I notice you mounted the powered portion of the Smart Sensor to the door. This seems like it would be less than optimal. Whenever the door opens, the motion detection would cover a different area. I would think you would want the powered portion on the wall, with the magnet detecting open or close on the door. In addition, how far away does the magnet work for detection of open/close? This might be really important for things like garage doors, where you can't get the magnet that close to the garage door. Another important consideration would be how quickly do these detect motion? Does it give a very quick response, which would be useful for turning on lights as you enter a room, or does it take several seconds. In addition, any info from UI on if they will support Matter/Thread going forward, so that this might interoperate with other devices? At this price point, they will need to be quite good, or other existing solutions will have stronger feature sets.
The alarm function listens for standard carbon monoxide and/or fire alarm tones and can trigger events based on that like push notifications and other events.
Minor correction. CO, not CO2. Carbon monoxide is far more dangerous, while CO2 is all over the place, so thank God it isn't. But yes, the product page shows it listens for fire and carbon monoxide alarm patterns found in standard fire alarms in houses and aparments.
Would be super cool if they added an option for the motion detection, where if your phone is not active on the wifi and motion is detected, it will send a push notification with a picture from the associated camera. So you can add Mac address groups, say you, kids, wife etc. And if none are present the house "Arms" and will not send notifications from a select group of sensors, like inside the house. But still from outside if its after dark etc.
For the alarm, looking at the picture, it looks like you could use it for the alarm from a smoke detector or any devices that let out a loud alarm like a smoke detector.
I've got nine spread true the house. After I adopted them in Protect, Home Assistant can use them to trigger unlimited kinds of activities. Because of the UniFi sensors my home alarm is now really smart.
@@MactelecomNetworks I put it off for a long time and I finally did last month. Wish I did it so long ago. I absolutely love it and it's easier than you think.
@@Tetsuo90210 add the sensor in unifi. Then in home assistant go to settings- devices and services-add integration. And look up unifi and all your devices will be there after signing in/linking it.
Great informative video thanks. Im in the unifi eco system here in the uk. I think unifi have the alarm side of thing’s missing in their protect range. This may be a start of things to come. What I’d love to see is the ability to use existing wiring from the main alarm panel to the sensors into any new protect sensor. In which case if unifi came up with their own fully integrated protect alarm system. The user could simply remove the old panels and sensors and replace with the unifi system. Have an Ethernet connection from panel to UDM…. And you have a fully integrated alarm system in Protect.
This is kind of a head-scratcher for me. I have Unifi Protect with several cameras, and I love the system, but this seems half-baked. I want something turnkey with monitoring built-in, and this all-in-one sensor thing seems to raise the price point when you're only going to use 2-3 functions on each. I use several contact sensors - $59 each, And then you have to home brew monitoring? Maybe I don't understand. Now, if someone implements an affordable LoRa security system with monitoring, that'll get my attention.
Thanks Cody! Really appreciate the initial review. Curious what you will think in a few weeks. To me it raises a lot of questions about why Ubiquiti decided to package all of the sensors into one. I guess it's meant for alerting you of things when you aren't home. Maybe as a prompt to check your video feeds. It is very similar to the Ecobee Smart Sensor which I love... but more because it shuts off my AC when windows are open. Curious if they will add triggerable events. And as Christian also pointed out, yes the "Alarm" is to detect an alarm. If your smoke alarm goes off and you aren't home, it will let you know.
@@MactelecomNetworks great video! I'm super excited to get a couple of these. Been checking the US store daily for 2 months. I'll start checking the Canada store daily also.
Hi MN. Love your cover of the UI systems, it has help me a lot. Regarding the smart sensor, can it be used as a “normal” alarm system? We need a new alarm system at my workplace, and this might be it. But I can’t find any information on if you can use it as a regular alarm system. So, when we come to work and unlock the door with UI access, the alarm is turnoff. And when we leave and lock the door, we will receive notification if some one is inside the area where the sensors cover. There is a video in this if it can, because no one has covert that side of the sensor/system.
Greetings from Denmark. Thank you for all the great videos, Cody! Really appriciate it! Quick question, will these sensors work with the Dream Router? It not on the compatability list, but it's Wifi 6 and has bluetooth. So, maybe? Hope you can answer this. Keep up the good work, Jay.
I noticed this is not supported by the U6 Lite/LR early access models, any way to tell if we have a U6 Early Access device? Seems like they should explain how to tell the difference but they don't...
What would be nice is if I could overlay the info on the connected camera live

Hi Cody, Could you test, demonstrate how the leak sensor works? I searched but couldn't find a real test for this anywhere. Can it really be used to detect water leaks?
Unifi should advertise this as an Indoor Sensor, I put one out under a covered porch and at about 23 degrees F and lower it continuously is in a reboot loop, it is still showing the temp at 16 degrees but we will see how long the battery lasts. Pretty Lame that they did not put the operating temps on the webpage and for 50 bucks a pop it should be good for whatever temp you put it in.
