This is a very clear and concise introduction to Levinas. Dews is terrific at providing examples and anecdotes to illustrate his points.

Why can't the asymmetry be circumstantial? - you're having difficulty walking, I'll hold the door for you. Or you need food now, so you can have mine. It needn't be about the person.

Preceding the ontological project of coming to know the point, the Significant Other appeared, generating the fundamental encounter with the human, and imputing the absolute ethical imperative to 'change the channel, honey.' sigh It was ethically prior while it lasted.
