Unique Utrecht: Revisiting this Iconic Dutch City
This week, we're taking you back to the city of Utrecht, The Netherlands. Utrecht was one of the first cities we visited once we arrived, and we felt as though that video didn't really show the beauty and uniqueness of the city. Join us as we search for a hidden tunnel beneath the streets, tour the Spoorweg Museum (Train Museum) and dine at a restaurant with conveyor belt cheese!

Many cafe's and bars in Utrecht have cats for a very practical reason. Back when I lived in Utrecht, I recall heading home late at night on the Oude Gracht and you could literally see mice racing around the closed HEMA shop in the half dark. Mice are a big problem in the old buildings, especially near the canals. Hence, cats, not just cute, but useful ;-)

Next time in the center of the Netherlands visit Amersfoort, 20 minutes from Utrecht. Also medieval, city wall and a unique medieval city gate. Also a copy of the Dom tower, bit smaller but without the scaffolding. And a even less tourists. Fun fact, the church tower (lange jan) is also the cadastral center of the Netherlands.

Suggestion for a next visit to Utrecht is the Domunder experience. Instead going up, you're going down to the old ruins of the church part that used to connect the Dom tower to the church. Also a part of Roman ruins are showed.

When craving for the best Greek Gyros to go, go to El Greco which is at the Gansenmarkt , you'll see that at 100 meters in front of the end of the tunnel from the oude gracht. The building diagonally cross El Greco is the former Stadhuis. Also fun fact about the Dom tower. It was attached to the building next to it. Unfortunately a hefty storm in the mid evil blew the mid part away and it was never fixed. Also about 25 years ago a small city bus drove underneath the Dom toren. Don't know if it still does as I'm not a student anymore. Also maybe fun to hang around is at the Ledig Erf and is at the end of the oude Gracht (not where you started in the vlog) and lovely cafe's and restaurants there.

What not many people know, when the Oude Gracht was dug, the spoils were dumped next to it. To get to the Gracht tunnels were dug in the spoils and that's what you walk on to of now. So what you call the low level, is really the level from the 1400 or so. And the high part is the stuff deposited since!

What a lovely city. One point. I am disabled and can’t recall seeing anyone in a wheelchair on the streets, or signs noting disabled access. Can you enlighten?
@Snowshowslow
@Snowshowslow Год назад
Hi :) Hmmm sadly I don't think it's the easiest city to visit as a wheelchair user, I have to say... The train station and many of the modern buildings are accessible and in most quieter areas you will be able to use the cycle paths if the sidewalk isn't even enough, but many of the historic buildings and some of the historic streets are not exactly wheelchair friendly. For example the Oudegracht from the beginning of the video - I don't think there's an elevator / escalator down to the lower level and even the higher level is paved with bricks (no asphalt). Buses have a wheelchair spot and a ramp the driver (or a helpful passenger) will flip out of the bus. However, only one wheelchair per bus will fit. Trams should be level, but if there's a gap there's a similar plank. Wheelchair taxi's exist ('rolstoeltaxi' / 'rolstoelvervoer') but they're quite expensive. If there's anything specific you'd like to know, feel free to message me. Disclaimer: I am not a wheelchair user myself, so all I can do is use my knowledge, common sense and Google in Dutch.
