I was the principal clarinet for this concert tour. I doubt if the Russian conductor believed we could actually play his ridiculous tempo! I'm seated in the third chair, the old guy with all the chins! We always placed the principal clarinet inboard, in the interest of hearing each other better.

Wow. I played this arrangement years ago (probably not quite that tempo, though our conductor liked to take things fast). And having lived in Moscow for a couple years, the concert dynamic was very familiar - the announcer introducing each piece, the flowers. Must have been quite the adventure touring the USSR in 1990.

I wonder how this was posible. Even bearing in mind that by this time the Cold War was nearly over. But anyone can give me the context in which The President's Own was playing in the USSR? Great performance by the way :)
