The Summer 96 capsule collection is a three way collaboration between Jordan, Bephies Beauty Supply (BBS) and Union. The inspiration behind the design is actually centered around how my wife (Bephie from BBS) and I (Chris from Union)first met. We met in the Summer of 1996 In Fort Greene Brooklyn. The Climate Around That Time Was Unique; Streetwear As We Know It Was In It’s Early Infancy. Hip Hop Was Transitioning From The Underground To Becoming The Preeminent Pop Music That It Has Become Today And Brooklyn Was Still A Best Kept Secret. Fashion Was A Reflection Of The Times...
The Year Prior Larry Clarks “Kids” Releases And The World At Large Is Introduced To The Counter Culture Youth Angst Of Nyc. That Year The Fugees Album, “The Score” Dropped And We Are Witness To The Tipping Point Of African American Culture Crossing Over To American Pop Culture, For The First Time Without Having To Be Watered Down. ...And We Are A Couple Months Removed From Badusim Dropping, Which Will Show America, And Really The World The Soulful Afrocentricity And A “Rebirth Of Cool”.
Summer 96’ Is a “His & Hers” capsule collection That Pays Homage To The Summer We Met, And As We Look Back At It Now, We Realize This Summer Was Not Only The Foundation Of Our Relationship But Also The Precursor To The Lifestyle Movement We Now Call “Streetwear”. Except Back Then, Streetwear Was Just The Youth Rebelling Against The Status Quo And Expressing Their True Individuality.
Brooklyn, More Specifically, Fort Greene Was Extremely Bohemian Back Then And Very Afrocentric. This Being The Beginning Of Streetwear, There Were A Lot Of Small Designers On The Scene Who Were Making Very Artisanal More “DIY” Apparel. Everything Had A Tilt Of Afrocentricity To It. Beth And I Were Part Of This Scene And For The “Summer 96” Capsule We Wanted To Reminisce On This. Of Coarse, It Ain’t The 90’s No More..So We Wanted To Do A Capsule That Is Inspired By Our Genesis Meeting But Brings Us Into Today. We Want To Mix Old School Ideas With A Contemporary Eye And Fabrication Technique…

Summer of 96 is when Chris met Beth. Its a deeper meaning of love for both of them especially with the woven material. That was the point. Something that tells their love story fused into the love of the Jordan 1 silhouette which is loved by many. Fire pair of kicks

These had to grow on me as well. I hated the first images of them, but began to love them over time. I ended up copping a pair. The leather is so buttery soft. I think they're very underrated right now.

Good idea. Come to think of it, a Jordan 11 with a fully woven panel instead of patent leather might have been dope. Personally, I went the opposite way with these compared to you. I loved these when I first saw them because they looked weird, the story was so-so, and as the release got closer, I realized I’m not giving up anything I have to make room for these. And I’d probably not wear it much. So come release day, easy pass.

But I dont think the 11 was possibly as personal to Bethie or Chris in 96 like the Footscape or the Jordan 1 so it wouldnt make that much sense

I actually think the women's Elevate one is a little better looking, though that one seems way more difficult to style. Both of them are amazing though. Nautica-Win jacket is looking good too 👌🏻

I love the shoe. I'm glad some stayed away and allowed people who really like it an opportunity to buy on their site. The clothing line was also pretty damn good. I copped a backup so i can customize... the Bred conversion is 🔥🔥🔥

I think they are dope, glad I had no issue picking up a pair from Union. Let people sleep on em, its all good. People say they want something different, and they did it, so I appreciate the uniqueness and letting the woven material speak, not the colors

Nice shout out to Eddie Win, he had by far the least amount of subs and views back in the sneaker youtuber boom days, probably because he never bought into the hype and clickbait stuf.. Slowly grinded and now has a Nautica collab. Inspiring really.

I love that this video brings up a great point: no one has ever touched the AJ11. I wonder if it’s that no one has the nerve to do it, if no one has any decent ideas, or if the shoe just doesn’t loan itself very well to anything interesting. If they age it, people will say that it’s lazy. If they change any of the few staples of the shoe, people will cry blasphemy. I’m really torn as to what could be done, you can’t even really deconstruct them either. I think the self-lacing version is about as close to an outside the box approach as we’ll ever get (materials, colors, etc.).

Bro they hold Jordan 11 sacred, they not gonna let people do collabs on that model. Never have & never will probably. Only a few Jordan 11 Collabs. You should know that. The Summer of 96 is because that when Chris from Union met his wife who runs Bethie's Beauty Supply.

But I guess the "summer of 96" for Chris and his wife is the idea of when they met and both of their favorite shoes (AJ1 and footscape woven)? Either way I am also still not 100% with the shoes. Hopefully you can make a custom to make it better, would be a great vid.
