This is really a crazy accident. The captain was so focused he completely ignored everything around him. It's mind-boggling the fo didn't take control.
I was flying to Portland the same night as United Airlines Flight 173. However, I was flying on Continental Airlines on a flight that also departed Stapleton Airport in Denver. When my husband picked me up at the airport, he told me that there was crash at PDX just a few hours earlier. Of course, being in the other plane headed to Portland, I hadn't know anything about it
At the time, I lived 7 miles from where this plane crashed. Back then the area was far less populated. If that happened today it would have been catastrophic. Far more death & destruction on the ground.
Cameras (or sensors) installed inside the plane to indicate if landing gear is stowed or not would be ideal. IMO this is more feasible than externally mounted cameras to check gear down, as others mentioned.
Airline captains are still a very privileged class and put on "god-like" behaviour in countries such as Pakistan....with massive egos, they turn agressive and violent when challenged -- even if the challenge is legitimately founded.
Another reason (other than no fuel) there wasn't more fire at the crash site was Portland had just installed emergency electrical disconnects in that area. Once the power lines got ripped down, the system shut down the power. No fuel was a big help but the lack of live powerlines laying on the ground helped a lot. It's a 20-minute drive for me to visit that crash site.
The Captain had been part of an investigation of another DC-8 in Denver which led him to want to land with the least amount of fuel to prevent fire. With that goal he was successful.
“Gas” is a colloquialism that gets used all the time among professional pilots. I use it interchangeably with kerosene to inject a little down-to-earth element. But you are right. Technically it is Jet-A…
And this is a Pakistani gentleman who has obtained his Commercial Pilot's Certificate....a prospective airline captain. Note the imperious tones in which he introduces his flying club: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-OetlEMJ-Vg4.html
As an example of what I have said below, refer to the infamous Air Blue crash of 2010. Here is a good video in this regard: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-nZPcBoGUi7A.html
