In our latest virtual roundtable, Paul and I take a look at retired numbers, the policies some teams have that they routinely break, teams that retired numbers of players who never played for the team, our thoughts on unretiring a number for another player and much more. We also discuss the trio of NFL jersey leaks over the past week, a recap of the uniform oddity that was the 2021 NBA All-Star Game, Major League Baseball's new annual Lou Gehrig Day celebration, and of course, our listener question of the week.
Unified with Paul Lukas and Chris Creamer unites the uniform and sports logo worlds with co-hosts Chris Creamer of SportsLogos.net and Paul Lukas of Uni Watch.

I totally agree with the Ed Kranepool sentiment. An example of a team retiring the number of such a player is the Mavericks and Brad Davis.

Uniforms...The Denver Broncos (again) are a great example of a uniform change. When they changed to their latest design they won back-to-back championships in their first two years wearing them. Since having them, they have been to four Super Bowls winning three of them; however, I wouldn't mind seeing a different change to them...a few tweaks here and there and either an orange or a white helmet - even though I love the blue. Personally, I wouldn't mind seeing a few teams incorporate a white uniform as some of them could really pull it off. I think the Bengals would look better wearing either a predominately white or even a black helmet with the orange stripes. I'd love to see the NFL bring in multiple shells so the teams can be a little more creative with the uniform choices as the other major pro leagues are. Thanks for the episode gentlemen. Look forward to next week.

Nice plug for the MIAA--the conference of the college I attend--in the Homefield Apparel ad (Hope is the most hated rival of *every other school in the conference* because they are just so good.) Also, I bought a Columbus Chill shirt from Streaker to support you guys. Hopefully, I can get my dad to start listening when it comes (he has always been a Chill guy and hated the CBJ nickname, so he will love this shirt and I've been able to get him into uni watching as well, so if I can fit the pod and the code into the conversation he will be totally hooked.)

An interesting retired number situation is with the Islanders. Last year they decided to retire #27 for John Tonelli, but Captain Anders Lee was wearing the number. Tonelli ended up giving his blessing for Lee to wear 27.

Do you think Ryan Zimmerman would fit the criteria for a retired number? And when you were thinking of quarterbacks that have worn #12 - Brady.

One 'never-worn' example that puzzles me: The Utah Jazz retiring #1 for Frank Layden, a head coach that took them to... three second round exits and two first round exits, and was fired in midseason. I don't get how a coach who really didn't do much, would warrant a number taken out of circulation, nor do I understand the significance of why they chose the number 1 (first coach to take them to the playoffs???). The Celtics did have some grounds for retiring #1 for Walter Brown and #2 for Red Auerbach, the "first- and second-most important" members of their early dynasty.

How about double retired numbers like in the Montreal Canadiens with the numbers 5 (Geffion and Lapointe), 12 (Cournoyer and Moore) and 16 (Henri Richard and Lach)? For me, it's fine for teams with a large history.

The Denver Broncos had a similar situation a few years ago when they signed Peyton Manning and Frank Tripuka's family allowed Peyton to wear 18. I would agree that once the number is retired...IT STAYS RETIRED - unless that person comes out of retirement. Just like when a person 'retires' from their job, they stay retired unless they want to come out of it. I understand superstitions, favorite numbers, etc..., but if you are traded or sign with another team then respect the history of the new team's organization instead of thinking you are above it.

With great numbers come great responsibility. I'm thinking a famous movie line can come from this...

The question I've always had about retired numbers is what will a team do if and when all numbers 0 through 99 are eventually retired? Will they just recycle them and add another name to said number as future players' numbers are "re-retired", or will the team and or league move up to three digit jersey numbers? The Boston Celtics have the most retired numbers at 22, followed by the Yankees at 21. They're already one fifth of the way through their available numbers. It's only a matter of time until they run out.

The Yankees would need to retire 60 numbers before they're forced into considering a three-digit number, after 120 years they're only a third of the way there. At the current pace they'll hit this problem in the year 2261. We'll be fine.

The Angels have a dilemma with regards to a future retired number: 27. It's currently worn by the best player in the game and future Hall of Famer and all-time great Mike Trout, but previously worn by Hall of Famer Vladimir Guerrero, who was inducted into the Hall with an Angel cap. Why the team's equipment manager or marketing person did not forsee this as a problem down the line is beyond me. Vlad has also been inducted into the Angels' Hall of Fame and one would assume that his status in Cooperstown would warrant his number to be retired along with the likes of Nolan Ryan and Rod Carew. What do you do in this situation? Retire the number twice after Trout calls it a career? Have Trout change numbers a la Kobe and end up with that number retired?

Also Unified speaking of retired numbers you should look into the Packers retired numbers as there was a debate on if 1,3,5,14,15 and 66 were actually retired until Lambeau was renovated in 2003 when 3,14,15 and 66 was displayed in the stadium. All of those numbers were either given out or had the equipment manager not handing out the number

I’m with Paul, I hate that new NFL jerseys don’t have tv numbers! So disappointing! Would be cool if the 49ers wore silver helmets with those throwbacks, same with Browns with a white helmet. I’m hoping see my Bucs wearing the creamsicles.

The Toronto Maple Leafs (with the exception of Ace Bailey) used to honour the numbers players but not retire them. That's why both Turk Broda and Johnny Bower both wore the number 1. I actually liked that system better. The player isn't bigger than the team, and players could "pass down" or "inherit" numbers. Putting up a banner is fine, but not taking the number out of circulation. Sadly the Leafs now have retired numbers.

In 2010 Omar Vizquel wore #11 for the White Sox even though the number was retired by the team in 1984 for Luis Aparicio, was issued at the request of Omar Vizquel

How do you feel about School Wide retirements in college and how do you feel about numbers in college like Syracuse lacrosse #22 that aren’t awarded every year, but only when they get a “chosen one” type of player?

I hate teams that retire numbers that were not worn like number 6 by the Magic, Kings for the sixth man. Here in Detroit the Pistons retired number 2 for head coach Chuck Daly in honor of his 2 NBA championships, when in reality they just needed to hang a banner to the rafters with his name like they did for former GM Jack McCloskey and owner William Davidson. I hate when teams unretire numbers, it really cheapens them honor, just pick a new number, only time I find it acceptable is if the offspring of that player, like the Cavs with Larry Nance Jr. wearing his dads number 22. Also would like see how many times a team unretired a number and that worked out for the team winning a championship or the player having success. I can’t really think of an example of a number being unretired and that working out.

I am hoping the Blackhawks retire the numbers for Marian Hossa 81, Corey Crawford 50 and Seabrook/Chelios 7 because they all ment so much for the Chicago Blackhawks.

I am a bigger fan of retiring jerseys not numbers. Kansas basketball is a perfect example. You walk in and you see all those numbers in the rafters. Then there's no grey lines on people who are on the edge because if they have the history and were a huge part of your team put them up there! The Vikings Ring of Honor is another good example.

The NFL should try to stop retiring numbers similar to what the cowboys have done and try to avoid issuing certain numbers, it’s difficult for the NFL due to the numbering system for certain position rules

I think the NFL due to limited numbers due to a number system for positions should stop retiring numbers and just rarely reissue a significant player in their history’s number
