most songs that's different from the trend will usually be called 'flat' or 'empty' because basically they're different from what we're usually hearing. But upon hearing them on repeat or live performance you'll definitely change your mind.
EXACTLY! people are very much used to listen the same pinkpantheress track all over again in every kpop group in the industry that something different scares them off.
When I saw the teaser, I already knew that they're going for something gritty this time, so, even I had some apprehensions going into this. Widening a group's artistic horizons and repertoire is good, but sometimes, agencies fumble the bag with doing like a completely unrelated change, that it gives you whiplash (Weeekly comes to mind). With this one, I think the agency chose well. It's spunky, so it's not just Superwoman 2.0, but! The vocals provide that sweet, bright contrast, so it's still interesting. It's not just girl crush for girl crush's sake--the sweet bright vocals anchor you to where they started. And the talking parts (Nana, Yoona, and Gehlee's) sound so.. rich? I love that too about this. Also, I understand why they chose to go with this song this time. If you've watched the survival show they're from, Universe Ticket, there is actually a format with every level--they're usually split into two groups--one sweet and bubblegum pop-py and the other group is more fierce and girl crush. So, I think the management had this in mind even before the group was formed. They were looking to release a group with some duality/versatility. If you listen to their WeUnis album, there are actually some people who liked their B-side Dopamine more than Superwoman (I'm team Superwoman, btw), and were hoping for the comeback to be more gritty like Dopamine, so I think this one's for them. Even Dopamine was a grower for me, and now, I listen to it almost everyday. I think you might like the B-side Poppin' more--it's kind of Twice-y, Viviz-y (reminds me of their sweet catchy songs like Bop! Bop!). Also, at first, Datin' Myself was kind of bland for me, but the more I listened, the more it reminded me of LOONA's Dance on My Own--similar themes, kind of similar vibes. Sorry if it's long! I also wanted to gather my thoughts about this one.
Please don’t apologise for leaving long comments 😭 I live for the essays! I always ask people to leave their thoughts in the comments and wish people did it more often so thank you! ❤️
the song's feeling / structure gave me so much cheeky icy thang from STAYC as i even thought BEP (STAYC's producer) produced this song too for a second
I personally think that it really depends on the person, their typa music, maybe it’s just not your cup of tea, and I or we respect that. But honestly, I was literally smiling the whole time I watch the video, I really love it and for me it’s a bop🔥
Imo this is what's missing for some people: a bass backline. 😂 Basically people are used, especially in this 5th gen economy, to bass carrying on in the background with 808s being the main beat of the song. Unis risked making the electric guitar do that instead of the usual, which makes people think the song is empty or flat...takes some getting used to ig, but it's very common if you listen to 2000s rock and punk music.
I think this is what they're really going for. I remember several who commented in their Medley and M/V teaser that the song reminded them of 2nd gen Kpop, which fits just right. They'll just be a dime in a dozen if they just go with the 5th gen tide. It's a risk, but maybe it'll pay off and resonate to older Kpop fans.
Personally, I'm putting CURIOUS to my gym track as this seems like a "war song". For everyday listening, I'm putting their B-sides - Datin Myself and Poppin! I immediately love the two songs there; easier to the ears so check those out too!
Tbh that's what i was expecting first time listening it, like wheres the "punch"? As the music keeps going lower then pumping up again. But i listened to it again and its a bop! Love it now i continue listening to it haha~ you and I... Story...
That's interesting because I am the total opposite of you!! How you feel about this song is how I feel about Superwoman as my first impression and how you feel about Superwoman is how I feel about Curious lol but with Superwoman the more you listen the more it grows on you and hopefully curious will be like that for you too! But if not it's okay it's all about preferences anyway and thanks for the reaction! 🎧🎶
For me, i love this song than superwoman because superwaman its like a cutsy and this one is a girl crush type, im so diggin this song, i like this kind of song and this is also a fair line distribution
Hey Fifi! I'm not sure if you've listened to any of their bsides already (both in this release and in their debut album) but if not, would you be reacting to them on Patreon? Would love to see your reaction there 🫶🏻
Poppin was much better, but I have a feeling Curious will be a grower for me too. I agree with the lack of bass, it's not "hard hitting" enough because of it
It's definitely a grower. Just a second snd third listening to it im hooked 😂😂. They would be pumping this music everywhere and get it stuck in everyone's head
THANK U FOR REACTING😚 pls also try reacting to poppin as well as their performance video... Listening to the song while watching the dance definitely has a different impact!!!!!
the song was ok for me? if it came on I wouldn’t skip it. The bside POPPIN’ on the other hand is night and day compared to Curious for me, it’s been on repeat since a while ago, I suggest everyone listening to it~
Thank you for all your great videos. A music video by Japanese idol group Nogizaka46, set in Singapore, was released today! Please give us your reaction video if you would like to share it with us!
Fifi what’s your thoughts on lyricists adding more and more english to kpop songs recently? the english lines for this song felt out of place for me (especially the 2nd verse) 👀
You know me and lyrics, I barely notice them unless I concentrate on them or read them but I feel like it’s the companies that probably push for more English lyrics rather than the writers
The chorus was addicting but the post chorus rather than lacking I'm expecting more heavy guitar solo or strong vocals to cover the "waiting" to the next singing line
Like this better than Superwoman cause I adore dreamcatcher and their music and it feels something dreamcatcher would do. It definitely a song which will grow on people
2/2 of the reaction vids ive seen, all of them said the same, but it may grown on them. I think if you don't like the style of the song, it may hard for you to like it, also, i think, maybe because ive heard the medley and they released the chorus first, so my mind has been set (if you have watched it on tiktok) that im looking forward on what does it sound in a full song, and im satisfied. The fair line distribution has exceeded my expectation tho.
