A week after a deadly ship fire broke out at Port Newark, union officials representing the city's firefighters allege that Mayor Ras Baraka's administration has for years failed to adequately invest in the Newark Fire Division. The allegations include failure to properly staff the division, keep firefighting equipment in working order and properly maintain firehouses.

Newark has been cutting fire companies for years. There apparatus fleet is old and the apparatus are always the lowest quality. It shows the city does not take emergency services as a priority.

As i was told by career firefighters, fighting a fire on a ship is completely different. Of course hose, water, and manpower remains the same but actual fire attack and extinguishment is a completely another animal. I certainly thought that Newark, having one of the largest shipping ports, would have well trained firefighters and necessary fire fighting equipment for such an event. Also, listening to the radio traffic, it seemed to be all over the place without one command. Here in Cincinnati, fire departments are trained in "unified command" keeping control of the fire ground and its resources on scene and those staged. Just one mans two cents worth. Prayers for the firefighters and family members during this tragic time ... Godspeed to all Sisters and Brothers.

This was an elite fire department. Politics is ruining it. Newark is responsible for structural fires at both port Newark and Newark international airport. The port authority is responsible for actual aircraft fires, as it is in LaGuardia and Kennedy airports. Ship fires should either be fought by the municipalities that the port is in or by the port authority. A decision must be made. But this does not address the poor training, the closing of fire companies, poor maintenance and understaffing along with the constant drumbeat of diversity hiring and promotions over the main goal of protecting its citizens, people who work in the city and travel on its massive road and rail network. Politics in the City of Newark in my opinion, based on what I hear and see does not consider fire safety as a high priority. Don’t allow these men to die in vain. Hold those who have run this department into the ground accountable, and rebuild the NFD into the elite department it once was.

The firefighters had little no training on how to fight a fire on this type of ship - carrying thousands of cars. Not fair.

First the mayor’s disrespectful shell game isn’t fooling anyone. The first largest port is the Port of Long Beach, Ca and they have a Port Authority FD with boats comparable to the FDNY. Why does the NY/NJ PA not have a full time FD? Ship ports, airports, tunnels, bridges, bus terminals, need a full time, highly trained firefighting force. They can then train Newark and FDNY to aide on incidents. Besides that why didn’t NJ use homeland security funds to get Newark, Jersey City, Hoboken, and the Port Authority each a large fire boat like NYC has to protect the whole region?

We’re post 9/11 and NJ state government failed to revamp their emergency services training and response. Specialized firefighting for ships in one of the largest ports in America should have been a question asked 30 years ago, not after a tragedy strikes and local firefighters die. Where was the PA of NYNJ all these decades? Why wasn’t there a contingency plans and state and federal funds allocated for specialized training to designated first responders?

I love how the Firefighters union uses fear, guilt and public sympathy to get more and more out of the taxpayers. It's time to take a look a closer look at Fire Dept's and what they really do with their time and how much downtime they actually have? I know of many Firefighters who have second careers because they sleep at the fire station all night and are fresh in the morning to go out and take on other jobs if they want. There is a whole other side they don't tell the taxpaying public.

What an awful vile person you are. How deeply un-empathetic, unpatriotic, and insulting do you have to be to hear a fire department, who lost two members, call for more resources to ensure a tragedy is not repeated, and your first comment is to say they do nothing. Your stupidity fails to see the hypocrisy so clearly in front of you, they died doing a job in the act of service to the public. A public whos government fails to staff, train, and provide enough resources like oh so many governments across this nation. Are you willing to die for that? Die knowing that if your department had more funding/ more training this could have been avoided?

Yea. But you sound crazy. Down time is a thing. But I will say this. Firefighters don’t get paid for WHAT they do. But what they’re WILLING to do. It’s a dangerous job. My uncle was a firefighter. The stories aren’t often but man are they crazy
@Dbodell8000
@Dbodell8000 Год назад
@@coolhuman2009 The reality is compared to many other jobs Firefighters have a very low death rate. Unfortunately many of these other jobs receive little to no glory placed on them like the Firefighters do. It is only because of the media who glorify Firefighters every chance they get is why the public have such a misinformed view of it all. More people die from bee stings in North America each yr than Firefighters who get killed on the job. Imagine if the media highlighted each time a construction worker was killed on the job you would be reading about their deaths constantly. If you want to compare numbers just research how many people die in car crashes each year compared to Firefighter fatalities yet most people don't consider driving their cars hazardous. Sadly as I said before the media decide who gets glorified and who gets ignored.

Port Authority needs to have a dedicated, specifically trained full-time fire dept at the port. That should be law. Then, they should train WITH the NFD and surrounding FD's. Fighting a ship fire is not like fighting a structure fire.

Let's tell the truth here, they have been lowing the standards for the Newark Fire Department since the eighties so what do you think is going to happen ? Perfect example is Fire Chief Rufus Jackson, is he qualified to be the Fire Chief, you tell me. The statement he made that Newark Fire only was trained for passenger ship fires was a joke, a passenger ship never docked in Port Newark. It's a container port. A city like Newark needs a minority at the head. IT'S sad but true 😯
