Love your videos, Thabo and this one really tops the list. Very, very useful! You trying things for the first time is very inspiring and motivates me to get off my arse and sort my trucks out too. The funny thing is, we use the same swear words when we are working on our trucks!

"Don't we need to fill it with oil first?" "We do, but I want to make sure it fits first." A smarter man than I! I'd probably fill it first, realise I didn't assemble it properly, and then make a massive mess.

Good job lads! I think our U1300L has some generic oil in the gearbox and I’ve heard that the Syntrans is a good oil to make the shifting smoother, so I’m looking forward to changing it, however, I’m not looking forward to buying 20l of all the oils. 😁👍🏻👍🏻 Thanks for the video, and sad to see the negative vibes you got on FB. Keep the videos coming!

Agreed on the FB vibes Jocke. I've done around 100 k's on my 1300 and the challenge is not so much in changing the oils but more so as to where you will be doing it. At least 50% of mine was done on the road and in the bush. You will need to have the dump bucket and basic hand pumps on hand to do this (and keep that messy stuff stored somewhere) plus keep the old oils contained until you can responsibility dispose of it. Syntrans is very expensive stuff and if you had something else in the gearbox previously you will likely want to replace it twice to flush out what what was in there originally. Thanks for the steering info Thabo, I've not done that ever. On the to-do list now. The website is datateck.com.au. Search for Unimog (of course)

@@MichielBrandOUTofDOORS Oh, definitely not looking forward to doing the gearbox oil change twice! 🤣 I don't think I've ever changed any oils or any other vehicle fluids without making a mess. A few old cardboard boxes folded flat makes a good spill cover, IMO. Tons of rags, shop tissues, and degreaser, cleaners, etc, helps. 😎👍🏻 For some reason the link you provided went somewhere completely different. www.datateck.com.au/lube/castr_au/ - that one worked for me.

@@JockeSelin I think I've got it down to a fine art by now. Buy the engine oil in 5L lots (~15 Lt required for the 352, not sure about the 366). Diff and portals in 4Lt lots (~6 Lt needed). Engine and portals every 5th ks absolutely. Takes about 4 handsize rags in cleanup. For the portals, cut a small plastic bottle top off to use as a drain. Engine oil dump needs a 20 Lt drum and no wind blowing. Dump the old 20 Lt's back into the 5 Lt containers for disposal. Diffs I do every 20-25 th ks and gearbox "should" last 40-50 th ks. (I've had to do it more frequently due to "blowout" leakage from 4x4 engagement/pressurisation/seal issues)
@JockeSelin
@JockeSelin 3 года назад
Michiel Brand Brilliant advice there. I really should write all that down. I thought you could only get Syntrans in 20l drums?
@MichielBrandOUTofDOORS
@MichielBrandOUTofDOORS 3 года назад
@@JockeSelin In Oz that is quite rare (20Lt) unless you are a Castrol "affiliate". 1 Lt bottles at ~ AUD$ 30 ea is the norm and it takes a while to get enough together for a oil change as most auto shops only hold around 4 to 6 in floor stock. As I said...an expensive exercise.

I like to use 6 point sockets rather than 12 point. They grip the bolts much better for less of a chance of rounding them off.

Thanks for your video. I have a question on minute 19:11, i see yellow things on your lug nuts. May i know what it is? I have an experience when my rear wheel's lug nut came loose. I just wondering, can it help. Many thanks

It is just a tell tale. My mog has the same things but green! They just show if a nut is coming loose, they don't stop them coming loose. The driver does a daily check of those tell tales.

11:00 if it's cold outside, then warming up oil is not a bad idea, but a minute is too small interval and as said it will just spread it. So drive a bit, like few miles, or after a short drive, like 15 minutes at least till the oil is on normal temperatures and let it stand still for like 2 hours .. it should be still warm enough to be plenty liquid, but settled a bit in oil pan. Plus engines in those 1700 series uses oil and another bit is that there is a lot of oil. So bothering with perfectly drained oil till the last drop is useless. Flushing with some special stuff seems to me as from the same useless category. Unless the previous oil is normal, liquid and not some 50Y old gunk, I would not bother too much.

Weirdly enough it says so... But the stress in a transmission is completely different from an engine. The Workshop manual states 80W or 85W for the trans. Very different to 15W-40 for the engine.

@@ThaboNelmeanshappiness In Germany you aren't even allowed to wash your car at home because of Oil. You need an Oil Seperator in the ground :D In driving school they teached us 1 drop of oil contaminates 1000l of fresh water, ont sure if thats accurate but everyone gets the point 😁 But love your videos, time to get the Unimog 411 of my grandpa running :)

No mate, it is not (with some common sense applied of course). However, new copper washers are certainly recommended every time. Which, by the way is assumed on the torque spec.
