The sole surviving class 28, Metro-Vic loco, D5705 with the unusual co-bo axle design is seen visiting Bury Bolton Street station during the Summer Diesel Gala.
Sadly, not working ,but still under a massive restoration project.
It will be great to see her running again ''soon'' !

I never saw one of these in proper service, but I do remember being at Bristol Temple Meads looking into the sidings at Bath Road depot. There was this odd-looking loco there that I didn't recognise. Binoculars out to try to get some details. Looks like it's a Co-Co. Oh no, hang on, it's two axles must be a Bo-Bo. Oh no, hang on.... It's actually Co-Bo. Never heard of such a thing. (It turns out it was being used to warm carriages prior to service, so the engine was running even if it didn't move)

If only one loco could be preserved, a hoover or the metro vick, surely the only choice would be the 50, the 50 the 50. But with the EE type 4, and other classes well represented in preservation, it is fantastic that this example of a less successful early diesel class has made it into preservation. Absolute respect to those who have brought the co bo to this condition: can’t wait to see it as a working loco , a ‘high days and holidays special’ perhaps.

They may have been a better performing loco if not doomed by a bad engine. The Crossley standby diesel engines at my power station also failed and had to be replaced by Allen diesel engines (much more reliable). Crossley later abandoned their own designs and produced Pielstick engines (French) under licence. I think the loco is one of the ugliest designs ever made, along with the class 70. I would assume that as it's under going restoration, they would not only like to show it off, but also check that it runs through the pointwork and crossing e.t.c without any issues!
