Universe Mode 101 - Booking Tips & Tricks (Matches & Match Cards)

A wrestling product will live and die by the strength of its booking. This applies not only to a simple Universe Mode series on RU-vid, but to real-life wrestling companies, as well. If you don’t experiment with new ideas, keep your audience guessing or develop new stars, you become repetitive. Repetition leads to stagnation, stagnation leads to boredom, boredom leads to suffering. The last thing that you want to do is torture your audience with a predictable, uninventive or illogical show. This video will provide some helpful tips and tricks on how you can improve your wrestling booking. I plan to release a second part where I will discuss individual characters and storylines, but this video will focus primarily on individual matches and how to properly set up a match card.

Another educational video. These are definitely some wise words and will undoubtedly help people put together better products, those who choose to heed advice anyway. I have personally replayed your 101 videos several times as I'm looking into setting something up myself. I've been writing wrestling storylines and sims for years, it's mainly the editing I need to get the hang of, but these are still helpful videos and their credibility is reinforced by the product you produce. Looking forward to Universe Mode's return later this month, Mathwiz!

ElliotVideos1 universe mode feels directionless...like why would they let us have a promo engine and cut promos if you cant really benifit from the promos..like if say your bookin Charlotte to turn on the fans and then u have her go out and do a promo bout how she hates how she tried to be a fan favorite but it got her nowhere and its about her now yada yada i feel like after that promo her stat should come up and say gain popularity and Charlotte turned on the fans along wit gain heel heat by 2% same goes for the baby face..like that would made it more interesting

You have total extreme wrestling if you just want to book shows and not playing it it's a like a football manager but for wrestling or fire pro wrestling world with the dlc fire promoter who can let you have your own promotion

for anyone wondering how to do a match card this is what I do it might work for you I do 3 MID card matches then 3 main event matches the main event always having the #1 contender or the main champion involved in a match try that if you want

I've some anothers tips for make interesting matches: - the rivalry/enemys wrestlers put part of the same team - the rivalry/enemy wrestler against indirectly another as special referee or manager another wrestler - 1st contender vs another 1st contender - the some classic "no tittle match" beetwen 1st contender vs champion - gauntlet/handicap match beetwen a champion vs 1st/2nd/3erd contenders or 1st contender vs 2nd/3rd/4rt - gauntlet/handicap match beetwen champion vs champions(WWE Champions vs Tag Team Champions) - tornado/tornado elimination match for two rivalry in the same time - tornado/tornado elimination match for a pre/post a PPV Battle Royal/Fatal 4 Way Match and for some exotic and cool combination - 6 man tag match with members of the same stable separated in two... an example Xavier Wood/Jey Uso/Sin Cara vs Kofi Kingston/Jimmy Uso/Kalisto - tag team/tornado match with allied wrestlers but not oficial stable/team(yes in the real, but no in game) For example: Faarooq(Acolytes)/The Rock(Rock n sock or NOD) vs Billy Gunn(The Outlaw)/Triple H - Triple Threat Match/Fatal 4 Way/6 man Battle Royal beetwen members of the same team/stable

Pablo Garcia will the crowd appreciate u more...if u have cena over shadow lesnar in promos...and lets say u put them in a fued and its for the title and week's go by and leadin up to the ppv lesnar attacks cena on the week before their title bout to close the show...would u have Cena win there match or lesnar win

well i don like so much the rivalries directly, but yes the indirectly like "enemy" or ally" like in WWE 13(specially making an Attitude Era )... because you have a open way to make good matches, (no matter if the rivalry accept it or no)... Yes, In WWE 2k16, you can put rivalries but... it's a pain for me because the system must me to put "rilvary matches" every week for the manner what thay want...and for me, it' ruined the freedom possibilties

I cant forget months ago what i maked a main event 6 man tag match with The Rock & Acolytes vs Triple H & Kane & Undertaker in a SmackDown and this begins a team attacking another brutally in the entrance and ends in dq...cause Triple H attacked The Rock with hammer... so it's exciting moment making for IA or I dont know but I WAS AMAZING SENSATION! I put Acolytes as 1st team contender against Taker/Kane but they battles them ndireclty by months, single matches with manager... handicaps matches.... and also, Taker and Kane had WWF TITTLE, INTERCONTINENTAL TITTLE AND TAG TEAM TITLE....and another crossed rilvaries with Stone Cold(and also he against The Rock, McMahon, etc..). so I could put good main event or midcard/lowcard matches... I did HEAT really a good pottencial like in Attittude Era, where secondary weekly programs have a good chance to see Main Eventers or Rare match(yes, i put a Steel Cage Match o Backstage Brawl in it) :)

