still thinking they made this decision to make it fit in more locations and more mounts. I will ask nonetheless. I really like the Dome Ultra too (next week's video), but my favourite is definitely still the Turret.
What's the difference between the G5 Turret Ultra and G5 Flex? Are they just the same camera orher than form factor or is one a better camera over the other?
They are very similar. The main difference is the Turret has a IP66 rating compared to the Flex being IPX4, so the Turret is meant for outdoors, the Flex not so much. The form factor can be a deciding factor too, as you can mount the Turret more flush to walls etc.
May I ask where you are sourcing all the latest equipment from? I ask because recently when you had a video on a switch you were replacing, the powercord was US and you discarded that. So led me to think you must be getting them from the UI web store, but when I try and use their webstore there is no way to be able to get something shipped to Australia. If you were buying from any Australian reseller, I assume they would have the AU plug. So are UI sending you these items as freebies? Or how are you able to get access to all their latest gear otherwise?
I love the detective work 😀 It's no secret that UI sends devices for review, which is one of the perks of being passionate about creating good content, and spending many many hours on it. It comes from the US so the power cord is one of the things that I need to replace most of the time.
@@LarsKlintTech all good. Was not suggesting anything about you getting free stuff. Good to see you being rewarded for your work. Thought there might’ve been a trick you knew the rest of us didn’t doe their web store.
The problem is, that the hole in the wall or ceiling has to be much larger than on other Unifi cameras because the grommet is larger than an ethernet cable plug. Might not be a problem for the people with wooden houses but my cable has to go through a concrete garage wall.
Yep, I'm in country Vic. I get some gear from various IT shops online, and some UI sends to me for review. Getting stock is hard, so the prices often reflect that unfortunately. I've got some second hand too.
@@LarsKlintTech I've been trying to get hold of the G5 Turret Ultra for weeks, and every shop here in Norway is out of stock. And the price is roughly 1300 NOK / 185 AUD.
@@CrinosAD It is a very popular device, cause it is amazing value for money. Can you use the Unifi EU store? They get restocked regularly, but sell out fast.
Thanks for watching. I buy some of it locally on Kogan, Ubiquiti Shop and other places. UI has also been a supporter of the channel and sends devices for review.
Good question. It kinda depends on the size and layout of your carport. Really wide angle cameras, like the G5 Dome Ultra (video coming next week) gives a pretty good view. I wouldn't use a camera with a long IR range, as you probably don't need it in a carport.
@@LarsKlintTech this is actually rather helpful as I was considering doing a G5 Pro with Enhancer at the back of the carport, facing the cars. Perhaps a G5 Turret or AI Theta might be better in that location. I have the doorbell also in that space but it’s coverage is limited. I planned on a G5 PTZ on the outside corner of the carport (two walls are the house, with front and right side being open-air).
@@jrmbtr The G5 Pro is a great camera too, so you need to figure out if that is overkill, which I would say it is in a carport where the range needed is likely limited. I haven't tried the AI Theta, so can't really comment, and I just received the G5 PTZ, so that is coming in a video soon too.
@@LarsKlintTech when I bought the G3 Flexs last year they were at a very similar price point as the turret now. I was on a budget, replacing cheap tapo cameras, so the extra for a G5 flex wasn't worth it at the time.
@@opless Ah, I see. I am with you, things change fast. However, if we kept waiting for the better thing, we would never do anything. I still have three G3 Flex, and they are okay (but not amazing).
@@LarsKlintTech they were okay for 5-10m which is more than enough for most UK residential surveillance. But now the turret is available and 2k... 🫣🤣 The recent encoder update has nerfed things a little, so I probably need to adjust my plans slightly 🤔
Not a comment about the camera, but I did see on the Early Access channel that Talk for Australia is not in the Talk app in EA. Not sure if you saw that or not.
@@LarsKlintTech It is supported in Canada and the UK currently. Coming to the EU and Germany. Now coming to Australian. I am sure it has to do with regulations and such for each country as well as getting Talk to work in those countries as well as the local countries other SIP providers. They also have to work up a way to port over numbers as well. So a lot that has to line up before it will work.
I'm thinking about the new "Ultra" series... - I bought a full PoE 8port Ultra switch - cheaper than a half-PoE 8port Lite - I bought GW Ultra - cheaper than GW standard - I'm now buying the G5 Turret Ultra - cheaper than the G5 Flex/Bullet Is the "Ultra" line the new "best buy" way?
I haven't, but have considered it several times. I'd really like a PoE powered one, so I don't need to pull power cables. Maybe your comment was the final nudge I needed 😉
Hi Lars, I also have the camera up and it replaced a G5Flex in the garden. Will be interested in the AI animal detection as we only have a cat from the neighborhood walking by in a distance and only got identified once. Was hoping for better IR range but the other cameras also have lights and this is why I cannot judge the difference.
So far I haven't had any animals not being detected that I know of, but that is of course a tricky thing to verify. I am really happy with the IR range for the price point and comparing to more expensive cameras. Have you considered an IR spotlight? Any way of mounting that in your place?
@@LarsKlintTech Hi Lars, I have a second camera from Netatmo with IR Spotlight covering some overlapping area detecting the cats, hedgehogs and birds. On the light tiles it is working good for animal and people detectionbut on the grass about 7m behind it might be that the contrast it to less.
MP is important especially if you go ultra wide. The wider it is the more blurry it will be at the same res. I recommend not getting any of these really.
I don't agree it is a general fact like you make it out to be. You can have very clear 1080p footage, and very blurry 4K footage. If the lens and sensor is good quality and working well, that matters more imo.
I don't see any grounding on that dongle (a metal piece that presses against the side of a shielded rj45), so a static charge can build up and jump to the data pins and the dome ultra has the metal shield in the dongle, even though it's almost an indoor-only camera 🤦 braindead company
reolink is better option in terms of hardware. Their cameras are better and fare cheaper, plus no subscription either A wish i would like to see, being able to use third party cameras with unifi protect. I have 10 4k cameras from reolink on my house. Buying 4k cameras from unifi would be insane price wise
Thanks for the insights. In what way is the hardware better? The materials, the longevity, the UV resistance? Which bits? There are quite a few bespoke features in Protect, so it would be a big ask to include third party cameras. Not much to gain from Unifi's side either I reckon.
@@LarsKlintTech mainly the 4K, and mega pixel. For less cash you can have 12mp 4K Reolink camera with two way audio. Plus Reolink has a larger POE camera option selection. Color night vision etc… Tbh I want to setup my home with unifi, but paying prices for 1gb port switches etc seems a bit high. Think for the price premium the std should be 2.5gb on all ports. And unifi pro models should be 10gb and more.
@@ozzy4654 Okay, got it. I have a Reolink trail cam, which has been really good too, but the let-down is the software imo. It isn't as polished at all. I have said this before too, but I'd rather have a high quality 2K image, than an okay 4K image. More pixels doesn't always mean better image. I do think Reolink has pretty good sensors though and their colour night vision look awesome.
Click the link in the description to get the camera listing and the tech specs shows the sensor size as 1/2.4" CMOS. No need to be so negative, just because you have a specific piece of data you need. Others might want to know other things about the camera.
Thanks for your insightful comment Andy. I am keen to hear what you think I might "have no clue about" in particular. It appears you have trouble being specific, in sharp contrast to my video on the LinknLink ISG device, which was very specific on it not being useful for anyone and only adding unnecessary complexity. Perhaps watch that video to get a sense of how you can create constructive and useful feedback that can improve products and content.
