The world's biggest steam locomotive, Union Pacific's Big Boy No. 4014, pulled into Hays, Kansas on Nov. 21 and stayed overnight, drawing big Kansas and Nebraska crowds. People got an up-close look at the 1.2 ton historic engine that UP restored to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the transcontinental railroad. I agree there’s nothing better than seeing the big boy 4014 going through the snow. That is a very big powerful steam locomotive 🚂 it is really awesome. I also really love ❤️ the sound of the whistle as well.

as soon as Ed thinks he wont blow the piston backing out of those cylinders, beat all the bearings to death on the rods and valve gear- no one knows how much wear and tare this locomotive can take,once they figure the wear rates on those major parts, the fun will begin. no one is alive anymore that maintained these beasts nor did anyone write it down.

lol true. Looking at the biggest British loco (the 2-10-0 9F) it’s pretty big for British railways, but then there’s the overseas 2-12-0 locomotives and that’s just massive.

Nah fam, they're still seeing how much wear the engine can take. If all goes well we can see 4014 hauling large freights after some repairs.

I lived in the wrong time. Should have lived in the first half of the 20th century. Steam trains, classic cars (what we call them now), vacuum tube radios. Religion, moral values, family, friends were all important. No computers or iPhones. People weren't falling off cliffs to get a selfie.

Well sort of. This is a weird Winter going on! I mean I live in the Midwest, and normally there would be at least SOME snow on the ground. All we really have is alot of rain! But then I don't have to shovel rain!😄

You have an error: the Big Boy is over 604 tons (1.2 million lbs). That's 548,300 kg, for you metric folk.

It's just there to act as a generator to power all of the coaches. It's also there as a backup in case something happens to the steam locomotive, I'm not a fan either tho.

@@fp7026 I think the diesel is used for dynamic braking. Required for safety reasons and saves wear and tear on the brake shoes.

They’re testing its wear and tear levels by using a mixed consist (both passenger and freight) so they can tell how hard they can still push the Big Boy.

I think that’s only in case the Big Boy breaks down somewhere, this is standard procedure with restored steamers. We don’t want what happened with SP&S 700 where a leaking valve caused it to stop working and they didn’t have a backup, so they used an old tunnel motor from the BNSF.
