A quick guide to place an object into a character's hand to animate along with them.
We'll work with a character model from Synty Studios Polygon City pack.

Did you attach to the hand bone? And were you moving with the pivot or the centre point selected? Depending on the pivot point of your sword, that could be the issue.

Thanks dude! I need my boss guy to pick up a weapon he's gonna suck into his arms. But i guess i'll keep the animation on hold untill he moves his hands open and THEN reset it to 0 position.

@@GameDevBits Yeah my problem at first was that the rigging and weightpainting is all done in blender. But since im both noob in unity AND blender, the big dude probably needs to manually bake the axe animation in blender for EVERY position. SO it's gonna have maybe 200 frames. That's way too costly. SO the weapons i'm just gonna use your method for.

Thanks alot for providing The video! I think its important to Note tho, that this only works, if the characters Rig and Animations are Setup in a Way, that support exactly this placement. If you have handbones rotating in your animations, this method will not look smooth or good because the sword starts rotating aswell when you move.

Im a little confused what you're saying. Things in the hand are intended to follow the hand. If you're making a game you'll need to control what animations play while an object is visible in the hand. A clap or hand twisting animation would make no sense. Not playing animations that dont involve a sword feels like pretty redundant advice.

@@GameDevBits ah dang it, maybe I've not explained myself well enough. I mean that if the animation is slightly more complicated, let's say some really good looking Mixamo walking animation which also slightly rotates the bones in the hand/fingers, then adding a long sword to the handbone exaggerates the small rotation or angle the bone has. (Because it acts like a lever if you know what I mean) You can't really see it in the hand but the sword may move alot while walking. A solution to this might be a separate pose to hold the sword while running and then blending an avatar mask of only the arm into the normal walking animation. I hope I explained it a little better :) anyway thanks for the comment and the video again!

If it's a sports relay race, then how can I transfer an item from one player to another when they are nearby?

The simplest way to do this would be to create a script to go on each character that stores a reference to the hand bone. Then when passing the baton to someone you simply need to read the component to get the GameObject for the hand bone, and set that as the parent. You could find the hand bone as a child of the character at runtime, but you'd be iterating over the entire skeleton every time, which could be expensive and cause some frame lag.