I tried make events for example champions vs champions match o double tittle match with manager and the managers are the 1st contenders or inverted in weekly event before PPV 1st contender w/ champion vs 1st contender w/ champion... for example Ken Shemrock (n1 IC) w/ Kane IC vs Stone Cold (n1 WWF) w/Undertaker WWF) in RAW is WAR or in Satudary Night HEAT .before PPV ...no ever tittle matches are a solution, only with it had good wrestlers and crossed ally/enemy in the same time

I don't know if there are any real "cons" to having a draft when you're first starting out. It's a good way of letting people know who is on what show. If you're talking about having a draft after you have already been making Universe Mode for a while, that's a bit different.

Yes, if you're looking for the more modern version of the WWE Draft - that is, the kind where people are taken from essentially free agency and put on a show. If you're talking about the older WWE Draft where people fought for draft picks and those picks were decided at random, I don't think that would be a very good starting point.

There honestly is no perfect roster size. Murfs uses a fairly small roster, and it works for him. Sometimes I feel like my roster is too big, but I like to have as many pieces to move around the chess board as possible. It all depends on what works best for you.

I watch lots of wrestling still at age 16 but I'm not having as much fun playing universe mode as I use to. I don't like the format for 2k17. The in game character models on the match card ruin the vibe. I don't like having to load up a whole entire match card, watch the opening show cutscene, then see bunches of bad matches I have to fix but don't have the time for. I use to go through a years worth of universe mode a day. Now it bores me.

Mathwiz97X hope we get a ratings system in Universe mode like show ratings and actual storylines/writers and fans to give us there feed back on certain fueds that they like and want to see win the belt or storlines at the ppv kinda like a twitter feed kinda like what Nba1k does with there built in..in game twitter when fans can talk bout players and stats like they can talk bout heel turns or face turns or promos in Universe mode oh and if a match is boring fans chant boring

All for Universe Mode? I always play with my friends and family. We pick a superstar and just control them. We don't change anything on the card is stuff like that. Basically multiplayer MyCareer with an actual superstar.

KaricoTV in that case I would say don't control all characters maybe one or two because personally for multi person matches I stick with the character I want to win and what happens from there happens. Usually they turn out pretty good for instance recently on one of my AOA UM episode I had a women Fatal 4 Way for the AOA Women Championship now this led to the match going longer than I intended but it worked out.

You make a lot of great points. Good video. While I use a lot of your points, especially when it comes to logic and creating stories behind matches, I like to not over edit my matches. I have an idea who I would like to win but I enjoy playing the matches and having that level of unpredictability on who will win. It's a fine balance to try and achieve, because total unpredictability can also become boring but too much editing and over producing matches, whether it's real life or a video game can make the product less entertaining.

i like your ideas and i also can confirm with alot of those ideas but i have to be honest since there isnt a real gm Mode anymore like in svsr 06 - 08 the enjoyment for the wwe games from there on is realy gone in my oppinion and in my Mind grapics and presentation isnt just everything, keep up your good work i realy like ur stuff, greets from good olé germany^^

What do you mean about the rope break rule? If either superstar has there foot under the rope, it's a rope break. Thats been a rule for ever...literally. Lol Don't really know the rules?

Under the rope? I knew about having feet *on* the ropes, but I don't understand how having your foot *under* the rope would be helpful to you. I have never seen that rule applied in any other match besides that Triple H-Ambrose match.

Mathwiz97X oh ya lol. It is WWE so they use rules when it works for them lol. But ya any part of your body is touching or over/under the ropes it's a rope break. Sometimes WWE decides to recognize rules, or ignore them, as you know lol, but this is a legit rule in professional wrestling.

How do you decide to let people get offense, do you play as these people or just comentate over the 2 CPUs (I think thats the right word) fighting, and if you do play as a person, do you intentionally throw matches, o. let some things happen? It's kind of hard to really have an in-depth universe mode with out advanced AI settings (if you go the simulation route which I do) or a second controller/person playing to help you out. The AI is ridiculous on all levels. There are no settings for jobber, credible opponent which is why I dropped my universe mode. I will be implementing some of your ideas though because they are good. Maybe this time I can last more than a month in universe mode.

I just started playing Universe Mode and I am loving what I'm looking/doing but I have a question. I'm doing Monday - Saturday but with different promotions each with their assigned day; WWE, ROH, AEW, CMLL, NxT and NJPW. am I doing it wrong? Any suggestions are welcomed