So what all do i need to get so i can get them sensors on my door. I have Cloud Key Gen2 Plus now with 3 bullet cameras and two flex cameras. Thanks Dan
I installed one 3 days ago and it's dropped 18% already. I have the door sensor, humidity and temp sensors active. The sensor is about 5 feet from the AP.
@@jwfloorcovering8244 Thanks for your feedback, it doesn't seem quite right yet, the battery goes down really fast. I'll wait for further developments.
For the amount of things this sensor can detect it's a fair price compared to the competition. There are cheaper ones but they're usually zigbee ones limited to detecting a single thing, like smoke particles or motion.
@@MactelecomNetworks I hope they come out with an actual alarm. I currently have a complete ring alarm system with ringing cameras. I’m going to replace the cameras with UniFi. I guess I’ll keep the Ring portion for now.
"I have an issue with a UP Smart Sensor. All my devices are in different VLANs and the sensor won't detect any bridged device unless it's in the same VLAN. I don't understand why, since all the other devices can see each other. For example, I removed one of my Ubiquiti antennas from the VLAN for Wi-Fi and assigned it the security profile, and it was immediately detected there. Any suggestions or rules I should implement?"
why did they combine the accelerometer and window sensors into the unit. those would be much better as a cheaper standalone. I'm not buying a $75 sensor for every window just to get the magnet functionality.
If you are going to display your picture over the screen it be nice if you would not put over the menu heading when you have a blank upper right area where there is nothing
Hallo, Are these the only generation created by Ubiquiti, or are there others as well? Because in some photos, they have 3 small dots in the front, while some like these have 2 dots.
Watched your video a few times, and for the life of me I can not get my new sensor to show up in either the Android app and/or logged in on my computer. All of my APs on my UNVR show 'Available' and I have 1 x U6-LR and 3 x U6-Pro (all of which are APs that have Bluetooth). If anyone has ideas, it would be much appreciated.
I have mine set up. Is there not a way to get push notifications for when a door is opened? Seems a little pointless if not and I’ve looked everywhere in the settings both in the app and the web portal.
Plus every time you change the battery - which on at least one of the examples here will be frequently as even the software said the battery life will be short - you have to rip it off the wall. Pity they're not available wired.
I was thinking of getting these but curious on how good they are and how long the battery lasts. I understand it lasts based on how many options you check but does this mean that you will be changing batteries every couple of months? I would like to get some for my house but if the batteries die really fast might reconsider.
@@frankaugustin6224I have the nest detects which are the same thing (minus the alarm sound) and most batteries are like 2 years old and still no sign of slowing down.
So it has to be within 50ish feet of the Wi-Fi 6 AP? I want to grab some of these but I have to buy a new AP. But I want some of these on different floors. So if I have one in the basement, and want one on the upper level, I feel like I may have to get 2 AP’s to make sure they’re within 50 feet. Is that right?
Where do I find Unifi Protect? I have Unifi Express and Access Point U7 Pro and Unifi Sense. I cannot see how to adopt the Unifi sense in my network. I don't see a Unifi Protect tab anywhere. Please help. Thanks.
Express only runs Network and does not allow you to install Protect. You need a CloudKey Gen 2 or purchase a new gateway that will allow you to run multiple Unifi applications
Ok, I bought a max and installed protect. I updated the software but I cannot find how to adopt it. I go to Protect and then devices. It doesn't show up. :( And, I think this video is out of date since the software has changed and I cannot follow along.
They look identical to the google nest protect sensors, that google discontinued. I have them installed in my house. I wonder if ubiquity bought the patents to it.
Yay! More crap we can't buy! 90% of Ubiquiti's product is sold out with no indication of when it will be back. No support and no certification program. Right about now, I'm seriously concerned that they'll go out of business completely and I'll be stuck with a huge constellation of unsupported networking equipment.
This week they have released thousands of devices . You need to watch the Reddit page or just the webpage in general. They have training in the USA not sure how good it is though
@@MactelecomNetworks Thank you for the response, it means a lot. I can see that some p2p bridges and some unifi stuff came in. They even have stock of the old NSM5 right now; but I still don't see any edge equipment. No edge switches, most Unifi switches are out of stock. It worries me. Maybe I shouldn't freak out about it but frankly, my business depends on this equipment and it isn't easy at all to identify alternatives that do everything UI products do. Would you be able to post the Reddit link here?
UniFi RU-vid content creators should refrain from using the acronyms for the UniFi products. There's one sentence where you spent more time saying letters than actual words.
@@MactelecomNetworks 4:18 is a good example. I notice many IT creators doing this. Something we say in my field is "know your audience". You have many IT professionals that watch your channel I'm sure, but I'd imagine the majority are ubiquiti enthusiast such as myself. I have 6 UniFi switches and 5 APs at my house, but even I have a hard time following when so many acronyms for UniFi's products are used in the same sentence.
Why can't it have a normal battery.. wtf unifi. U guys are proprietary enough now the battery in a sensor... Really gana get every penny they can from someone..
It is a pricey battery none the less. And it gets kinda expensive if you're using several of these for doors and motion etc of doors. And kind of a PITA with random dead batteries
