Universal Gcode Sender - Demo of new Designer Plugin

This is a demo of a new feature that I've been working on for UGS. It allows you to use simple vector graphics (such as SVG files) to generate GCode tool paths to be cut using UGS.
It is still under development but will soon be available in UGS nightly builds for you guys to try out, but be careful as there most certainly will be bugs! This will soon be available in the nightly build found here: github.com/win...

Joacim, I came back as I have just completed the Mini MIll Build and I know want to learn to design a G code File to Cut a Slot. I lost this video but a friend helped me find it again I have 4 pages of screens and notes as a cheat sheet for me during use. I hope to set up the part (Slot) and start to tune the settings for the Milling Operation. I will need to test drill speeds, feed speeds, plunge speeds, cutting depth and overlap of tool paths. I had hoped you would have more current videos on the Designer Function, are you still working this Plug in? Thank You for such a useful tool for us new users of UGS, Dennis

I still work on the plugin, but it is currently most bugfixes and maintenence. I have been planning on making a new updated video but currently don't have enough time. There are some instructions with basic usage here: github.com/winder/Universal-G-Code-Sender/wiki/Usage#designer

Does UGS have a method to upload jobs to my controller's sdcard? That would be amazing to run jobs from sdcard incase my wifi or usb connection drops out.

No, there is only a feature to upload files to the localfs on FluidNC at the moment.

I am new just completing a conversion of my Dremel Drill Press to a CNC Mini Mill. I work on 1950s model trains. Some of the older chassis 1936 thru early 1950s do not support a smoke timing gear. I have designed a mechanism that uses the factory timing gear to support Chuff Sounds and Smoke puff. Now if I can mill a pocket slot into the older chassis in the right location to the right depth these older chassis could be upgraded to the newest IOT kits for Fan Smoke, Smoke Chuffs and Chuff digital Sounds. These features are all very exiting for model trains. The old trains have great detail and good scale so it is desirable to make them newer and work like the Next Gen versions. I have machined one such chassis by hand but it is so hard, takes a lot of time and is difficult to maintain accuracy. I hope with my new CNC Mini Mill and your UGS application I could shape the simple rectangle then locate the start cut pattern and use CNC to cut the slot. Thank for adding the nice and easy GUI Interface. I think it will help me get started very easy.. Once I get my Machine calibrated. Thank You, Dennis

There is unfortunately not yet any tutorials, but I will probably create a new video with the next release. Correct, there is a lot left to do in terms of optimising the gcode. =) And the pocket operation doesn't work properly yet. But I think that it is good enough for getting started. If you find anything annoying, let me know.

Very good work! Came here from reddit. - I am using Easel from Inventables right now, because I still have 4 free carving days per month. - Easel does not support laser engraving very easily. The only reasonable option is Lightburn, which is not free. - - Please keep up with your work!

it is really helpful and excellent feature, sir. really appreciate it.. I got an issue when I run it for my plasma cutter CNC, the xyz motion works well as usual, however the torch can't turn on when the torch moving down. And also it would be great if it is able to export the drawing into gcode file. Thank you so much for sharing your work sir, I believe lot of people will find it very helpful.

Thanks! I'm currently working on an export feature so that is coming in a couple of days. Regarding the torch, should it be turned off during all rapid movements? A ordinary spindle should be easy to implement by just turning it on in the beginning of the program. But I am uncertain on how the plasma cutter behaviour should be. If you have a sample gcode program that works well for your machine I could use that for a reference.

@@joacimbreiler @Joacim Breiler @Joacim Breiler yes sir, it should be turned off during rapid monuments, it start firing when it is moving down from safe hight to cutting height, and turned off when it is going up. Yes sure, I can send a simple gcode that works for my machine, where should I send it to you?

Very nice feature to have for UGS to be able to create G-code within UGS , I read it should support also dxf import , but I couldn't find that feature when running UGS ver 2.0.12, please guide me . Thanks again

Hi I am wondering what your last ver of Universal Gcode Sender since last july. Also is it stable too? Did you add jpg or other extensions to It? I have a Rattn 3018 pro cutter will it work with your system? Thanks Joe

The current and latest version of UGS is 2.0.11, but there are a couple of bug fixes in the designer tool that is available only in the "Nightly build" which I recommend: github.com/winder/Universal-G-Code-Sender#downloads I have used it for several projects and think it is stable enough to get you started with your CNC. But you won't get the same experience as a commercial product such as Easel or Lightburn. There has been plenty of bug fixes and features added since this video. For instance there is now a feature for vectorizing bitmap images such as JPGs: github.com/winder/Universal-G-Code-Sender/pull/1872 There is also a new feature for a clipart library: github.com/winder/Universal-G-Code-Sender/pull/1799 UGS works well with any GRBL based controller, so if that is what came with the Rattn 3018 you should be fine.

I am only working 1/16" to 1/2" clear plexiglass. max flat sheets, cuts and groves & angles, 2D I believe but I do need to copy and save parts also. I am looking forward to trying your Nightly Build. I know its time consuming for you, and your doing the software and the builds. From ALL OF US ON YOUR SITE! Our hats are off to you!!! 👍
