I've been curious about these guitars for a long time, and now I finally get to play one! At only $239, this guitar is extremely affordable, while also being unique, and built to a high standard of quality. With an Ash body, brass hardware, and a relic style finish, this guitar will turn some heads and sound good doing it.
As I mention in the video... this exact model is from a few years ago and the current model of this guitar comes with a vintage style trem instead of the wraparound bridge. See the link below for the different models available.

I like the "no tone knob" deal with these guitars, and if they came "undistressed", I would already have one, just because I'm an Earl Slick fan. Phantom, Rocker and Slick was an awesome sound at the time, and still is. Even this century the guy has been doing good stuff. Way underrated.

@MichaelCarey: Phantom, Rocker, and Slick was a great band. Don't know why they didn't get the recognition they deserved. There are so many elements to a music career, that it can be something as stupid as the drummer screwed the label exec's girl before he became an exec and now he can destroy the cat. Glad I'm not the only guy who remembers them. I live in LA, and by Van Nuys airport, many bands have warehouses/ rehearsal spaces...I was at a diner there back in the day, and who should come walking in but the three of them in all their Rock n roll regalia...Wanted to talk with them, but they all looked pissed off, so I just gave them the head nod of recognition as I walked out. I think Im gonna get me a Slick geetar..., I already have two GF basses!

It's awesome that you're checking these guys out! I have a couple of Xavieres that I found to be of shockingly good value despite the price. The 2 that I would suggest are either the PRO820, which is a basic Tele copy, as well as the XV-825, the "Keef" model. That one's very cool- it has a mini humbucker in the neck position- great on its own, or the right routing for a P90. Both are tele style, but I can say, I think there is a ton of value in the Xaviere line.

I love bare bones guitars like this. I'm currently playing a couple of old 80's era Yamaha SE150's that are almost exctally like this, same exact shape, one humbucker in the bridge and one volume pot, painted headstock, etc, less options than even a Telecaster. I'm allergic to options! I'll consider one of these for sure. Also have a Strat with a set of the GFS quickplug Goldfoils installed.

I purchased a SL54T from Guitar Fetish about two months ago. It is the same guitar except it has a vintage style 6-screw tremolo (with brass saddles and block). I don't think the non-tremolo version is available any longer and there are only two colors in stock for the SL54T currently: Black Ash and Vintage Sunburst. I have the Black Ash and I love it. Instead of a relic finish like the one you reviewed, the Black Ash is stained and has no clear coat or sanding for relic effect. With its unfinished neck, tilt back headstock and minimalist design, this guitar gave me flashbacks to my old Kramer Baretta that was stolen many years ago. It was the original one from the 80's that was endorsed by the Guitar God himself: RIP EVH. The Baretta had a Floyd Rose locking trem but they are such a PITA. I was glad this guitar had an old school trem instead and of course a Floyd Rose would've raised the price significantly. I swear the stock Alnico V 9.2K pickup in the SL54T is much better than the stock one I had in my old Baretta which I replaced with a Seymour Duncan JB back in the day. I had planned to replace the pickup in this one with another JB, but I'm holding off on that because of how much I like the sound of this one. I was also really impressed with the setup and fret dressing of this guitar. Not at all what I expected for a $240 guitar. The frets were polished and dressed nicely. My only complaint about the guitar is that the tuners aren't the best, but I replaced them with locking tuners as I usually do on all my guitars. After a $60 set of D'Addario Auto-Trim Locking tuners (which are awesome btw), I'm very happy with my $300 guitar.
@bluwng

Nice. Slick guitars tend to have big frets is that the case here? I love big giant frets but no budget guitars use them. Jackson SL have big frets but those headstocks are a nightmare for tuning when you use the tremolo, and I do.

Hey Max. Love the GuitarFetish stuff, very different and a site I think many people are interested in. Got some of their PAF style pickups back in the day which did a great job on my Epiphone Les Paul Custom to help give it a bit more bite to the sound. But I'd be really interested if you got some of their gear and made a build out of their gear (particularly their XGP bodies and necks that look ready to go). The video you did back with guns and guitars was one of the best and I think revisiting the build concept with just GFS stuff could give an overall look at their range of stuff for us guitar nuts. Cheers

My first guitar as a Teenager was an HH Telecaster Clone, in Metallic Red. Loved that thing. Over time the electronics gave way, things started falling apart. I replaced pretty much everything but the wood with Guitar Fetish Parts for ~175 - 200, and LOVE the way it plays. I had a local luthier go over the neck (I'm not that brave, yet), and I'd put this bad boy up against anything in terms of a Rock Machine. Maybe you could do that. Take some Off the rack super cheap guitar (the Lady Luck cost me $149 in the early 90's), and replace all the bargain bin parts with GF Parts, and give it a whirl.

