@@robertluong3024 I call bull on this guy. First of all, Croatian, Serbian and Macedonian are very similar to each other and every Balkan person can understand all of it. Second, his version of Serbian was definitely taught without any deeper understanding cause here basically nobody talks like this, only some wanna be 90s criminals and tough guys from old jokes. I really find it hard to believe that anyone would find someone to practice with that idiotic accent
@thefantasyreview8709
@thefantasyreview8709 3 месяца назад
Yeah, for some languages, seems to know just a few basic sentences, "Like where do you live? Be My friend?" and anything beyond that he doesn't understand. He keep those conversations really short, and then switches to something he does know.
@davorbrijacak
@davorbrijacak 2 месяца назад
@@milosuz Slight correction, Croatian and Serbian are same language and Macedonian is similar language with partial mutuability. He's Macedonian so his Serbo-Croatian accent is good because of partial mutuability but like you said, it sounds like some 90s urban slang. That being said he's saying many words but without really going anywhere, without much substance. It would be like saying in English: "Well, ya know, I like people here bro, yeah bro, fucken A dude, yeah yeah, you understand bro, yeah, good, come on, lets go dude." Counting Serbian and Croatian as individual language just to artificially pump the number of languages he speaks is very dishonest but most people would never double check it. He can understand Serbo-Croatian better when listening just like I can understand basic Macedonian when listening too but it's different to actually have prolonged and complex conversation, best I can do is to memorize some slang stuff. If I had to speak Croatian and he had to speak Macedonian, we would understand each other for basic stuff for like a minute or so, but it would be so awkward and we would transition to English anyway.

even if were not accounting for some of the languages, the definition of a polyglot is having a good understanding of 3-5 languages."d polyglots can speak several languages - usually having a grasp of at least somewhere between 3-5 languages. " Just having a grasp. and I would say a small understanding of the language and being able to introduce yourself would quantify as a grasp. Even if were not talking about just a grasp, they had a really good ability to speak french, dutch, english, russian, and german. which is 5 languages that they all have an amazing understanding in. How would you know I have heard that Arabic is spoken in so many countries and the difference is so big between some of them that it feels they speak something other than Arabic
@Starlitt
@Starlitt Месяц назад
@@LuchoCastle_11 you got that right, there are a lot of accents and whole dialects scattered around in every Arabic speaking country but almost every single one of them never uses the Classical Arabic accent/dialect (for anyone who grew up in an Arabic speaking language its really easy to know what accent/dialect the other person is using because they grow up watching movies and tv shows made by different countries so really you kind of pick on that just from watching stuff that your parents watch), the only time you would see that being used is when you are in school (and the students barely use any of it either unless they are directly responding/talking to teachers even the teachers don't use it among themselves, unless its a professional environment) or authorities addressing things in councils or on TV as well as cartoons aimed towards children (though i'd like to add that some of them even use accents and dialects of the country that's making the dubbing/made the cartoon, egyptian is most common if I had to say), although rewatching the Arabic segment it seems like Wouter Corduwener was altering between Egyptian Arabic and Classical Arabic which is a bit confusing to listen to, the translation at the bottom screen seem to be wrong as well it was written as "i want to drink something with you: coffee or tea" but what he really said was "I want to drink somethings with you: coffee and tea" so yea that's a little bit of a grammar oopsie there and another thing that got me a bit confused is that his accent is somewhat trying to be egyptian while solely using Classical Arabic dialect, after that sentence he said, when the other person responded I barely understood what he was trying to say, it could be that he meant "you perfected Classical Arabic" which would be in Classical Arabic "ant 'ahsant 'al fashaa" although in Classical Arabic that's not usually how its said and i'd like to add that he butchered the pronunciation of that sentence. the subtitles are exaggerated in the part that follows as well. I'd bet that's pretty much the case in every other dialogue they had but to translate literally what he said in the "i learned modern standard arabic at home with youtube videos and i have a friend" part it pretty much sounds like this in English "I study Classical Arabic home with RU-vid and and and (first one is arabic the second two are english) friends" in Arabic "انا ادرس الفصحى البيت مع يوتيوب و اصدقائي" so yeah that pretty much what that was, i'd like to add that the other person barely spoke any coherent words and even the ones he did utter were all over the place like his last "thanks a lot" "thanks" was Classical Arabic Dialect. In contrast "a lot" was Algerian and Moroccan (those are in the North African region) sadly they only spoke Arabic in this video, they were about to speak Japanese so I would've liked to know how well they faired but they didn't. but yeah their Arabic was as awful as you would expect from a jack of all trades. Sorry about the essay but figured i'd at least explain this thoroughly for other people who are interested in learning more about this.

