Unleashing the power of the Roland JD-Xi using Sysex Control Map on the A-PRO midi controller

I loved the sounds and potential of this hybrid synth but got a bit frustrated how hidden the controls were. I spent quite some time trying to make sense of Sysex and bought a Roland A800-Pro controller. Now I have access to the full power of an analog synth with one knob per function, almost :)
Even managed to dial in a fat Moog bass quickly thanks to Attack Decay Sustain Release on the Amp and the Low Pass Filter. In the end you get a hybrid multi timbral synth for a few hundred euros. Classic Roland drum machines, 808, etc
2 Digital Synth, each with 3 oscillators, each oscillator with their filter and LFO
A fully Analog Synth, mono, perfect for fat bass and leads.
I hope Roland doesn't blame us for unleashing this beast.
The JD-xI MIDI implementation document is necessary to know which CC and Sysex messages. But when you have doubt (it's a messy document) or if it doesn't work, you can use MIDI Monitor app on your computer with source as the JD-xI and action one of the knobs on sliders on the Roland and see the resulting parameter in the Midi Monitor. This way you know which commands to send from the A-PRO.

Hello Franche Musique, my name is Ace Bizerk and I own the A-Pro 300, JD-Xi, and MC-707. I have watched your videos and thank you for making them. I felt like since I have these same devices that it would be good to reach out and say hello. There are some areas that I could use some advice on like mapping the A-Pro for the MC-707. Embarrassing as it is I could also use some help setting up the initial parameters for using RPN/NRPN messeges. Somehow I still do not have a good understanding of how to set the null controllers and utilizing these types of MIDI messeges. I got some of the maps for the JD-XI off of the Roland Clan Forum that have Sysex messages. RPN'S are not mapped but described which ones work with the JD-Xi. However, since I don't know how to set up RPN's I have not been able to use them. This I am really wanting to figure out so I can make maps for the MC-707 which seems to have much smaller midi implementation Rx parameters. Incredibly video. Can you share which of these needed Sysex specifically? Many/most midi controllers don't do sysex or use it in limited ways (without enough bytes for the JD-Xi).

Nice! I'm working through this myself. Do you find that your ADSR faders can only send messages to one channel, i.e. help for one part, and can't work across the entire board? I wish I could have amp and filter envelope controls that affected whichever "part" was selected by the synth... or at least responded to some kind of toggle, so I could switch between the two digital synth parts and the analog one. Let me know if you have any suggestions please!

I have sold the A800 and changed the setup but yes you can do that. You can assign a different control map for each synthesizer. In this video i focused on the Part 4 Analog Synth but you can do the same for the digital synths. Your faders will then affect those only. When you want to switch you can just select a different control map on the jd-xi.

And now that I realize each of the digital parts also has three partials, I imagine I could set up a control map for each one of those separately, for both of the two digital parts, if I *really* want hands-on control over the sounds on the fly. That's kinda nuts. Thanks for the insight!

@@dconrad yes there are global controls for each digital part 1 and 2 and also control for each partial within the synth (6 in total). And deep editing for the Drum part too. You can check the free jdxi editor if you are on PC, it is deep stuff.

Very impressive! I'm using my Novation XIO Synth and can program most parts. What CC or NRPN are used to program the Patern of the Arpeggiator? I'm lost with "program zone address coding.." Thanks for the great video!

Hello and thanks for the comments. The arpeggiators and all other parameters access is described in the Midi Implementation. Did you download it? The JD-xI MIDI implementation document is necessary to know which CC and Sysex messages. hi, yo can only control jdxi with another rolland controller or u can control it with any midi controller?

Any with a midi out connection.

For many of the sysex controlled parameters you need a Midi Controller that can send 16 bit or more sysex messages. The only two I've found that can do this is the Roland A-Pro Midi controllers and the Behringer BCR2000 and BCF2000. I'm sure there are more, but I haven't found them. There are many DAWs and computer programs that can do it though. It's a shame there aren't more midi controllers that can.

@@fusionistaaaa Really appreciate the video. LOVE my JD-Xi 🙂 You can buy a broom handle for a few $ and mount a 1/4" screw thread in the end for your camera or a large binder clip with some rubber for your phone....[works for me]
