I actually think that most of the cons of this capsule hotel stem from the fact that it's at the airport. So you can assume there's 24/7 people going in and out at all times of the day and night.

The bad thing about capsule hotels during summer is definitely that it may be a little warm, although I am rn in one that is really nicely climatized. But about noise, I am used to noise by a lot of different things so I always had great sleep and if people are nice, they won't make the alarm too loud. One capsule hotel I stayed at, even forbid making an alarm and you could write your name and desired wakeup time in a list and the owner woke me up so that's a nice idea. The best thing is definitely though that I am not eager to stay inside for long and thus see more of the city

for those considering capsule hotels - also note that this was at an airport, where people will be coming in and out pretty often as they arrive and depart on flights. you may have people making noise in their capsule late at night in a capsule hotel in the city, but typically the foot traffic will lessen after dark. also consider requesting a capsule furthest from the entrance as you will get less foot traffic

@CrustedPork
@CrustedPork Год назад
Most people stay at capsule hotels NOT in the airport area. So most people don't experience this. If you go to ones in normal parts of town/cities and go later at night you won't have nearly any foot traffic (you can also request a capsule furthest away from the entrance) the only thing you'd still have to deal with is alarms in the AM because people will wake up anytime from 3am-8am typically. That is hands down the biggest downside if other alarms bother you or wake you. As a previously homeless person who was homeless with quite a few vets I've learned some neat tricks and also just gotten used to sleeping in the most noisy/sketchy areas anyway so sleeping in a place like this would be heaven.

I think it depends on country too. If like Japan, I think they have higher standards? Not everywhere is similar. Depends on luck too? I've been to one before. Oh my. The noise. The smell. The ventilation. The cleanliness. People talking over the phone... Alarm clock ringing very early... Even a door close, the sound seems amplified. Because the space is very small.

I stayed in several capsule hotels in Aus while I was travelling there. I actually enjoyed all of them, although I had also stayed in a few regular hostels on that trip and had previously been living on a 50ft boat with 3 other people for over three months so maybe my experience of the capsule hotels was skewed a bit. That one you are staying in looks pretty primo compared to the ones I stayed in as well. I didn't notice them being hot and stuffy, but again, small boat, tropical heat, and no AC probably made the barely air conditioned capsule hotels feel downright comfortable by comparison. Love your guy's content, you were some of the people that inspired me to go on that trip in the first place!

@Broccolily
@Broccolily Год назад
to be honest i didn't find Japan the most accessible on my first trip - but i also had no idea what to expect! some aspects are actually essier than here in Australia, others were new and challenging. I was surprised there were so few public benches for example. but then again a disabled person visiting australia might not be aware of the options we have if they arent well advertised 🤷 its tricky, and many disabilities (like mine) are not stable, they fluctuate. One day i could do a huge walk, another i cant walk much at all. This seems to be a common experience in my disabled community
@inmyshoeswheelsoptional9848
As also an Australian we are the worst country especially for access but also the mentality to disabilities is SOOO immature compared to other counties... Not to mention like zero access to services for most now thanks to NDIS(which has caused numerous deaths but that's never talked about to the public)... Mine also fluctuate in similar way(I also have a cardiovascular condition which causes syncope & seizures if I stand= no blood getting to my brain sometimes too) tho I am pretty much mostly stuck to cane & chair now due to nerve damage getting worse. Literally cannot count on both hands & feet how often there's "disabled parking" that isn't near the entry/exit, not big enough to fit a chair next to my door. "Ramps" that I literally need help walking up/tip my chair over. Or 9/10 there's no ramp or parking or even no elevator when there's a tonne of stairs. Often I have to just stay in the car or it can take like an hour to get to the place in a building I need(but more often I end up in medical emergency due to my heart& seizure condition)... But every other country from other disabled folks I've heard is NOTHING close to Australia. Nearly most food places have all the chairs ages from the counter so my carer/mum, literally to kinda give them the finger, goes over & rips a chair up & places it at the counter so I can order. As otherwise I literally can't order if I'm not in my wheelchair that day 😂... Don't even get me started on the amount of times my mum & I have been screamed at for using a disabled spot "how dare we"... With a pass & my literal wheelchair in the back "because i look too young/healthy to be disabled" & it's more common in Aus than anywhere else ive heard. But yet never see ppl lose their shit when an old person takes the spot without a pass 😢, when especially desperately need them when I've got the wheelchair. Like I literally have to go out with my mum/carer because of all these reasons & more incase of no access/thoughts of access etc for disabiled peeps/or I'm literally verbally(sometimes physically because people think it's okay to literally touch me because Im "young" or push my wheelchair where they often literally injure me by shoving it into a wall or door because "I'm in their way" or "they thought I needed help")... & again dont hear it being anywhere this bad in other countries from other spoonies. Defs is part of it I NEVER see true disability representation in Aus media. Like still remember one time when on the front page of a paper it had the tennis & someone in a wheelchair standing to clap for it & the title being "winning score @ tennis so amazing it cures disabilty" or some BS like that. Like I don't get how out country forgets only around 10% of all wheelchair users are actually fully paralysed from waist down. Especially this day & age to point people do hate pages on ppl like me saying Im faking, because I can walk sometimes but use a wheelchair most of the time 🤦‍♀️. Like disability isn't progressive & not sudden 9/10 times, especially when its caused by a chronic illness/condition/genetic condition like MOST disabled folks & not that all disabled people "look" disabled like people in sudden accidents losing a limb 🤯. So yeh Def's feel Ur pain. I've heard good things from Japan tho from other disabled folks, esp compared to Aus, but many still recommend going with a friend or family or carer just incase you might need help with access or other issues, but the culture is FAR more respectful & understanding of disabiled folks & their access etc, that's for sure.