I'm European and I recently visited a Brazilian restaurant here in the UK. I'm not confident enough with PT yet, but of the few words I used to communicate such as please and thank you etc. the waiters all initiated full-on conversations with me because I have a Santa Catarina, BR accent as opposed to a Portugal accent - they assumed I was fluent. Anyone can be a polyglot, besides, they don't just know some sentences, they can also understand what the other person is saying. I think a lot of people here missed the point, "unique encounter in 21 languages", they were able to keep a basic conversation with basically full comprehension of what the other person was saying. The glasses-guy made key points; he didn't speak many of these languages for years and is not practicing to switch back and forth. Also he can not find the words in certain languages for speaking, but he has comprehension of even 50+ languages. Some polyglots in history have spoken 100+ languages throughout their life, it doesn't mean they could switch between them all at once. They could "activate" a given language in a few days if they had to travel somewhere specific. That in itself is magic.

As someone who can speak both spanish and portugues the beginning was hilariously dumb and very awkward. The conversation was not nature at all they basically kept interrupting each other like it was a cringey competition. They repeated the same phrases over and over and responded sometimes before the other person finishes which made it seem unnatural. The guy that said he could do 5 spanish accents made a fool of himself. He has one accent which is gringo speaking beginner level spanish. Dude in the hat was a bit less cringey. However, of course it also depends on what dialect you speak. I'm Swedish and can understand a lot of Norwegian dialects, and some Swedish dialects I can barely understand, for instance. Their Danish sounded a lot more like Norwegian. As a Norwegian I understood everything, but I'm not sure how easy it would be for an average Dane to follow them. The thing is that if you learn Danish from text books and don"t have a clue about the pronunciation rules, you could easily end up with this type of pseudo-Norwegian language.

There was a study conducted (or concluded) recently on how different languages transport a different amount of information per syllable. Japanese and Spanish for example convey very little information while German is on the other end of the spectrum, that's why Japanese and Spanish are spoken much faster than German such that the infomation flow is pretty much constant for all languages. That might be why they seem to speak so much more calm. Grüße aus Deutschland =)

Great, I love this! I can speak french, english, italian, spanish, german. I also understand and speak a little portuguese. Now, with my german, I realised that I understand better germanic languages, I was at ease in Holland and Sweeden. I should stay in these countries for a couple of months, and I know I could speak a little. My dream: to speak arabic, chinese, russian, japanese like these guys! I will learn these languages for sure, all of them! Bravo!

Not really, it is clear that he only knew very little things to say and couldn’t really carry on a meaningful conversation. Those very little phrases can help him improve, however. I’ve had several encounters with people that say they want to practice their Spanish and the only phrases they know are generic friendly phrases like: “Hola, amigo” and “me gusta tus zapatos” or “yo hablo un poco Español” which isn’t bad at all if you really want to learn they are great stepping stones to build up from there.

But still it happens very often- I really, really want to say something in my mother tongue, but I can only think of an English word for it. Or I speak Russian and I have a tendency to switch to english at random. I spoke to a Ukrainian lady on a train that needed to get to a certain stop and I kept saying English words.
