UNLEASH THE ARCHERS on “Northwest Passage”:
“This song means a lot to us as a band, we like to put it on during those long drives on tour and it always brings us right back home. We originally recorded it to be a bonus track for our last full length album Apex, but we loved the track so much we knew it needed special treatment. We held on to it for a bit and eventually decided to release it as its own 7" vinyl EP with another Canadian cover song as the B side. The song “Northwest Passage” is all about touring through Canada, which Stan Rogers did a lot, and how it equates to being an explorer looking for the passage all those years ago. It really hits home with us, we've toured through Canada too many times to count, so we know just how Stan was feeling. That's where the name of the EP came from too; every time we hit the road on tour it's like we too become Explorers, with the great big unknown stretching out before us.”

An old Scottish Gaelic blessing is Cuiridh mi clach air do chàrn, "I'll put a stone on your stone". In Highland folklore it is recounted that before Highland clans fought in a battle, each man would place a stone in a pile. Those who survived the battle returned and removed a stone from the pile. The stones that remained were built into a cairn to honour the dead. en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cairn

Me: I get it now! Brittney's seeing alternate versions of her life, versions of her and her bandmates that they would have been if they didn't decide to become the band they are today. She's reflecting on her life and her journey to get there, and in the end she "defeats" the version of herself that doubts her self-worth. Brittney in the Behind-The-Scenes Explanation Video: we wanted to do some rick and morty stuff. I got killed by my shadow self lol 👌

At the end her "fear" forces her to flee, mid-performance. But then the real her, the one with courage, determination, and perseverance kills that fear and embraces her new life. I think it is a great song and he has the added advantage of the personal connection. :-)

I like to imagine how Rogers would react to hearing this, were he still with us today. He would've been 70. Nathan would've pulled up a recording on his computer (which he probably wouldn't know how to use), and played it for him as he sat and listened studiously. Then... Slowly.. Carefully... Considerately... Stan would've lifted his right hand and made the devil horns for the first time in his life.

They paid respect to Stan and yet I am sure are bringing a new and younger group to learn about Stan and his music as well as their own !!! I am an old fart, listening to Stan for many years ....thank you Unleash the Archers for this ....for your own music as well .....someone commented here earlier that Stan's music is important to Canadians, that is true, I am not Canadian, I have traveled throughout the country, every province that is ..... I would add this - Stan's music is important to the WORLD ....a giant .....thanks for posting this, for this moving forward of his music and for your own wonderful, pounding yet graceful music.
