+hillbillybushcraft Yes I would love to build a smaller model system and then get funding for a bigger one at some point. Even just to use the oil for cooking, algae oil can have omega 3 oils and be very healthy (you probably have to carefully select the breed for the best oil). Might be worth $10 a gallon or more as a healthy extra virgin veg oil, and supposedly algae can produce a LOT of oil, a conservative estimate based on what I have read would be 10,000-20,000 gallons per acre per year.

JaycubL Sounds like a cool project. You do it on a scale model then you would know pretty close to how much you actually would produce. Plus a nice alternative in collapsed economy. I'll bet you could do it on a small scale. Just for fun,

+Oswald Rayleigh Yes that's an important part not it the video. You could use something like "compost tea." All you want to take away really is the oil so it would be possible to cycle the nutrients back in from compost made from the solid byproduct. Ammonium nitrate can be made from air and water, or you could use animal waste. Using sewer water to feed this could be an option. I don't think it would need much nutrients at all compared to the amount of oil that can be made.

The purpose would be to make it useful as a drop in replacement for petroleum in all ways. Some types of engines can run on triglyceride oil but it is not as good in cold weather because it thickens, and it does not work quite as well or in as many vehicles as regular diesel fuel. Most passenger cars are gasoline fueled anyway. A lot of oil from this could be used for human consumption/cooking oil, or sent to a different kind of refinery to make plastic or other fibers or rubber etc. But this video has a narrowed focus for directly replacing standard petroleum fuel without any need for change of equipment by the users.

The algae farm would absorb more carbon from the atmosphere than what is contained in the useable fuel that is produced, so as far as greenhouse gasses this would be a big positive. Yes electric is better for the long run, but scrapping all gasoline cars now and replacing would be worse, so we need a practical and friendly fuel source like this. The other emissions like hydrocarbons and NO2 should be minimal with a well-tuned engine and catalytic converter.

You should find the relevant information if you search the internet for "pyrolysis gasoline" or "catalytic pyrolysis" or things like that until you find what you need. I don't know what happened with the pdf.

+Jacob Ellinger Maybe. The oil companies will keep getting petroleum as long as they make money off of it. Maybe the USA should invest money in this instead of subsidizing petroleum (seems like an obvious choice but they probably wont).
