Finally an American I can be proud of who doesn't annoy the Brits with high fives! Also, 2 highly talented teams who I hope both will make it far into the competition. Great match.
The high-fiving was socially inept, but it was a sign of friendship and solidarity he gave to teammates decidedly below his level. Golfinos was one of the strongest players the game has seen, on par with Monkman and Loveday. He carried a weak team from an anonymous college and deserved to win the final. I see nothing to be ashamed of in his very much American candor and friendliness.
Fun fact: Claire Jones was a high school teammate (at St. John's in Houston) of George Davies, who appeared for St. Andrew's several series ago. They were national runners-up at the high school level (HSNCT) in 2014.
Jones was amazing. And for someone studying a degree in medicine,, Walker must be disappointed in not getting quick enough to answer a number of those starters that had medical clues
Yes, makes the contest so much more meaningful, the questions so much more interesting, the contestants' knowledge so much more impressive. Long live the sexist perspective.
Was I the only 60+ year old to identify LCD Sound System (although I confess I said LED! - I'm sure Jeremy would have said 'that's near enough for an old fart).
Spoiler alert! This may prove unpopular but I think it was fair enough for Paxman to be lenient on the final question as he pointed out both teams were going to make it to the next round. When umpiring/refereeing/adjudicating, the safest option is to go for the least extreme one, which here is to allow it.
I think he was lucky to get away with that last answer, even though he knew it. 'Pisa' is not the same answer as 'the Leaning Tower of Pisa,' just as 'Troy' is not the same answer as 'Helen of Troy.'
@@MrExEssex ? I said 'last answer.' You know, the tie-breaker, the one that decided the match? Paxman could have pulled him up on it and it would have lost them the match.
It was not a giveaway by Paxman. Perrin had part of the answer and Paxman gave him a chance to complete it. It's not known as 'The Colossus' but 'The Colossus of RHODES'. Having said that, I'm sure all 8 were aware of such a baby question and Perrin was just fastest on the buzzer. Would've been nice if a pint was involved like in pub quiz ties! 😂
@@Sandra27HK He didn't say 'Colossus,' he said '(pause for twattish smug grin...) Rhodes... pause............ Colossus of Rhodes.' If there was no issue then why did Paxman say 'I'll have to give it to you'? He possibly got the question/answer muddled in his head or buzzed before he was able to vocalise the entire answer. It happens all the time to contestants, as it does to me at home. Paxman is hardly consistent with his leniency, so the contestant and his team were lucky that Paxman was generous on this occasion.
I agree with all comments here. In more draconian times Paxman wouldn’t have allowed it. I personally think if ever there was a time to strictly enforce the rules it would be during a tie-break to decide the match. I hope Paxman is not this lenient come finals time.
Warning! Long post ahead! Firstly, for the first time in a long time, many of these questions were right up my alley, and I had to pause playback a few times to stop spluttering in indignation. Not knowing the National Railway Museum, and taking too long to get Cole Porter, Billie Holiday and Madonna, OMG! Maybe I should stop being indignant and realise I'm getting old, but where's the fun in that... ;-) Really enjoyed the Asterix questions, and surprised myself by knowing most of the religious symbols. A great game for me personally. Secondly, I'm really pleased both of these teams are going through. I enjoyed both of them, and thought they both deserved a second chance. On that note, I'm really looking forward to the knockout stages. This year, it has seemed to me that there have been a hell of a lot of really good teams go through, and despite anything I've said before, I couldn't possibly pick any one or two teams to get to the finals. Bring on the rest of the season! Alright, rant over. Time to get dressed and go to work in the real world (TM)....
1) Is it me, or there is something going on between Jones (amazing knowledge) and Walker? 2) twelve episodes in and I still can't see an unbearable character such as Leo, Golfinos, Krol or the captain of the runner-up team of two years ago 3) great, great match questions are getting harder or I'm focusing less, 80 points over 11 right questions only for me : (
