Union Pacific - Railroading - A Way of Life

This 31-minute video was disseminated on VHS to Union Pacific operating department employees in 1990 and discusses the 24-hour nature of the industry and how railroaders are affected by the unpredictable work schedules common in this industry. Even today, in spite of new rest rules imposed by the "Rail Safety Improvement Act" of 2008, much of what is discussed in this video still applies. Sorry for the quality, this is a VHS conversion.

This 1989 video was produced in Salt Lake City by the Union Pacific Railroad Desert Wind Safety Committee. It featured Operating Department Train and Engine employees and spouses from Salt Lake and Las Vegas.

Where I worked at, the guys in the pool turns wanted to be in the pool. That's where the BIG money is. Hell when I hired out, the YOUNGEST man in the pool had 20 years on the job. A new-hire couldn't even get a whiff of a pool turn. Those old heads could have taken a switch engine if they wanted to. But they chose not to because of the big money in working a pool turn.

Hi there, very interesting video and a very difficult subject too but it is obvious that expert along with the medical and the railroad communities are trying there best to resolve the problem, it is just impossible to resolve it or to reach an agreement, you actually see the contradiction going on this video, so the question is, how do we solve the problem this video is trying to present?, at this point there is no solution, the only way to solve the problem (and this is my opinion only) is to run trains at night with pilotless only (or autonomous} locomotive and the conductor with train engineer (or humans) will run the trains (or take over) during the day, or (the other way) again conductors along with train engineers will run the train at night !ONLY" and the pilotless (or autonomous train) will take over during the day again "ONLY", this at least will have humans working one shift only, "DAY or NIGHT" (but only one) and allow people to sleep and take care family or other personal problems I think this will be a win-win situation. Technology has made possible for full size train to run from point A to point B without the assistant of the conductor or train engineer (check out the RU-vid video: Mining corporation Rio Tinto, Australia, the worlds first autonomous train to run almost 80 miles with out human assistant fully load it) now at this point of course many concern people and I mean many have said to me; "well, what`s next autonomous trains running day and night with out humans? I must admit it is a very difficult subject, seems to be more question than answers but then again it seems the same problem with what`s going on in this video more questions and concerns but no answer, the point is, people need to work during the day and sleep during the night in this industry and while we are on the subject what about the police, the fire dept. or the hospital (nurses and doctors) is it possible to have an autonomous team capable of taking over and more important make the correct decision as we humans can, for example arrest the wrong person or put out the fire at the wrong house and so on, I mean imagine a world where we can have a secure good paying job or career while at the same time are able to sleep at night with out interruption, take care family affair and not worried about losing your job or paying bills.

If they take your advice, the workers will have PLENTY of time to sleep. The "robots" will be running not just the trains at night but in the daytime as well. And the workers will be out of a job. Your plan sounds nice in theory. But it won't fly without putting humans out of work.