One of favorite guitars in my collection is an Earl Slick model by Phantom Guitars. It's an amazing player and pretty barebones for an 80's guitar...one humbucker and a kahler trem. When I picked it up he said he was pleasantly surprised and told me that it sounded great. Like the guitar Max reviewed, it is crazy heavy for a strat-style guitar and is really loud acoustically. I bought a Slick Tele in February. It's made out of swamp ash and fender parts are interchangeable. The pick ups sucked, the frets ends needed to be filed, and I had to adjust the neck. I replaced the pickups with Nocasters and did all neck stuff myself. NOW i have a guitar that sounds as good as any Fender Custom Shop and plays better than several custom shop Tele's that I've pickup. I knew going in I would have to do some work, that was actually a selling point at $250, if I ruined it so what. Now I LOVE LOVE LOVE this guitar. I also changed the controller. Not sure if that had to go or not but for $100 it was worth it. Oh yea I also learned how to work on a guitar too. If you want an inexpensive relic and you like working on guitars definitely buy one, or two or three

They sent me a guitar that was incredibly poorly put together, and gave me shit about giving me a discount on the guitar when I had photographic evidence of the horrid work done on it. I also find the hyperbole in their marketing a bit off putting.

@@TheDmonet That sucks that happened to you and if i had the same experience I'd probably wouldn't shop with them either. I do remember that the tremolo on the jazzmaster broke immediately after first time use, so that was a bummer. And their descriptions for their products are pretty cringeworthy indeed, lol. At very least I can vouch for their pickups which are excellent for the price.

@@reverbautopsy9093 There pickups are decent. The guitar they sent me I couldn't get the strings out of when I tried to change them. They were stuck at the bridge. WTF? So I took the bridge off, and found gaping holes underneath where someone had drilled or chiseled incredibly sloppy string through holes. It's obvious the bridge was misaligned on install and they tried to "fix it", or they asked a Chimpanzee to fix it and he failed. After their initial refusal to do anything but accept a return with a RESTOCKING CHARGE, and warning them that they were creating an enemy who wasn't going to get ripped off without a fight, I put the pictures up on thegearpage forum, and many facepalms were had. After that they offered to take 15 % off or something. I cut my losses after that. If you are going to market yourself as selling gear that is worth WAY MORE than any $200 guitar out there, and then when you are exposed for being full of shit on at least one occasion, the least you can do is something to keep your customer quiet about how full of shit you are, not initially tell them "tough luck". That's my story, and it's all true.

@@TheDmonet Nah, I believe you and you're right. That's some atrocious customer service right there.

I never saw an adjustable wraparound bridge. Cool! You probably will be shocked what the price is at Guitarfetish.

I have one of their Tele clones from their other line of guitars (Xaviere), and I've been very impressed. Their pickups are top-notch for the price

That brass wraparound bridge is really great i have it in a harley benton dc junior fat and the guitar is much better now, more sustain and great tone.

Just got one of these used for around $100. It's unbelievably good for that amount of cash. It plays as good as my telecaster that costs around $2000.

I have 3 of those Slick SL-54 guitars in my guitar collection!!! I got them really cheap for $189 back in 2014 when those guitars first came out on GuitarFetish!!! They are pretty good guitars for that price point!!! I was shocked and quite impressed when I first got hold of a Slick guitar!!! I like the one humbucking pick up and one volume knob Stratocaster guitar body configuration!!! Simple guitars work best for me!!! Nothing to get in the way of my creativity! Its like a hot rod guitar right out of the box!!! If your a player that could care less about fancy looks and fancy paint jobs this is your guitar! Also. These guitars make good platforms for modifying or learning the basics on guitar repair!!! 🙂☺😊☺ The guitars sound amazing!!! You may have to make adjustments to the bridge or adjust the action a bit depending on your own playing style!!! I am more of a rhythm player and not much of a shredder or virtuoso on lead guitar!!! So this guitar suits my needs perfectly!!! Its so cheap!!! I can spend more money on getting a good quality guitar amp !!! ( EVH 5150 iii or a Mesa Boogie or a Soldano)!!!! Or a Marshall JVH!!! Those amps are very pricey!!!