Although i tend to run mine on a powerbank & hang it on the edge of my utility cart. Its basically more like a regular fan except much smaller & portable if you have a power bank.m

My solution to the noise would probably be to take advantage of the free wifi and sleep with an 8 hour sleep music video playing on low-ish volume to 'cancel' the worst of the noise from other guests. Just keep the phone plugged to charge, so it's ready to go in the morning, and it's all gravy.

Sering this video, I just realize how Westerners mostly live in luxury, houses/apartments that have very minimal noises. Me, a southeast Asian, used to live with constant noises, since I came from lower class. It gave me advantages though. I can sleep fine with noises, even without earplugs, so it's really no problem with me to travel with minimal conditions.

In Japan, you are not allowed to make any noise, including alam ⏰️. You can set alam on a clock inside the capsul room. When it is time to get up, the light will turn on.

Seems like there should be a way to reduce the noise, while maintaining ventilation. Maybe a flexible insulation material, such as layered blankets over the door, and a tube with a fan tucked under the blanket to provide airflow into the "room" ... and another with no fan on the other side of the doorway, to provide outflow.

i have to say i found this video really surprising. i recently stayed at a capsule hotel for the first time in my life, in tokyo. it was really comfortable inside the capsules in every aspect - not too hot, not too loud, easy to breathe, easy to relax - and i slept perfectly through all 3 of the nights i stayed there. since the concept of capsule hotels originated in japan, maybe they're just executed better there than in other countries? the lockers were WAY bigger than what this video showed and the shower rooms had locks. the capsules were located on a different floor from the bathrooms and talking, working, eating and using loud alarms was forbidden on the capsule floors. for talking, eating or working, you could access a lounge which was really nice and comfortable. this allowed the entire capsule floor to be entirely silent the entire time. people went to bed after me and got up before me but i wasn't bothered at all, my sleep wasn't disturbed whatsoever. highly recommend staying at a capsule hotel in tokyo, i had a great stay!! (the chain i stayed with is called 9hours in case anyone's wondering)

It is possible to sound insulate the capsules during the construction, you'd loose about an inch for each of the walls between the capsules, so probably a whole column of the capsules per corridor, but people will be able to sleep...

I stayed at this specific capsule hotel twice in different months this year! I'm surprised that they said it was hot and stuffy, maybe the female rooms are different. It wasn't noisy at all either. Maybe a few zippers opening and closing, (perhaps in a female communal space, we are more considerate of these things). The only issue I had was just having to climb up and down the very uncomfortable ladders to go to the toilets.

Stayed in a capsule hotel for a few days in Tokyo. I liked it more than I thought I would, but i brought a CO2 monitor with me and when I was in a top capsule with another person below me, the ppm got up to 2000 when fresh air should be 400. That's enough to mess with your head in a not great way. I was able to get a bottom row capsule but the ppm was still 1300-1400 with just me. Plus I had a fan blowing in air from the outside which didn't help much.

I stayed in one in Osaka. The place was air conditioned, and maybe I was just too tired but I didn't hear anyone else's alarm. I did hear one person snoring though. But I also chose a capsule that had a tv and listened to it with headphones while i slept. They are awesome for single travellers, when you just need a night or three somewhere, and when you dont have too much luggage. I put my massive bag in the train station locker and just had a small bag with me at the hotel.

Looked pretty nice though. The USB fan is def a good idea, they make some that you can charge if you need that USB port free. I think if it's a cheaper option I'd go with it, I'm a decently heavy sleeper. Even if it was about the same as a hotel, when your option is that or a random chair I'll take the capsule XD

Try playing white noise next time you’re being kept up by the other people who are staying in your dorm! I’ve never been to a capsule hotel but I have had to sleep while people are making noise and I find that’s the best way to camouflage the background noises Without anything running I can hear my neighbours washing machine when I’m two floors away and in my own house, but if my AC is running I can barely hear my kids talking outside my bedroom door

To everyone considering a capsule hotel, DON'T! If you are light sleeper, someone who is lazy to bring eye patch/ear plugs, or get annoyed easily. Don't be cheap to end up with the thought of murdering someone else. Srsly. I've had great stays in capsules, bring an ear plug if the noises bother you. Like it or not, most capsules can't soundproof, esp movement, snores, or ppl walking outside after a heavy night of drinking.

They should mandate no alarms and just give you a wrist watch or head band that vibrates or something. Maybe even something that does a progressively stronger shock if vibration doesn't work. Construction/design changes could also make things quieter, but one of the biggest would be expensive: no stacking of the pods. The upside is that you'd get a lot of space for a pod hotel. Enough to stand up or change, or sit on a chair. Lastly there should be microphones to pick up noise and set off a strobe if someone is making noise in their pod. That being said, there's no reasonable/good way I can think of to prevent snoring or somniloquy short of like covering mouths, but that seems both unfair and possibly ineffective or dangerous.

A good ACTIVE noise canceling set of earphones (not passive/mechanical isolation earbuds) and a background noise generating app and the sound won’t be a problem. You probably should get a more effective fan, the usb ones are moving so little air. Fine if your within 1 feet of it, not enough for a capsule.

FWIW, 'Mighty Plugs' are the most amazing ear plugs ever made. (Seriously. I bought a set and can't even use them because I have tinnitus. :sigh: ) They are made of cotton, beeswax, and lanolin, and you tear off enough to make a plug that doesn't put pressure on your ears. They are NRR34 with a single plug, b ut you can combine more for a higher rating. Cheers!
