I don’t have all the answers, but my first hand experience from spending the day outside Cambridge University and talking directly to the students was enough to have these questions:
1) what do they actually teach you at university?
2) why do people with degrees in economics not understand basic economics?
3) if you want to start a business, will university actually help you do that?
4) why do the schools and government not do much to provide basic financially literacy to kids?
5) are degrees overrated these days?
Let me know your thoughts in the comments

I never comment, but I like your content, and thought I'd add some insight to your questions: 1) What do they actually teach you at university? I went to University in the 1990’s, and learned a great deal: I did an Economics/Politics and languages degree. It fired my thirst for knowledge and made me a more rounded individual, because you have to read for your degree, and gain critical thinking. I also learned independence and resourcefulness, which I've fallen back on throughout my life. 2) why do people with degrees in economics not understand basic economics? I would encourage you to collate more data/ask more students, by broadening out the sample size. I don't think it's just limited to Economic students. In fact, wouldn't it be interesting to do a survey with those 15 questions, to the wider public, to see if you could detect some trend analysis? 3) if you want to start a business, will university actually help you do that? It builds a range of skills which are transferable to the corporate world/enabling you to build a business. It’s encouraged me to have a more global, macro economic view of the world. 4) why do the schools and government not do much to provide basic financially literacy to kids? Because they want us to work until we’re 70+: pay our taxes, to increase GDP, to pay for the country’s services, so we can pay for the increasing number of retired people. There are fewer people of working age, to pay for the increasing number of retired people: I for one am very grateful to Doctors, surgeons, Pharmacists, other healthcare professionals, who have done 7+ years’ at University, to obtain the prerequisite skill sets to enable and sustain their profession, and look after the population. I'm also very glad the people at the front of the plane have degrees! There are a wide variety of people in the property industry with degrees. 5) are degrees overrated these days? It's difficult to generalise; some professions mandate a degree, so, depends who you ask: it’s important to have a balanced view, in my opinion. A degree has definitely enhanced my life; including teaching me valuable life skills, outside the academics. It’s fired my curiosity and desire to learn different things; given the confidence to change jobs and careers; have different life experiences, like living in different countries. To your point regarding some students not wanting to participate in your study: that could be because of a general fear of failure, which isn’t related to their being at Cambridge per se.

Hi Sam, great content, as always. I am a big fan of your work; you care and have helped so many people achieve their goals on the property. I like the way you tell it like it is. Kudos to you. I want to add on the topic when you mentioned, "government-backed all the schools and the universities in the UK and whoever wanted to go to the university will get a student loan" If I may add, well, not every student will automatically receive a student loan, it depends on your financial situation. For instance, if students have parents with an income above the threshold, those students won't automatically receive a student loan just because their parents can afford to give their kids tuition fees. AKA parents are wealthy, so students from affluent families who have no worries about their financial situation won't be qualified or not eligible for student finance. Almost similar situation with mature student who wants to expand their education to the higher level such Master/PHD and currently working with earning above the treshole which is £31K if I am not mistaken, therefore you will have to pay your own tuition fee. Or the gov only gives a portion of the tuition fee. To sum up on the topics on your questions about finance, corporation tax, stamp duty and so on to those students, I 100% agreed as they are basic questions but in my experience being at University, there are different types of modules, either the university system on their curriculum in what subject they will get it, i.e. the fundamental and the compulsory finance subjects which include knowledgeability in all about SDLT, Corporation Tax, Assets, liabilities, and so on. Sorry for the long comments. Feel free to correct me, by the way. God bless, and have a fab weekend

I shouldn’t have gone to uni as my jobs never needed it, HOWEVER in terms of building social skills when you’re 18 is the biggest impact it had.

There’s a university in SE that teaches nothing/rubbish. Not one student I know myself included work in the area we studied. Their MBA is just a regurgitation of the 1st year BSc degree.!! Shocking. No surprise it’s now in administration. Complete waste of years & time. THANK YOU Samuel for what you do.

I see the overall point being made here, but I question to what extent this video is motivated by a personal grudge against the ice cream guy. It's not great form to call people pussies, liars or cowards just because a recent school leaver is a bit insecure and worried about being made to look stupid on camera. There also seems to be a bit of inverted snobbery going on. I don't think it's particularly telling about some wider societal problem that undergrad students don't know the price of a house in the 90s or the ins and outs of tax relief for lodgers. These are very discrete things about a specific type of investment that people generally learn once they need to learn them, by spending five seconds on Google. What you are doing seems comparable to if a pension adviser approached you with a list of discrete questions about IHT exclusions or historic changes in lump sum allowances, or whatever, and then made a video about how shocked he was about how poor your knowledge is. These are all basic concepts that will be very relevant and important to you one day, but not necessarily today, and if you're not fully conversant with them right now then it's not evidence of some big problem or conspiracy to deprive you of knowledge.

The person who mentioned whats inside the window isnt lieing we spent weeks learning about different Window systems and uv rating . I did a property development course at university and left knowing less than what i did in my own time before going university.... I attended your course in london last year and learned more in that week than i did at the whole of university

It’s so sad that even people who want to get a job for a lotto but if start up cash. Need a label to say they’ve gone to (university) - even tho they are more qualified through knowledge and skills vs a badge that u have student debt/a degree in something. It’s all BS!

Take the kids out of school and teach them life skills and respect. The government want us dumbed down to be controlled easily. I know many families that have taken their kids out of school and are homeschooling them whilst sailing around the world meeting many different people learning from different cultures and experiencing amazing things and learning life skills making them more worldly wise adults with mutual respect for others cultures and wildlife.

Yes, it is somewhat of a joke, but without it some companies aren't willing to interview you even with relevant experience, it's their policy to hire only uni grads. It's a foot in the door and that's all cause It's wholely a waste of time imo.

The system is literally evil. I can see it from my “mental health” patients who go on random courses, paid for by “student loan” only to become stressed and suicidal before quitting, being left with debt and not knowing what to do with their life. And, if they haven’t learnt, they will do it all over again

Hmm one thing to keep in mind is that at a certain level economics is a political /social science that looks at government policy and aggregate impacts on a country. Financial Economics is the sub set focus that looks at investment/risk management across both mico and macro economics.

University is mainly all about theory, books, research and looking at the past. If you can do an apprenticeship or work placement, I'd recommend doing that instead if you're looking to get your foot in the door in the world of work more sooner. There are of course exceptions to that rule, for example you can't be a lawyer or doctor if you failed secondary school and are just applying willingly nilly to be one if you haven't got the foundations and certifications.

I believe a vast majority of University courses are now absolutely useless. You pay so much money and you waste so much time studying so little to get a useless paper but what you get is a lot of indoctrination. Instead I would suggest every young person to know what their passion is, to learn how money and wealth creation works. And to study some online courses while working from the bottom at the company (or making your own company). So much more valuable, you are gaining knowledge, saving money of tuition fees and actually being paid some money (even if it's little at the start). You would be so much more ahead of your peers. I studied my masters at Imperial College London in Software Engineering, now I am Snr programmer in AI. It was a great course. But there such a few good courses like that. So unless you want to be a doctor, architect or lawyer, I wouldn't bother really.

Basic education, uni is only good for certain things like becoming doctors, dentist, etc. it’s not worth being ladened with debt, especially this day and age where it’s like coming out with a mortgage. Better invest in becoming financial freed and live a life worth living not living to work
